Mecha Dress Up Game

The Mecha Dress Up Game is the first game ever created by Matt Roszak, released back in 2008. It is a relatively simple game parodying the "Dress Up" category (where one typically dresses up a doll or model with clothes and accessories), where the player can create and customize large robots (mecha) using an extensive array of weapons and machinery.

Some parts and weapons used in the Mecha Dress Up Game are references to various games and anime series that feature robots/mecha, such as the Gundam series and Canti from FLCL (who also later appeared in Brawl Royale and Epic Battle Fantasy).

On the 24th of September 2021, nearly a day since a mobile port of Brawl Royale was announced, Matt Roszak announced on Discord that an updated mobile port of Mecha Dress Up Game (the same port that will be found in the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection) is coming. It was released on September 28th.

Gameplay

As mentioned above, the Mecha Dress Up Game is a twist on the "Dress Up" genre of browser games; the player can cycle through dozens of parts to make their own customized mecha. Hovering over a part "highlights" it, allowing the player to cycle through their options by clicking on them; alternatively, they can right-click on a part to cycle backwards.

The customizable parts include:

  • Torso: The mecha's upper body, one of the two default parts available and the part where most other pieces attach to.
  • Legs: The mecha's lower body and the other default part. Includes hover engines, legs both humanoid and non-humanoid, treads, and even a single large wheel. Some legs can have guns mounted beneath them.
  • Head: The mecha's head, situated on top of the Torso. Once a head is chosen, it can be further equipped with a variety of hats and other headgear.
  • Arms: The mecha's left and right arms. Humanoid limbs can be equipped with weapons in their hands and shields on their forearms; alternatively, the arm can be replaced by a variety of cannons, blades, and other contraptions.
  • Shoulder: A weapon or device mounted on the mecha's right shoulder.
  • Back: A variety of engines, wings, and weapons that attach to the mecha's back. Some can have further parts attached to them.
  • Tail: Various tails, weapons, and wires attached to the back of the mecha's lower body.

In the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection version, players can also adjust the mecha's color palette, with five options that affect different parts:

  • Paint 1: Affects the black parts of the mecha's body.
  • Paint 2: Affects the grey parts of the mecha's body.
  • Metal: Affects the mecha's blades, gun barrels, and other generally grey-colored accessories.
  • Glass: Affects glass/crystal parts adorning certain components.
  • Lights: Affects parts visibly made of energy or light.

Medals

How to obtain all medals in the Newgrounds version.

The Newgrounds release of the Mecha Dress Up Game featured the following eight medals:

  • Mecha 1: Build the Unnamed Mecha (see section below).
  • Mecha 2: Build the Mecha (see section below).
  • Mecha 3: Build the Guardian (see section below).
  • Legendary: Build a mecha with Celebi for a hat. Just flip through the hats until you find it.
  • Phallic Gun: Build a mecha with a minigun in a certain spot. This can be accomplished by switching the mecha's bottom to the second pair of bipedal legs available, and clicking the space in between the legs until the minigun appears.
  • Put Ya Guns On: First, build a mecha with the last possible back accessory option, which looks like a rocket launcher array with 24 or so rocket slots. Then, click the space above the rocket launcher twice to add two more rows of guns to it.
  • Recycle: Build a mecha with a cardboard box for a body. Then, click the decal on the front repeatedly until it switches to a recycle symbol.
  • To Smithereens: Hit the "NUKE" button.

When the Mecha Dress Up Game was released as a part of the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection, it had ten associated medals. Most return from the Newgrounds version, but one has been altered for copyright purposes and two new ones have been added.

Music

The music that plays in the background of the original Mecha Dress Up Game is "Kiss of Judas" by Stratovarius. In the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection, that particular song was replaced by four all-new soundtracks by Forger343, all remixes of earlier tracks composed by Phyrnna.

  • An Unending Adventure
  • Reverse Arcana
  • Twilet Port
  • Under Du5k

Influence on the Epic Battle Fantasy series

The King Slime cannon, Cat Soldier head, and Nuke in the Mecha Dress Up Game (EBFC version).
  • Many of the robot bosses in Matt Roszak's later games are based on possible designs from the Mecha Dress Up Game, including:
    • Unnamed Mecha (seventh foe in Brawl Royale)
    • Mecha (EBF1, some of its parts appear different)
    • Guardian (EBF2)
    • Praetorian (EBF4, with a slightly different head and all of its parts being redrawn in better quality)
    • Praetorian MKII (EBF4 following the Battle Mountain update; reuses some Praetorian parts while having others replaced by entirely original components)
  • Several mechanical enemies in the series incorporate parts featured in the Mecha Dress Up Game, such as the Defender, the Valkyrie Tank, and the Turrets.
  • Some weapons and miscellaneous items owe their first appearances to the Mecha Dress Up Game, including many of Matt's Swords, the gunblade used by Lance in Epic Battle Fantasy 2, 3 and 4, the speakers summoned by Power Metal and skill, and the red katana that appears as the Praetorian's weapon and as a part of the Ninja Skirt.
  • For the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection release, Matt Roszak added new parts to the Mecha Dress Up Game, including some from the Epic Battle Fantasy series. These include the shark used by the Igloo Fort, the cannon used by the King Slime, the heads of a Cat Soldier and a Skull Ghost, the pigs seen in EBF3, and the Nuclear Bomb's EBF2 design, among others.
