―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

"C:PRAE> Scanning... Intruders detected!
Calculating stats... Threat level: LOW.
Verdict: DELETE INTRUDERS.
"
―Praetorian, Epic Battle Fantasy 4 v3

The Praetorian is a recurring boss and summon in the Epic Battle Fantasy series, appearing in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5 (after the latter's v2 update).

Appearance

The Praetorian is a knight-like robot made primarily of black and grey metal. It has a grated visor on its head and a similar, larger plate on its chest. It moves through the use of thrusters on its back and lower body, the latter of which replace its legs. Its upper arms consist of a series of free-floating red orbs, with an additional orb embedded in its forearms. It is armed with a long red katana, a rounded black shield with a red gem in the center, and a pair of machine guns on its stomach.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Praetorian is a top-secret military prototype developed within the Waste Disposal Plant. Its design incorporates advanced technology, powerful weaponry, and even the ability to hijack other machines, including Lance's Ion Cannon satellite.

Unfortunately, the Praetorian's construction cost most of the plant's budget, leading to the rest of the facility becoming dangerously unsafe and sub-par (as well as making its programming unstable). When The Glitch seized control of the plant, the Praetorian was one of the many machines brought under its control. The heroes defeated it to claim The Hammer it had been guarding; afterwards, Lance "reprogrammed" the robot to work for the group by pressing the reset button on its back.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Following the v2 update, the Praetorian appears in the Data Bunker as the boss of the second EBF4 simulation. It also serves as the final opponent of the 3-player Boss Rush accessed from the bunker's lowest floor.

Overview

The Praetorian can slash players with its katana for strong non-elemental damage; its dashing strike is notable for having a small chance of Instant Death. It also has access to powerful Thunder, Bomb, and Fire attacks. The Praetorian can buff itself in two different ways, and it constantly summons various mechanical enemies to fight alongside it.

In EBF5, the Praetorian has a few more attacks (namely Antimatter and M.O.A.B.) and stat debuffs at its disposal (notably, all of its sword attacks can debuff HP). While it lost its Burn resistance, its weaknesses to Thunder and Water were lessened and it gained a Dispel resistance and a Virus immunity. Instead of mechanical foes, it exclusively summons Crystals as backup.

The Praetorian resists Fire and Ice while being immune to Earth and Bio, but is severely weak to Thunder, Water, Wind, and Bomb. It is also immune to Burn, Stun, Poison, Freeze, Syphon, and Instant Death while having a 50% resistance to all stat debuffs.

Defeating the Praetorian on Epic difficulty in EBF4 will reward the player with the Electrical Engineer Medal. Defeating it (and the rest of its simulation by extension) on Epic difficulty in EBF5 goes towards earning the EBF4 No More Medal.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • Every 4th turn, or every 3rd* turn when <39% HP → Passively summons two random helpers, picking from Drill Bot, Steel Fish, Laser Turret, Fridge Turret and Dish Turret.
    • The "cooldown" changes immediately when the requirement is met.
  • Charged → Ion Cannon;
  • 7th turn (or 6th* turn when below 49% health) since last Ion Cannon usage → Passively gains Charge after executing the chosen attack;
    • The "cooldown" needs to be reset for the change to take effect.
  • ≥65% HP → Slash (1/5), Dash (1/5), Bullet Hell (1/5), Plasma Field (1/5), Offensive Buff (1/5);
  • <65% HP → Triple Slash (1/7), Dash (1/7), Machine Guns (1/7), Bullet Hell (1/7), Plasma Field (1/7), Offensive Buff (1/7), AT Field (1/7).

Additionally,

  • Attempts to use Offensive Buff when Attack buff is ≥40% → Dash;
  • Attempts to use Offensive Buff when Attack buff is <40% but Magic Attack buff is ≥40% → Bullet Hell (1/2), Plasma Field (1/2);
  • Attempts to use AT Field when both Defence and Magic Defence buffs are ≥40% → Machine Guns.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Start of turn:

  • Summon score ≥ 5 or <39% HP and summon score ≥3;

* Summon Score increases by 1 if there's less than 2 other foes left, changed to less than 3 other foes if Foe Remix is enabled (checked at the start of the Praetorian's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.

Action

  • If Charged → Ion Cannon;
  • <39% HP → Triple Slash (1/6), Machine Guns (1/6);
    • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Magic Attack buff → Dash (1/6), Magic* (3/6);
    • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Attack buff → Dash (2/6), Magic* (2/6);
    • Otherwise → Dash (1/6), Offensive Buff (1/6), Magic* (2/6);
  • <69% HP → Triple Slash (1/7);
    • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% buff to both Defence and Magic Defence → Machine Guns (2/7);
      • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Magic Attack buff → Dash (1/7), Magic* (3/7);
      • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Attack buff → Dash (2/7), Magic* (2/7);
      • Otherwise → Dash (1/7), Offensive Buff (1/7), Magic* (2/7);
    • Otherwise → Machine Guns (1/7), AT Field (1/7);
      • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Magic Attack buff → Dash (1/7), Magic* (3/7);
      • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Attack buff → Dash (2/7), Magic* (2/7);
      • Otherwise → Dash (1/7), Offensive Buff (1/7), Magic* (2/7);
  • Otherwise → Slash (1/5);
    • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Magic Attack buff → Dash (1/5), Magic* (3/5);
    • If the Praetorian has at least a 40% Attack buff → Dash (2/5), Magic* (2/5);
    • Otherwise → Dash (1/5), Offensive Buff (1/5), Magic* (2/5).

* "Magic" has a 50% chance to choose best elemental spell based on active party's elemental resistance between M.O.A.B, Antimatter, Plasma Field and Bullet Hell, and otherwise randomly picks one of the four to use.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • If HP% is lower than Blood Counter → 100%;
    • <19% HP → Dash;
    • <39% HP → Triple Slash;
    • Otherwise → Slash.

* Blood Counter starts at 85 and gets reduced by 15 every time the Praetorian counters.

Additionally, the Praetorian passively gains 3x Charge at the end of every 7th turn, changed to every 6th turn when <49% HP.

Like all the Classic foes, the Praetorian ignores the Lovable status on players.

Strategy

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Equipment

Increasing resistance to Bomb, Fire, and Thunder can make the Praetorian a bit less dangerous, but most of the damage you'll take will likely be non-elemental (from the Praetorian itself and its summoned minions), so keep your defences buffed. Prioritize Thunder and Stun resistance, as it'll protect you from the boss' Plasma Field and Ion Cannon attacks, as well as any Dish Turrets that it may summon.

Battle

The Praetorian's Dash attack is only problematic if the Instant Death kicks in - it usually won't kill everyone, but it can force wasted turns of reviving and re-buffing your slain characters. Equipping Death-proof gear is inadvisable (unless you're going to do a lot of mid-battle gear switching), but using Revive or Genesis to give everyone Auto-Revive can be useful.

The Praetorian makes heavy use of buffs, Dispelling which is important, preferably via Lance's Crush or the Dispel skill. You can use Anna's Soul Arrow to take the buffs for yourself, but it's generally easier to just dispel them and use your own skills to buff the entire party.

The Praetorian spawns in with two Laser Turrets and will call for reinforcements many times throughout the battle. It can summon Steel Fish, Drill Bots, and all three kinds of Turret (Laser, Dish, and Fridge). Most enemies can be safely ignored and left to be picked off with area attacks, but Dish Turrets should be taken down immediately, as their disruptive attacks can leave the party easy prey for the Praetorian.

When the boss gains the Charged status, it's preparing to use its mighty Ion Cannon attack. Focus on bolstering your Magic Defence and healing your HP - if your defences are strong enough as is, have everyone Guard or equip gear that maximizes their Thunder and Stun resistance.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Equipment

The player will obviously want Bomb, Fire, and Thunder resistance, but Death immunity is also important due to the Praetorian's Dash attack. Stun resistance is quite good as well. But for the most part, the player will want high Defence against the robot's slashes.

Strategies regarding Invisible, Target, and Lovable are quite useless, as the Praetorian ignores all of these effects.

Battle

Even with the proper precautions, the Praetorian's slashes still debuff HP, slowly lowering the party's endurance. Bullet Hell, Plasma Field, and Antimatter Flux also debuff stats. It has two different buffing abilities, one offensive and one defensive. It is vital to Dispel these buffs as the Praetorian can easily run over the party or become extremely durable for a time; Dispelling the buffs also gives it a decent chance to spend its next turn renewing one or the other. Alternatively, the player can slightly influence the Praetorian's attacks by debuffing one offensive stat more than the other; if its Attack is higher, it will be less likely to use its litany of spells, but if its Magic Attack is higher, it is less likely to use its Dash attack.

The Praetorian can also use the Ion Cannon Limit Break, which is indicated by it passively gaining Charge status. When this happens, the player should heal as much HP as possible and buff their Magic Defence; the Angel Mirror summon is also useful, as Ion Cannon is magic-based. Equipping Stun-resistant equipment is also advisable if the player has not done so already.

The Praetorian constantly summons Crystals as backup, increasing its summon rate as its HP decreases. These enemies are secondary threats compared to the Praetorian itself.

Strategy 1: Wind and Debuffs

This strategy relies on the Praetorian's serious Wind weakness and its tendency to use its buffing skills if its existing buffs fall too low. Although it still has a fair chance to use one of its many attacks, a combination of Weaken, Curse, and reliable Dispel effects can make it waste more than a few turns trying to maintain its stat boosts.

CharIcon NoLegs.png NoLegs
EBF5 WepIcon Honjo Masamune.png EBF5 Hat Headband.png EBF5 Hat Necromancer's Helmet.png link={{{Arm1}}}

NoLegs will be the primary attacker, using a combination of his natural and shared Wind skills to inflict massive damage to one of the Praetorian's biggest weaknesses. The Honjo Masamune and the Ninja Gear further amplify Wind damage while providing NoLegs with massive offensive power and good Evade to offset his fragility. The Headband provides auto-Brave and useful Bomb and Fire resistances, but Attack-boosting hats like the Dragon Helm, the Officer's Hat, or the Necromancer's Helmet are also viable options. Useful Flairs for this build include the Fairy for Auto-Revive, the Cat Tail for extra Evade, the Pixel Glasses for a little extra safety net (make sure to heal NoLegs before his next turn if they trigger), or the Dog Tags for a little extra Bomb resistance and automatic offensive buffs if NoLegs needs to be revived.

In terms of skills, NoLegs has a variety of useful Wind attacks to choose from. Tempest is his strongest consistent option, but Tornado Tantrum can apply Weaken to debuff the Praetorian's offenses. Power Metal has an annoying cooldown time, but the healing effect is useful in a pinch and it can deal decent damage with the Magic Attack boost from the Honjo Masamune on top of a double Wind boost; if NoLegs gets a Limit Break, Death Metal can be used similarly if The Destroyer's Dispel isn't urgently needed. Shockwave is comparatively underwhelming unless NoLegs has Haste support to let himself take advantage of the Stagger it may inflict. If NoLegs can spare a turn for support instead of offense, Barrier covers the gap in Matt's buff coverage, Phyrnna's Blessing gives Regen (and a decently useful Magic Attack buff), and Sushi Cat! and Star Blast can provide emergency healing and Dispel, respectively.

CharIcon Matt.png Matt
EBF5 WepIcon Devil's Fork.png EBF5 WepIcon Love Blade.png EBF5 Hat Cardboard Box.png EBF5 Arm Hipster Shirt.png EBF5 Arm Flame Suit.png

Matt's physical buff build is a useful support for NoLegs's assault, with Temper amplifying the cat's already-monstrous physical power while Protect and especially Reflex help cover the party's defenses. The Cardboard Box is an obvious choice for its buff boost, but the sword and armor can vary. It's recommended to use either the Love Blade or the Hipster Shirt for their Instant Death immunity, with Fire resistance and an third buff boost provided by the Flame Suit or the Devil's Fork respectively. The Nano Machines are advisable to help shorten the cooldowns on Matt's buffing skills, and the Green Cross can provide a helpful Regen.

In between buffs, Matt can use other shared skills to continue supporting the party. Sharpen can prolong status effects on his allies or enemies, Encore can give Anna or NoLegs another turn to do their work, and Firecrackers provides the usual luck shenanigans (especially useful when attempting to capture the Praetorian or to support Anna's status infliction). Heal More is another option to make use of spare turns, since Anna and NoLegs may have trouble finding time to use it. If there is literally nothing else to do on his turn, Matt can even throw an attack at the Praetorian; this works better with the Devil's Fork, whose weapon-elemental skills can inflict Dry for Anna's Nitro Blitz. Matt is also the primary choice to use summons if the party needs them, particularly Angel Mirror when the Praetorian charges up its Ion Cannon.

CharIcon Anna.png Anna
EBF5 WepIcon Alchemist's Bow.png EBF5 Hat Blue Elephant.png EBF5 Arm Red Dress.png

Anna has arguably the most important role of all in this strategy: using her amazing capacity for status infliction to stay on top of the Praetorian's buffs and backup. With a triple status boost from the Alchemist's Bow, the Red Dress, and the Blue Elephant, she can reliably slaughter Crystals with Shredder and dispel the Praetorian's buffs with Nitro Blitz - the latter also hits its serious Bomb weakness. The Flame Badge and Lightning Badge improve Anna's resistances to some of the Praetorian's spells, and the Crossbone Pin allows her weapon-elemental skills to inflict Curse on the Praetorian, complementing NoLegs's Weaken infliction to simultaneously reduce the boss's offenses and defenses. If the need arises, Anna can also apply Weaken and Tired via Blessed Barrage and Gaia Blossom, respectively; however, the Praetorian's Earth immunity means that the latter won't do any actual damage to it.

In between her status spam, Anna can also use Refresh as an additional source of healing or Revive to give herself and her allies extra safety nets against the Praetorian's attacks. She should prioritize NoLegs if the Fairy hasn't given him Auto-Revive already; afterwards, she can apply the status to herself or Matt, depending on who seems to need it more. If she has a chance to cast Hurricane, she can amplify NoLegs's Wind damage even further by making the Praetorian Light. She's also effective against the preceding wave; she can instantly kill one Crystal with The Reaper and stun-lock the other with Spark Shower on subsequent turns, giving the player more time to prepare themselves for the main event.

Summon

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

"Seems to be working as good as new! (Good thing I erased its memory!)"
―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

When the Praetorian is defeated, Lance reprograms it to act as a summon for the party. At the time of its acquisition, it is the strongest and most expensive summon available, although the Protector and Cosmic Monolith eventually eclipse it in power and cost.

When summoned, it uses its Triple Slash and then Dash attack on all enemies; this also gives Brave and an Attack buff to all allies.

If the Praetorian MKII has been defeated, there's a 20% chance for Praetorian MKII to be summoned instead when using the summon, which increases damage done. Prior to the v2 update, a bug caused this feature to not work.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Praetorian can be captured and used as a summon. It gives Defend to all allies, then slashes all enemies thrice before dashing through them. Each attack deals solid non-elemental physical damage, and the final dash has a small chance to inflict Instant Death.

While extremely expensive, the Praetorian summon can be a decent "panic button" in a tight spot, halving incoming damage for the next turn while also inflicting a good amount of multi-target damage that can't be resisted. The Death chance is negligible unless used on foes actively weak to it, but it can pick off non-resistant foes to give the party a little more breathing room.

Gives the defend status to all currently active allies. It then attacks all enemies with non-elemental damage, which may instantly kill them, and ignores their defensive buffs. (but not debuffs) 141 Cured

Trivia

  • A "praetorian" was a bodyguard of the emperor in the Roman Empire.
  • If Lance is one of the active party members when the Praetorian uses its buff in EBF4, he says: "An AT-field?! That's impossible!" This is a reference to Neon Genesis Evangelion, a science-fiction anime.
  • According to Lance, the Praetorian is equipped with titanium armor plating, uranium shells, and nanotube-enforced blades. He also speculates that the Praetorian is equipped with a fusion reactor (much like the Protector and the Valkyrie Tank).
  • The Praetorian is apparently incapable of operating outside of a cold environment, as suggested by certain dialogues throughout Waste Disposal Plant.
    • Despite this, the Praetorian functions normally as a Summon regardless of where a battle is being fought.
  • Given its ability to hack into other machines, the Praetorian may have aided the Glitch in controlling the other robots in the Waste Disposal Plant.
  • As with previous mecha bosses in the EBF series (Mecha and Guardian), the Praetorian's design is taken from one of the many potential mecha designs in the Mecha Dress Up Game. Unlike its predecessors, Matt Roszak redrew the Praetorian's parts to fit the graphical style of EBF4.
  • A robot very similar to the Praetorian appears as one of Matt's opponents in Brawl Royale. The main differences between the two include a red plume on the Brawl Royale robot's head (the spike for the plume is still visible on the Praetorian's head), a pair of tails on its back, a second pair of machine guns instead of its chest grate, and different weapons (a halberd and a rectangular shield compared to the Praetorian's katana and rounded shield).
  • The EBF4 Battle Mountain update introduced a new version of the Praetorian as an optional boss: the Praetorian MKII.
    • Defeating Praetorian MKII gives the existing Praetorian summon a chance to show up as Praetorian MKII instead of normal Praetorian, dealing more damage than usual.
  • In EBF5, Lance will occasionally refer to the Praetorian as female (much like the Neon Valkyrie) in his battle dialogue. He also claims that there's an entire line of Praetorian-class assault mechs and expresses a strong desire to own one.
