The Angel Mirror is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is mainly found in the Mystic Woods and the Forgotten Ruins.

Appearance

The Angel Mirror is, as the name implies, a mirror. Unlike the rest of its family, it has an oval frame made of gold and decorated with fourteen small white projections resembling feathered wings. If unbroken, a pair of small yellow eyes can be seen in the center of its glass. The Mirror is also flanked by a pair of small golden dishes, each carrying a lit candle.

Overview

Like the other Mirrors, this foe can "reflect" attacks; this simply means counterattacking to them, not nullifying/reducing their damage, though the counter has same elemental properties as the attack it's hit with. The counter's damage is based on how much HP the Mirror lost, multiplied by a set amount depending on the difficulty level. If dealt enough damage or provoked into using its Glass Shard Volley, a Mirror can be broken, causing it to lose its Reflection ability and most of its attacks; keep in mind that a player will suffer Bad Luck if they're the one to break it.

Like the Wise Mirror, the Angel Mirror can reflect any type of attack, physical or magical. It has a wide range of elemental spells; a Fire-based bash that can rarely inflict Burn, a sweeping light beam that deals Holy damage and potentially debuffs Accuracy, and a multi-target Wind attack that can occasionally Dry the party. It can also cast Spectrum for single-target magic damage of a random element, or attempt to Confuse a player for three turns. Like all Mirrors, it may break itself to bombard the party with glass shards, hitting them for decent non-elemental magic damage at the cost of losing access to almost all of its abilities.

On higher difficulty levels, the Angel Mirror gets a better status chance on its Bash and Wind Blast, as well as a stronger Accuracy debuff for its Light Beam. Additionally, it gains the ability to cast Enchantment, stacking a decent amount of Enchanted on a player; this actually hinders the Angel Mirror, since all of its attacks are magic-based, but be wary of any physically-inclined foes it may be accompanying.

The Angel Mirror's Defence is lower than its Magic Defence, so physical attacks will do more damage against it. As with all Mirrors, the best means of dealing with it are either wearing it down with weak attacks or trying to break it with a single powerful strike to minimize the threat of its Reflection ability; applying Berserk is also an option to immediately provoke its self-shattering Glass Shard Volley. If you need to focus on other foes first, Syphon renders it largely impotent, particularly if the party has high Fire resistance to minimize the damage of its Bash attack; remember that this does not stop it from reflecting damage, however!

The Angel Mirror absorbs Holy and resists Earth, but it's severely weak to Ice and Dark. It's also very vulnerable to Bad Luck, Curse, Light, and Heavy, although the latter status isn't particularly helpful against it. "More Foe Resistance" allows it to absorb Wind while removing its Ice weakness and making it immune to Bio, Stun, Doom, and Instant Death.

The mirror breaks when hurt for >50% HP in one hit and left with <24% HP, or by any attack that leaves it with <14% HP or kills it. This gives the attacker 2x (3x on Hard/Epic) EBF5 Status Bad Luck.png Bad Luck (ignoring resistances, EBF5 Status Bless.png Bless, and Evade), unless broken by a weather attack or foe's own Glass Shard Volley skill.

Element and type are the same as the attack's, with 100% element degree (even if the attack itself was only partially elemental). Will not trigger if the attack breaks the mirror. Damage is doubled if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the mirror is broken → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Nothing;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Light Beam (1/2) , Wind Blast (1/2);
  • If Syphoned or Broken → Bash;
  • If Berserked → Glass Shard Volley;
  • <39% HP → Glass Shard Volley (4/8), Light Beam/Bash/Wind Blast (3/8);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic and the target does not have Enchant → Enchantment (2/48), Confuse (1/48), Spectrum (3/48);
    • Otherwise → Confuse (1/16), Spectrum (1/16);
  • Otherwise → Light Beam (1/4), Wind Blast (1/4), Bash (1/4);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic and the target does not have Enchant → Enchantment (2/24), Confuse (1/24), Spectrum (3/24);
    • Otherwise → Confuse (1/8), Spectrum (1/8).

Summon

The Angel Mirror can be captured and used as a summon. It gives the party three stacks of Enchanted, protecting them from magic attacks while making them more vulnerable to physical damage. While this may be wasted against the average foe, it's a great asset against foes who have a Charge-telegraphed magic attack (such as Cosmic Monoliths and God).
