Bone Bat

The Bone Bat is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It typically prefers dark areas, such as caves, the floor of the Mystic Woods and the areas surrounding The Rapture.

Appearance

The Bone Bat has the standard Bat morphology: a small flying creature with a round body, two feet, and leathery wings. Its body is a very dark brown, with lighter brown wing membranes and tiny white claws. It adorns itself with the bones of past prey, wearing a skull like a mask and bearing two long bones atop its head where other Bats would have ears. Two small red eyes can be seen within the eyeholes of the skull.

The Bone Bat has three visual variants, depending on the shape of its bone accessories:

  1. Two femurs and a skull mask with a pair of tiny teeth resembling rodent incisors.
  2. A vaguely avian skull with a tiny, beak-like point at the bottom. Two long, pointed bones protrude from its head.
  3. A pair of very short, rounded bones sticking out of its head fur. The skull mask has a rounded protrusion at the bottom, giving it a slight resemblance to a mushroom with a disproportionately large cap.

Overview

The Bone Bat can use a small variety of Wind and Dark attacks; while its moves are quite weak, some of them can inflict worrisome status effects. Its Sonar applies Target to one player, causing other foes to focus their attacks on them for a while. It can also use Bones to inflict Doom; fortunately, a 5-turn counter means that the player has plenty of time to cure it in most cases. It gains the ability to inflict Shroud and debuff Defence on higher difficulty levels, but both of these are fairly trivial.

Defensively, Bone Bats have little of note aside from good Evade; while they might dodge an attack or two, a quick shot of Shockwave, Hurricane, or Blessed Barrage should take them down easily. If more dangerous foes need to be focused on, Bone Bats can be immobilized by weapons like the Lightning Shard's Slicing Cyclone or the Neon Lightbulb's Swift Slash.

The Bone Bat is immune to Earth and absorbs Dark, while being severely weak to Wind and Holy; it also has massive vulnerabilities to Weaken, Tired, and Stun. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" gives it a decent Bio absorption and resistances to Fire, Ice, and Thunder.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Nothing;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Wing Flap;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Sonar (1/2), Dark Smoke (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Wing Flap (1/4), Sonar (1/4), Dark Smoke (1/4), Bones (1/4).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% → Sonar.

Summon

The Bone Bat can be captured and used as a summon. It gives the entire party three stacks of Virus, ignoring any status resistances they may have. This can be useful to kickstart a dedicated Virus strategy or as an attempt to get the "Epidemic" Medal.
