"* Snowflake wants to play!"
―Snowflake expressing his thoughts, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Snowflake is an optional boss and summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. He can be found at the end of the Secret World accessed from inside the Forgotten Temple; the Sacred Jewels are needed to activate the magic circle that leads to the Secret World.

Appearance

Snowflake is a large white limbless cat similar to NoLegs. He has very large, round eyes with minuscule dots for pupils and slight bags underneath them. He also has freckled cheeks, a zigzag-shaped mouth, and what appears to be sweat beading under his left ear; combined with his eyes, he looks perpetually uneasy. He wields a short sword with no visible hilt, and has a small tuft of fur on his forehead and chest.

Upon closer inspection, Snowflake's head and tail aren't actually connected to his body, instead "floating" just away from it. Like most bosses, his appearance changes as his HP falls:

  1. The first change occurs at around 75% HP, where Snowflake's mouth turns into a triangular frown. His pupils become significantly enlarged and the bags under his eyes drop lower.
  2. Snowflake's second change happens at around 60% HP. His mouth becomes "X" shaped and his pupils become larger. A line of black material begins to drip from each of Snowflake's eyes, which may represent tears.
  3. Snowflake's third change occurs at about 45% HP. His pupils become even larger and his eyes begin emitting even more tear streams. His mouth turns into a simple horizontal line.
  4. Snowflake's last visual change happens around 30% HP. His eyes are now black with minuscule white dots for pupils and his mouth is opened, revealing several crude-looking teeth. A disturbing amount of black material drips from his eyes and his mouth.

Snowflake has an incredibly unique death animation where he will stagger back harshly for a moment before slowly rising upright. His body then dissipates into layers of white pixels which rise and fade away from existence, leaving behind a white heart. The heart beats several times, and finally disappears.

Like the game he acts as a reference to, Snowflake has a very minimalist color scheme. He is not merely monochrome or grayscale; he is entirely black and white, and so are his spells. He also features the same "pixelated" aesthetic as the Pixels.

Personality

Snowflake does not speak; instead, his thoughts are presented to the player by an unseen narrator. Despite his perpetual confused/uneasy expression (which the narration claims "is how his face normally looks"), he seems to be rather innocent and playful, seeking to socialize with others - unfortunately for the players, his idea of "socializing" involves beating them up. He initially interprets the party's retaliation as them trying to play with him, but slowly becomes horrified as he realizes their actual intentions.

If the player spares Snowflake by capturing him instead of executing him, he will express gratitude for the party's mercy when being summoned. Strangely enough, if the player kills him instead of capturing him, Snowflake does not seem to behave any differently after respawning.

Overview

"He keeps getting stronger and stronger! We might need to use some serious debuffs here to keep his damage under control!"
―Lance freaking out as Snowflake gets serious

Snowflake wields a plethora of strong non-elemental attacks, many of which hit random targets multiple times. His outstanding damage output is further amplified by his ability to act twice per turn, and his attacks can inflict rare status effects like Disable, Hungry, and Stuffed. He is also notable for having the lowest base catch score of all foes in the game, as well as above-average Evade and Accuracy. As his HP falls, he starts using increasingly powerful versions of his skills in addition to all-new attacks; if Foe Remix is enabled, he'll also start summoning members of the Kitten Army as backup.

Despite all of this, Snowflake is vulnerable to Curse, Weaken, Tired, Poison, and Virus. As such, he becomes an incredibly easy fight once the player gains momentum, especially if they're trying to capture him instead of kill him.

Snowflake is a rare example of a non-elemental foe, being completely neutral to all elements; however, he has the standard boss immunity to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death. He also has a fair amount of resistance to all stat debuffs, especially HP. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, his debuff resistance increases slightly, and he becomes resistant to all status effects that he wasn't already immune to.

Defeating Snowflake on Epic difficulty gives the player the Determination medal. He's also useful for farming purposes, being the single best source of Plastic among foes while also being guaranteed to drop the rare Lecko Brick and Game Child materials. He also drops an Espresso when defeated, although it cannot be stolen.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action (acts twice every turn):

  • <34% HP → 6x Swing (2/6), Sword Storm (1/6), Fork Frenzy (1/6), Bone Fishes (1/6), Rice Ball Bomb x2 (1/6);
  • <49% HP → 6x Swing (2/4), Sword Storm (1/4), Fork Frenzy (1/4);
  • <64% HP → 3x Swing (2/4), Sword Storm (1/4), Fork Frenzy (1/4);
  • <79% HP → 3x Swing (2/4), Bone Fish (1/4), Rice Ball Bomb (1/4);
  • Otherwise → Sword Swing (2/4), Bone Fish (1/4), Rice Ball Bomb (1/4).

*If Snowflake's catch score is >55 and all players are Lovable, Bone Fish and Rice Ball Bomb (only the single target versions) become Sword Swing instead, while Fork Frenzy becomes Sword Storm.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 50% → Sword Swing.

Strategy

Snowflake doesn't have any special gameplay-affecting triggers, healing, or even helpers (unless Foe Remix is enabled); he simply uses ludicrously powerful non-elemental attacks, most of which hit multiple times, so there aren't many quirks to plan around. Setting up a "tank" to soak up the damage (with the Target status and very defensive equipment) will help immensely, but keep in mind that Snowflake will use some multi-target skills once his HP falls past a certain point.

The party's equipment should focus on stats and buffs, but try to get immunity against Disable, Dispel and (on Hard or Epic) Stagger; the boss also utilizes Hungry and Stuffed, which can only be blocked by Bless. Combinations like Defending with the Genji Armor and the Fairy — which gives an 80% Attack buff and Auto-Revive — can be used to save on turns.

The player should bring someone with a status build to maintain Weaken, Tired, and Curse on Snowflake; Anna can pull off all three with Blessed Barrage, Gaia Blossom, and her Weapon-elemental skills with either the Black Widow bow or the Crossbone Pin flair. The latter is usually preferable, since it allows Anna to use the Alchemist's Bow for an additional status boost. Since Snowflake already gets two turns, Haste from the Cherry Blossom weather will not affect him, meaning the Fabulous Gloop summon and the Summer Kimono's auto-skill may be useful.

Ultimately, Snowflake is very threatening if dealt with hastily, but can easily be put down with status effects. Opening with defensive buffs and following up with Attack and Magic Attack debuffs (to jumpstart Weaken) will cripple his offenses; if needed, a Target tank can absorb most of his blows. Should the player want to stall through the fight, Virus in particular deals a lot of damage passively with no upkeep.

Summon

"* Snowflake greatly appreciates that his life was spared, and will do his best for the team."
―Snowflake when summoned, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Snowflake can be captured to be used as a summon. When used, the background changes to the Secret World as Snowflake arrives and raises his sword to Dispel all foes. He then slashes the enemies six times before casting Sword Storm, hitting them for significant non-elemental physical damage. His attacks have very high Accuracy and the opening Dispel effect is guaranteed on anything with up to 80% resistance.

Due to his high SP cost and non-elemental nature, Snowflake generally isn't a very useful summon; he does have an incredibly high Dispel chance, but the players can generally get by with their many other options for the status. His main use is against the PHOENIX flock; between Dispelling their Auto-Revive and dealing a good amount of multi-target damage, he's an effective option for finishing them off.

Trivia

  • Snowflake is an elaborate homage to another indie game — Undertale, which has the same minimalist, borderline non-existent aesthetic for its battle sequences and also has opponents talk as the player fights them. Snowflake's attacks being described as "playing" with the party also hearken back to how certain Undertale monsters "attack" the player with non-hostile intentions, but end up threatening them through the nature of their actions.
    • More subtly, Snowflake's Bestiary entry claiming that "he doesn't look very strong" may be a reference to the CHECK description of Sans, which identifies him as "the weakest enemy in the game" while providing absolutely no information about the gimmicks he uses to become one of the most difficult battles in all of Undertale.
    • Snowflake is named "UnderLegs" in game's files, indicating that he's a NoLegs-like character in the graphical style of Undertale. The background used for his battle is simply named "UNDERTALE".
    • The Medal for beating Snowflake on Epic is called "Determination", a recurring theme in Undertale.
  • Snowflake was first shown on Matt Roszak's blog as a piece of Undertale fan art back in early 2016, long before any playable builds of the game. While Roszak stated that he would include Undertale references in EBF5, there were no clues that Snowflake himself could become a boss.
  • The Secret World's appearance changes depending on how the player defeats Snowflake. Killing him turns the environment black with red eyes replacing the "stars", while capturing him produces a golden environment with white hearts floating in the void around it.
    • This is presumably an allusion to Undertale's Genocide and Pacifist playthrough, respectively.
  • Snowflake makes an appearance in a special Game Over screen only visible if the player dies from using The Devourer summon (which is only available on a New Game +2).
  • Snowflake has a few similarities to the Arcade foes, being a pixelated optional boss whose summon temporarily changes the background to that of the "game" in which he was fought.
