Master Wraith

The Master Wraith is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It usually appears in the Mystic Woods and late-game areas, most notably the mausoleum of Redpine Town and The Rapture.

Appearance

The Master Wraith is a ghostly figure wearing a tattered dark brown cowl with a black lower section. All that can be seen under the cowl is a pair of glowing red eyes. It has a small skull necklace and four bone horns (with one obscured by the angle of its body), with the white strap of the former being visible behind the latter.

Overview

As its name suggests, the Master Wraith is one of the most powerful members of its family, with a diverse movepool and the AI to actually take advantage of it. It uses Bio, Ice, Fire and Dark elemental attacks, representing the Leaf Wraith, the Frost Wraith, the Flame Wraith, and Wraiths as a whole respectively. It also packs several status effects in its attacks, with more thrown in on harder difficulties.

Like most Wraiths, the Master Wraith will avoid attacking a player with an element the player resists; as such, one can alter its moveset by planning accordingly. For instance, since Matt is a physical attacker who will benefit from being hit by Berserk, giving him resistance to Ice and Bio will make him more likely to be attacked by Hellfire. Keep in mind that this may also provoke less palpable attacks; in the scenario given, the Wraith might also decide to hit Matt with a Doom-causing Dark attack.

The Master Wraith backs up its diverse offense with an equally diverse defense; it has resistances to half of the elements in the game on top of a Dark absorption. In terms of status conditions, it is immune to Death, Doom, Bad Luck, Curse, Weaken, and Tired; it has no weaknesses to any status effects and is neutral to all debuffs.

Fortunately, while the Master Wraith shares the strength of the other Wraiths, it also shares their weaknesses, most notably a weakness to Wind. It is also weak to Holy, but its tendency to appear alongside the Holy-absorbing Flame and Frost Wraith means that Wind attacks such as Shockwave and Tempest should be the player's go-to option to combat the Master Wraith. Additionally, Syphon and Berserk will lock it out of its magic and force it to use a basic physical attack with a slight Dark degree.

Enabling "More Foe Resistance" makes the Master Wraith completely immune to Thunder, Ice, Fire and Water while lessening its Holy and Wind weaknesses. It also becomes immune to Dispel and somewhat resistant to having its offenses and defenses debuffed.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Flee;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Iceshard Volley;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Double Stab;
  • Otherwise → Double Stab (1/8), Fire Bash (1/8), Bio Bash (1/8), Iceshard Volley (1/8), Leaf Blade (1/8),
    Ice Needles (1/8), Hellfire (1/8), Dark Swoop (1/8).

* The Master Wraith's attacks always prioritize targets that aren't resistant to the attack's element.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 50% and not Syphoned → Bone Star.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Ghosts, the Master Wraith will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

The Master Wraith can be captured and used as a summon. It casts a powered-up version of Bone Star on a single foe, dealing magical Dark damage with an enormous chance of inflicting Syphon for five turns. It's effectively guaranteed to Syphon any foe with less than 70% resistance, making it an effective countermeasure to powerful spellcasters like Monoliths.
