Papalotl is an optional boss and summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5, introduced in the v2 update. He can be found in the Greenwood Library, being the second wave of the Sketch Boss Rush.

Appearance

Papalotl is a living pencil sketch created by the magic paper in the back of Greenwood Library. He appears as a large tribal warrior of a vaguely humanoid species, with a stout body and short limbs. His face seems to take up most of his body, with two small eyes and a toothy mouth being visible behind the crude wooden mask he wears. The mask is secured to Papalotl with thick ropes, and is adorned with leaves and a large flower resembling a daisy; alternately, the leaves are actually growing out of Papalotl's own body. He arms himself with a long wooden spear with a few stray twigs and leaves along the shaft, similar to the arrows fired from the Fairy Bow. As with all of the Sketch Bosses, Papalotl has no animations; he flashes when he unleashes his attacks and simply jerks back when hit.

Overview

Papalotl only uses physical non-elemental attacks and barely uses status effects. He likes to throw spears, some of which can hit party members in backup. Papalotl has above-average Attack, Defence, Magic Attack, Accuracy and Evade, but below-average Magic Defence. Papalotl will buff himself and attack with pencil stabs as his HP falls. He'll also always counter any attacks made against him.

Papalotl is slightly weak to Bio, weak to Wind, and very weak to Fire. He resists Water and absorbs Earth. Papalotl has the standard boss immunities to Stun, Freeze, Chill, Syphon, and Death; he is also immune to Invisible and Enchanted. Papalotl resists all stat debuffs except for Evade.

Final damage is randomized by ±5% (except for Doom) and rounded down.

Additionally, Papalotl is immune to both Invisible and Enchanted.

Papalotl gains up to 24% extra Attack, Magic Attack, HP and Accuracy depending on how many optional bosses have been killed, medals awarded and monster cards obtained:

After level 26, Papalotl gains a 5% boost to Attack and Magic Attack, and a 2.5% boost to HP and Accuracy on every level-up (these boosts stack additively, acting as a multiplier). This boost caps out at level 36.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Start of Turn (only if Foe Remix is enabled)

* Summon score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of Papalotl's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.

Pencil

  • ≤79% HP and hasn't used Pencil Stab yet → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤49% HP and only used Pencil Stab once → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤19% HP and only used Pencil Stab twice → Pencil Stab.

* Since each cast of Pencil Stab doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Buff

  • ≤74% HP and hasn't Buffed yet → Buff;
  • ≤49% HP and has Buffed only once → Buff;
  • ≤24% HP and has Buffed only twice → Buff;

* Since each cast of Buff doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Action

  • If Berserked, or catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Sketch Spear x4 (1/2), Sketch Spears (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Ram (1/3), Sketch Spear x4 (1/3), Sketch Spears (1/3).

Counter

  • If Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled → 100% → Double Hit (1/2), Sketch Spear x2 (1/2);
  • Otherwise → 100% → Double Hit.

*Unlike most other counters, the first cast of Sketch Spear x2 targets randomly, instead of always targeting the last attacker.

Strategy

Equipment

Elemental resistance is pointless as all of Papalotl's attacks are non-elemental. Equipment with high Defence are preferable choices for this battle. Fire-elemental weapons are an obvious choice for offense. Stagger and Confuse resistance can be a good idea, particularly on higher difficulties.

Battle

The player would have already fought GunKat-800XL before this encounter, so focus on healing everybody if they are not in good shape. Use Protect or other methods to buff everyone's Defence and keep them high, as Papalotl has no way of Dispelling or somehow undoing buffs. Papalotl will spam non-elemental attacks, and since some of these hit backup, swapping out injured members may not guarantee their safety. Target Tanks are somewhat useful at redirecting the damage dealt by Papalotl's spear throws to themselves (albeit they can't prevent the damage to backup); just make sure they have enough Defence to survive the attacks.

Offensively, the player will want to use mainly Fire and Bio against Papalotl. He is vulnerable to Dry, Tired and Light, amplifying the damage dealt from all of his weaknesses. Weaken, Curse and Tired are extremely helpful at lowering Papalotl's stats and should always be used. Magic attacks are stronger against Papalotl due to his lower Magic Defence. Since Papalotl counters all attacks made against him, focus on burst damage and make sure there's no one at low HP before attacking. Papalotl is also vulnerable to Burn, Scorch, Poison and Virus, so one can also play defensively and rely on the statuses' damage over time to defeat him.

Papalotl will buff himself and attack with pencil stabs at certain HP thresholds. Papalotl's buff increases his Attack and Magic Attack while also giving him Brave (Hard and Epic difficulties only); these buffs only get stronger the lower his HP is. These buffs should be Dispelled, or else even high Defence may not be enough to protect the party.

Summon

Papalotl can be captured to be used as a summon. When used, Papalotl hits all foes with his Sketch Spears attack.

Trivia

  • According to a Discord post by Matt Roszark, Papalotl is based off of the Wooden Mask foes from MapleStory[1].
  • The name "papalotl" comes from náhuatl and it means "butterfly". In Mexico, this word evolved into "papalote", which is a common name for kites.
