"You inhale the stump's bad breath. You are afflicted with every disease known to man, and more."
―Narration, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

GLOB is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. It is found in a secret room behind the tree with 5 levers in front of it located in the Mystic Woods.

Appearance

GLOB is a living tree stump somewhat resembling a simplified Stumpy Gloop rendered in a 8-bit style. It has a wide, jagged mouth that appears to be formed from a crack in the stump, as well as two holes in the upper half of the stump that serve as eyes. Four small roots on the bottom of the stump act as its legs, and a pair of small orange lights glow within its eye holes.

Most of GLOB's body is brown, with an orange top representing the exposed interior of the stump and dark brown details representing shadows.

GLOB's arcade room appears as a subarboreal formation, two stories underneath the overworld. The room and its passage contains green-glowing plants and fungi.

Overview

GLOB's base stats are fairly unimpressive; while its Accuracy and Evade are above-average, its offenses are mediocre and its defenses are even more so. However, it compensates with its mastery of status effects, which range from annoying to incredibly debilitating.

Like all Arcade foes, GLOB's attacks have a 25% elemental degree, making resistance fairly ineffective at reducing their damage; on the other hand, it means that the Heavy inflicted by its physical, randomly-targeting Earth attack won't make it hit much harder. It also has a physical Bio attack that hits the entire party and inflicts both Tired and a decent Evade debuff; additionally, it applies Poison to GLOB to slightly heal it over time. On higher difficulty levels, the Evade debuff becomes much stronger and Poison is replaced by Virus, allowing GLOB to heal itself and damage the party at the same time if it's not removed immediately.

However, GLOB's most dangerous attack is Bad Breath; it only hits one player for mildly Wind-based magical damage, but it also saddles them with a ridiculous array of status effects. Mechanically, Bad Breath is actually treated as six consecutive attacks, each with their own ailment; most of them will randomly choose one of two ailments with each use. To top it off, the final hit inflicts Shroud, forcing the player to memorize just what the victim was afflicted with if they can't clear the status with Reflex.

Once you work around its status spam, GLOB isn't especially difficult, due to its relatively low offensive capabilities. Although Bless may seem like a good counter to its main gimmick, even a full nine stacks will only prevent the ailments from a single Bad Breath attack. As such, the player should prioritize getting immunity to as many of the most crippling statuses (Dispel, Doom, Syphon, Confuse, and Stun) as possible on each character. Another option is to inflict Berserk on GLOB, which locks it out of Bad Breath; a physically defensive Target tank is recommended to help weather its other skills. Conversely, Syphon limits GLOB to Bad Breath spam; while potentially more dangerous due to its status effects, this could be a viable option if the whole party (or a designated Target tank) has high status resistances.

Interestingly, GLOB isn't immune to many status effects (although it strongly resists a few), so it can be given a taste of its own medicine with a dedicated status build. Curse is particularly helpful, as it will exacerbate GLOB's Holy weakness while reducing its defenses; Wet and Dry can be also used to exploit its other elemental weaknesses. On the other hand, Weaken and Tired aren't especially useful except for boosting its Capture score; GLOB is highly resistant to Attack and Accuracy debuffs, and Tired also increases the healing it receives from Poison or Virus.

GLOB is vulnerable to Fire, Ice, and Holy, but it is immune to Dark and absorbs Earth and especially Bio. It is also immune to Doom and Instant Death, incredibly resistant to Stun, Chill, Freeze, and fairly resistant to Weaken, Tired, Curse, and Bad Luck. It also resists all stat debuffs, particularly HP, Attack, and Accuracy.

With "More Foe Resistance" active, GLOB absorbs Dark, resists Water, becomes neutral to Fire and immune to Stun, Chill, and Freeze. Its resistance to Defence and Magic Attack debuffs also increases.

GLOB gains up to 24% extra Attack, Magic Attack, HP and Accuracy depending on how many optional bosses have been killed, medals awarded and monster cards obtained:

After Level 23, GLOB gains a 5% boost to Attack and Magic Attack, and a 2.5% boost to HP and Accuracy on every level-up (these boosts stack additively, acting as a multiplier). This boost caps out at level 36.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Nothing*;
  • If Syphoned → Bad Breath;
  • If Berserked → Bushy Vines (1/2), Glob Roots (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Bushy Vines (1/3), Glob Roots (1/3), Bad Breath (1/3).

* "Nothing" also gives GLOB 2x Berserk.

Additionally, GLOB will retarget to a different player if the originally selected target is Shrouded (unless no other targets are available).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% and not Syphoned → Bushy Vines (1/2), Glob Roots (1/2).

Summon

GLOB can be captured to be used as a summon. It uses Bad Breath on a single foe, dealing light non-elemental magic damage, dispelling their buffs and saddling them with an array of status effects. Unfortunately, the last of these effects is Shroud, so the summon may be most useful for players with good memorization skills, when followed by a Wind or Holy attack to eliminate Shroud, or as a prelude to capturing a foe.

Unleashes its bad breath on a single target, which inflicts dispel, tired, curse, weaken, bad luck, and shroud - in that order. Also deals some non-elemental magic damage. 44 Kept

Trivia

  • GLOB may be inspired by the Malboro, a recurring foe in the Final Fantasy series. Like GLOB, the Malboro is a plant-like enemy with a massive mouth and a Bad Breath attack capable of inflicting multiple status conditions at once.
