Xolotl is an optional boss and summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. He can be found in the Greenwood Library, being the third wave of the Sketch Boss Rush.

Appearance

Xolotl is a living pencil sketch created by paper in the Greenwood Library. He appears as a tribal shaman of a somewhat humanoid species with a stout, wide body with short arms and legs. His face takes up much of the front of his body, with the upper half being obscured by a worn skull mask with two pointy horns and a thick leather strap to secure it to his head. A pair of rings are attached to leather straps at the base of the horns. Xolotl's eyes and nostrils are visible through the holes in the skull, and his wide mouth with irregular squarish teeth can be seen beneath it. A large mass of what could be leaves or feathers is visible on top of his head, but it's unclear if they're part of the mask or actually growing from his head.

In addition to his mask, Xolotl wears armbands and a loincloth made from rope and leaves/feathers. He carries a staff in his right hand consisting of a skull attached to the top of a long, femur-like bone; another rope and two leaves/feathers are tied around the upper half of the staff.

Like all of the Sketch bosses, Xolotl is a completely static image in battle, with his "animations" consisting of him flashing briefly or being moved around the screen by an invisible force.

Overview

Xolotl has above-average offenses, Magic Defence and Accuracy, but below-average Defence and Evade. At certain thresholds he can buff his Attack and Defence, or his Magic Attack and Magic Defence, with the former giving Bless and the latter giving Regen on Hard/Epic difficulty, as well as a free attack that deals a lot of damage to one target. He will use each a total of 3 times, after losing 1/4. 1/2, and 3/4 of his total health, with the stat buffs becoming stronger at the halfway and three quarter marks.

Xolotl's attacks are all physical Non-elemental and magical Dark attacks that carry annoying statuses. He can counterattack with his staff for a good amount of damage and Poisons them for 3 turns, increased to 5 on Hard/Epic, launch bones at everyone to hit them multiple times with the final hit applying a 5-turn Doom, which will be guaranteed on Hard/Epic (this attack also has slightly lower accuracy than normal), ram into the party, which may Weaken them (increased chance on Hard/Epic), or summon skulls that chomp down on the party to deal magic partially Dark-elemental damage and Shrouds them for a turn (2 turns on Hard/Epic).

Xolotl is very weak to Holy, less weak to Fire, and even less weak to Bio. On the other hand, he resists Water and absorbs Dark. He has the standard boss immunity to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Syphon, Doom and Instant Death, is also immune to Invisible and Enchanted, and has a decent resistance to all stat debuffs, aside from Evade. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" removes his Bio weakness, gives him resistance to Curse, Bad Luck, Tired, Weaken and Dispel, and slightly increases his non-HP and non-Evade debuff resistances.

Xolotl gains up to 24% extra Attack, Magic Attack, HP and Accuracy depending on how many optional bosses have been killed, medals awarded and monster cards obtained:

After level 26, Xolotl gains a 5% boost to Attack and Magic Attack, and a 2.5% boost to HP and Accuracy on every level-up (these boosts stack additively, acting as a multiplier). This boost caps out at level 36.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Start of Turn (only if Foe Remix is enabled)

* Summon score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of Xolotl's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.

Pencil

  • ≤79% HP and hasn't used Pencil Stab yet → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤49% HP and only used Pencil Stab once → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤19% HP and only used Pencil Stab twice → Pencil Stab.

* Since each cast of Pencil Stab doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Buff

  • ≤74% HP and hasn't Buffed yet → Buff 1 (1/2), Buff 2 (1/2);
  • ≤49% HP and has Buffed only once → Buff 1 (1/2), Buff 2 (1/2);
  • ≤24% HP and has Buffed only twice → Buff 1 (1/2), Buff 2 (1/2);

* Since each cast of Buff 1/Buff 2 doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Action

  • If Berserked, or catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Sketch Bones (1/2), Sketch Skull (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Ram (1/3), Sketch Bones (1/3), Sketch Skull (1/3).

Counter

  • If Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled → 100% → Staff Strike (2/4), Sketch Bones x2 (1/4), Sketch Skull x2 (1/4);
  • Otherwise → 100% → Staff Strike.

*Unlike most other counters, the first cast of Sketch Bones x2 and Sketch Skull x2 targets randomly, instead of always targeting the last attacker.

Strategy

Equipment

Dark resistance can be helpful to lower the damage inflicted by Xolotl's Dark attacks, but it also hits hard with non-elemental physical attacks, making high Defence helpful as well. Having resistance to Weaken and Poison is also recommended. Alternatively, sources of Bless will be great at nullifying Xolotl's status effects all together, including Shroud which normally cannot be resisted.

Battle

Xolotl appears as the third boss of the Sketch Boss rush, so the player would have already fought both GunKat-800XL and Papalotl. Focus on healing everybody if they are not in good shape before beginning the battle. Xolotl's Sketch Skulls inflict Shroud on the players, effectively masking the other status effects Xolotl inflicts and adding an amount of inconvenience. Shroud can be cured only by Reflex and is only avoidable with Bless. Fortunately, Shroud does not actually affect the gameplay itself. Thus, if the player has a strong memory, they can still continue the fight as normal even with Shroud in effect.

Offensively, the player will want to focus on Fire, Bio and Holy. Xolotl is vulnerable to Burn, Scorch, Poison and Virus, so it can be worn down over time. Weaken, Tired and Curse are also helpful at lowering Xolotl's stats with the latter in particular increasing its already severe Holy weakness. Keep in mind that Xolotl will always counter attack players with a poisoning Staff Strike, so make sure nobody is attacking with low HP.

As Xolotl's HP drops past certain thresholds, it will buff itself and attack with pencil stabs for a total of three times throughout the battle. Its buffs only get stronger as its HP falls. Obviously, the player should Dispel these buffs, but that may not possible on Hard and Epic difficulties where Xolotl's buffs can give it Bless. This is where the Red Flybot summon can come in handy to invert them with Recycle, which cannot be blocked by Bless. The summon will only get more effective as Xolotl's buffs become stronger.

Summon

Xolotl can be captured to be used as a summon. When used, Xolotl hits all foes with its Sketch Bones attack, Weakening them all with a high infliction chance. This also ignores defensive buffs, which is mostly unnecessary as this summon is a good option to quickly spread the Weaken status to multiple foes, as it's somewhat cheap and is very reliable at inflicting the status, and not for the damage.
