Glaurung

Glaurung is an optional boss and summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. He can be found in the Greenwood Library, being the fourth and final wave of the Sketch Boss Rush.

Appearance

Glaurung is a living pencil sketch of an enormous, subterranean dragon, with a long, worm-like body that burrows in and out of the ground. Several pairs of small, insect-like legs dot his underside, ending in large claws that presumably help the beast tunnel around. His head has two massive eyes with slit-like pupils, a short snout with two small nostrils, and a wide mouth with blunt, chipped-looking teeth sticking out. A number of craggy, rock-like spikes and plates are visible on his chin and down his back.

Like all of the Sketch Bosses, Glaurung is depicted as a static image whose "animations" consist of him flashing briefly or being moved around the battlefield by an unseen force.

Overview

As the last wave of the Sketch Boss Rush, Glaurung is a fearsome opponent, all the more so because the party has to go through GunKat-800XL, Papalotl, and Xolotl to even face him. Glaurung has a slightly higher than average Accuracy and lower than average Evade than most foes, but his attacks are all very powerful to make up for his average offenses.

Glaurung can ram into all party members, dealing average Non-elemental Physical damage, including those in backup, slash someone twice for high damage and inflicts Poison for 3 turns (5 on Hard/Epic), randomly slash targets three times, which may apply Poison on Hard/Epic difficulty, with the last attack hitting an additional time and Stunning the victim for a turn, or three turns on higher difficulties. He can also drop rocks with random targeting four times, each dealing partially Earth-elemental damage and may inflict 2 turns of Tired, or expel his bad breath on the party to deal magical Wind damage and Dispel.

As Glaurung's HP falls, he will automatically buff his Attack and Magic Attack by increasing amounts without actually using his turn. Like all of the Sketch Bosses, he'll also summon a giant pencil to strike the party at certain HP thresholds. Neither the buff nor the Pencil Stab takes up his normal action.

Glaurung is immune to Thunder, Earth, and Wind, resists Fire and Bio, and is very weak to Ice, fairly weak to Water, and slightly weak to Bomb. He is also immune to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Syphon, Doom and Instant Death, while also resisting Bad Luck, Curse, Weaken and Tired. He's also somewhat resistant to all non-Evade debuffs. With the "More Foe Resistance" challenge enabled, Glaurung becomes immune to Fire and Water, Dispel, and has increased resistance to all non-HP and Evade debuffs.

Additionally, Glaurung is immune to both Invisible and Enchanted.

Glaurung gains up to 24% extra Attack, Magic Attack, HP and Accuracy depending on how many optional bosses have been killed, medals awarded and monster cards obtained:

After level 26, Glaurung gains a 5% boost to Attack and Magic Attack, and a 2.5% boost to HP and Accuracy on every level-up (these boosts stack additively, acting as a multiplier). This boost caps out at level 36.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Start of Turn (only if Foe Remix is enabled)

* Summon score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of Glaurung's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.

Pencil

  • ≤79% HP and hasn't used Pencil Stab yet → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤49% HP and only used Pencil Stab once → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤19% HP and only used Pencil Stab twice → Pencil Stab.

* Since each cast of Pencil Stab doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Buff

  • ≤74% HP and hasn't Buffed yet → Buff;
  • ≤49% HP and has Buffed only once → Buff;
  • ≤24% HP and has Buffed only twice → Buff;

* Since each cast of Buff doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Dispelling Breath;
  • If Berserked → Sketch Rock x4;
  • Otherwise → Ram (1/5), Sketch Rock x4 (1/5), 2x Slash (1/5), 4x Slash (1/5), Dispelling Breath (1/5);

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% → Sketch Rock x4.

*Unlike most other counters, the first cast of Sketch Rock x4 targets randomly, instead of always targeting the last attacker.

Glaurung's counterattack was supposed to be Sketch Rock x2, but due to an oversight its usage conditions are never fulfilled and Sketch Rock x4 is used instead.

Trivia

  • Glaurung takes his name and "Father of Dragons" epithet from a dragon in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Like the Sketch Boss, Tolkien's Glaurung was a massive, dangerous monster, as well as the first dragon ever created to plague the land of Middle-earth.
