―Mighty Oak to Anna, Epic Battle Fantasy 4 v3

The Mighty Oak is the first boss encountered in Epic Battle Fantasy 4. He is the guardian of Ashwood Forest, with his power over nature protecting much of the area from the effects of the cataclysmic meteorite impact that ravaged the rest of the forest.

Although he acts as a boss for the heroes to fight, the Mighty Oak is not a hostile creature. Instead, he serves to test the party's strength to determine whether or not they can withstand the trials beyond the forest. Once he is defeated by the party, he lends his strength to them as one of Anna's unique Limit Breaks.

In Epic Battle Fantasy 5, the Mighty Oak returns as Anna's ally and the source of one of her Limit Breaks, which she'll use against Matt and NoLegs when they battle her in No Man's Land. How she gained his assistance this time is unknown, but he presumably joined forces with her in defense of Greenwood Village and the Mystic Woods following the invasion of Lance and his forces.

Appearance

The Mighty Oak is a huge humanoid golem made of brown wood (presumably oak) with some silver metal augments. His entire head seems to be made from a single massive tree stump. Two round holes in the bark serve as the Oak's eyes, and his lower jaw and feet are made of steel. He has a shield mounted on his left arm and a big metal pin on his right arm. The shield has a metal border with two sharp metal spikes on the front end. Both arms also have large chains hidden within them, enabling them to be launched great distances. The Mighty Oak's head and shoulders also bear a few small twigs; the left shoulder has a few small orange leaves as well.

The Mighty Oak bears physical resemblance to both Golems and Wooden Idols. It is highly possible that he was constructed and animated in the same way as a normal Wooden Idol, being a mass of wood brought to life by magic.

Overview

The Mighty Oak mainly relies on his great physical strength in combat, delivering powerful stomps and slams with his titanic body. His arms can extend on heavy chains to strike his foes from a distance, and he can jump surprisingly high to crush enemies or create damaging quakes. Many of his skills can Stagger their targets, leaving them more vulnerable to follow-up attacks. His control of the forest allows him to perform powerful Earth-based skills (such as Lumber and Gaia Blossom), and he can sharpen his limb-mounted weapons to buff his offenses further (in addition to applying Brave on higher difficulty levels). Additionally, he fights alongside various forest creatures, summoning more if they go down.

As a boss, the Mighty Oak has an impressive amount of HP; he also enjoys high base offenses. The Battle Mountain update increased these stats further in order to make him more challenging.

The Mighty Oak has the standard boss immunity to Stun, Freeze, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death; on the other hand, he's severely vulnerable to Tired and Burn. He's also highly resistant to Earth, Wind, and all stat debuffs; on the other hand, he's weak to Thunder, Bio, and especially Fire and Dark. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, he loses his Tired weakness, becomes immune to Poison, and gains resistances to Bio and Stagger.

Defeating the Mighty Oak on Epic difficulty will reward the player with the "Lumberjack" Medal.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Berserked → Ground Pound;
  • ≥65% HP → Shield Stab (2/8), Shield Stab x2 (2/8), Lumber (1/8), Gaia Blossom (1/8), Sharpen (2/8);
  • <65% to ≥32% HP → Shield Stab x2 (1/6), Arm Shot (1/6), Ground Pound (1/6), Lumber (1/6), Gaia Blossom (1/6), Sharpen (1/6);
  • <32% HP → Arm Shot (2/6), Ground Pound (2/6), Lumber (1/6), Gaia Blossom (1/6). Passively summons a Wooden Idol every turn, with lower priority than the "every 3rd turn" ability.

Additionally,

  • Attempts to use Sharpen when Attack buff is ≥40% → Shield Stab x2;
  • Can't have more than 3 helpers at the same time.

Strategy

Equipment

As the first boss in the game, the Mighty Oak is not expected to pose much of a challenge; however, he will prove a fair bit stronger than anything you've fought so far. On higher difficulties, he becomes a very serious threat in his own right; prepare the party accordingly.

First of all, learn Protect if you haven't already. The Mighty Oak uses only Earth and non-elemental attacks, and all but one of them are physical. There isn't a lot of elemental resistance available to the players this early in the game, so physical Defence buffs (i.e. Protect) become the best way to mitigate damage. If they haven't already, have someone learn Heal More; it'll be a big help against the Mighty Oak's multi-target attacks and damage dealt by his backup.

Fire and Poison are the Mighty Oak's main weaknesses, so prepare your skills and weapons with that in mind. Many attacks of these elements can inflict Burn or Poison to further damage the boss. Anna may use her starting Fairy Bow or get the Crimson Dragon bow from Greenwood Village's Equip Shop for 3,000 gold. Matt does not have access to any weapons of the aforementioned elements yet, so he should go with Heaven's Gate; it has better Attack and his other option is Wind-elemental, which the Mighty Oak resists. Natalie's Flameheart is the best offensive choice, but the Crystal Staff's high Dispel chance is extremely valuable for this battle.

Battle

Make very liberal use of Protect; its Defence boost is crucial for survival. Try stacking it up to the buff cap, renewing it as necessary to counteract fading or enemy debuffs. Energy Drinks significantly buff a player's Evade, helping to dodge incoming attacks. Barrier isn't as important, as the Mighty Oak and his helpers mainly favor physical attacks.

Offensively, the player can constantly inflict stacks of Burn and Poison on the boss - the former especially, due to the Mighty Oak's Burn weakness - to deal considerable damage to the wooden giant over time. Inflicting Tired can also wear him down, gradually reducing the Accuracy of his otherwise-devastating attacks; however, the only source of Tired at this point in the game is Gaia Bloom, which the boss resists. Anna can inflict Poison with Ivy and the Fairy Bow, while Natalie can inflict Burn with the Flameheart: however, the latter may be infeasible for reasons mentioned below.

If the Mighty Oak buffs himself, Dispel him immediately. The offensive boost will let him run right over the party - even more so on higher difficulties, when he gets Brave on top of the stat buffs. The Crystal Staff's on-hit Dispel is probably the most consistent source of Dispel this early in the game; the Heaven's Gate can also inflict Dispel via its Seiken unleash, but this is much less reliable.

The Mighty Oak will constantly summon weak enemies such as Bats, Giant Insects, Idols, and Bushes; whether or not they're worth killing is up to the player. It may be useful to take out the foes who attack after Mighty Oak in order to prevent them from killing off a weakened character.

Trivia

  • The Mighty Oak may be inspired by the Great Deku Trees from The Legend of Zelda series.
  • The Mighty Oak is one of the few enemies in the Epic Battle Fantasy series who is not killed in battle with the players. In EBF4, he falls onto his back when his health is depleted; Anna comments that he isn't actually injured, just unable to get up. In EBF5, he only appears as Anna's Limit Break; despite this, the "Firewood" Medal (earned for beating Anna on Epic difficulty) mentions him as if he were an active participant of the battle instead of just one specific attack.
  • The Battle Mountain update of EBF4 introduced a new version of the Mighty Oak as an optional boss: the Armored Oak.
    • Defeating the Armored Oak gives the existing Mighty Oak Limit Break a chance to show up as Armored Oak instead of normal Oak, dealing more damage than usual.
  • In the v3 update of EBF4, the Mighty Oak speaks in a slow, elongated manner not unlike Treebeard from Lord of the Rings.
