Glacier Turtle

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Glacier Turtle, also known as Glacier Eater, is a recurring foe in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It primarily appears in cold areas, such as Glacier Valley (in Epic Battle Fantasy 3) and the Crystal Caverns (in Epic Battle Fantasy 4); in Epic Battle Fantasy 5, it appears in the Data Bunker following the v2 update. The latter game also makes it available as a summon.

Appearance

The Glacier Turtle is a large tortoise with scaly blue skin, four stout legs with three-toed feet, a somewhat long tail with two large ice crystals on the tip, and a beaked head with narrow black eyes and a single long horn resembling a single-edged spear tip. Its shell is a slightly darker shade of blue than its body and is covered with spiky ice crystals.

Overview

The Glacier Turtle lives up to its name by being a tough, ponderous foe that can take a beating while posing a decent threat to the party's survival. It generally prefers physical attacks, either a non-elemental horn stab against a single target or a ground-shaking stomp that hurts the entire active party (frequently being partially Earth-based), but it also has a breath attack resembling a flurry of giant snowflakes. This attack deals mild magical Ice damage over multiple hits, but it also tends to boast a decent Freeze chance that bodes ill when combined with its multi-target nature.

Like most Turtles, the Glacier Turtle can buff its defenses by briefly retreating into its shell; some games also allow this skill to slightly damage the party with a tremor. It also tends to have a decent selection of elemental resistances; aside from the obvious Ice (which is usually a full absorption), Thunder, Water, and Wind attacks are typically resisted or better. On the other hand, it's consistently weak to Fire and Earth, and poor base Evade makes it easy to hit.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Glacier Eater is fought in Waves 11 and 12 of Epic Battle Fantasy 2. In the former, it is assisted by a Red Jelly and a Blue Jelly; in the latter, it's paired with a Rock Eater.

With high HP and above-average defenses, the Glacier Eater can take quite a beating, but its low Evade won't allow it to dodge much. It mainly uses physical attacks; Horn Stab has the best power, but only hits one player, Ground Pound hits both players twice with very high Accuracy, and Shell Smash is a weak multi-target move that also buff the foe's defenses by a massive amount. Its sole magic attack, Snowflakes, is slightly inaccurate, but hits both players seven times with a chance to Freeze them solid for several turns. The first six hits have embarrassingly low Freeze chances, but the last hit has a 50/50 chance to take hold; on Epic difficulty, this rises to an 80% chance instead.

Preventing Snowflakes from Freezing the players is the primary concern when fighting a Glacier Eater. Seal will stop it from using the move entirely, but maintaining Regen (such as via the Slime Bunny summon) is another option to cure Freeze before it becomes an issue. Aside from that, focus on maintaining the party's Defence to mitigate the bulk of the Glacier Eater's damage output; if it buffs itself, try to remove it with debuffs or Matt's Unleash (with the right swords), or just focus on other foes while you wait for the buffs to fade.

The Glacier Eater halves Ice, Thunder, Water, and Wind damage, but is weak to Bomb, Fire, and Earth. The first weakness is particularly exploitable if Matt has taken the Air Support or Cat Warrior Skill Bonuses, allowing him to potentially inflict passive Bomb damage between turns.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

Befitting its species and appearance, the Glacier Eater has low Evade and high bulk; it can amplify the latter by buffing its defenses with its Shell Smash attack, which also inflicts light non-elemental physical damage to the entire party. It can also perform a Ground Pound, which trades the buffing effect for a strong Earth element and slightly higher power over two hits. Its Horn Stab is its strongest attack, but lacks any special effects and hits only one player at a time. In terms of magic attacks, its Snowflakes hit the whole party three times for modest pure Ice damage; each hit has a small Freeze chance that increases dramatically on Epic difficulty.

The Glacier Eater will spam Snowflakes once its HP is low, which can be problematic or useful depending on the party's strategy. If they lack sufficient Ice/Freeze resistance, the player should try and kill the foe before it hits that threshold; alternatively, they can afflict it with Syphon or Berserk to lock it out of the move. These status effects also disable Shell Smash, making the Glacier Eater somewhat easier to kill without Dispel or Crush support; Defence buffs are recommended to dampen the effect of the tortoise's remaining attacks.

The Glacier Eater absorbs Ice and Water while being immune to Wind and Thunder, but it is weak to Bomb, Fire, and especially Earth. It's also very susceptible to Berserk, which limits it to Horn Stab at the cost of making it more powerful; this can be exploited by using Unleash with the Flameheart or the Red Vulcan, both of which also hit the foe's second-worst weakness.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Aside from the poor Evade mentioned in its Bestiary entry, the Glacier Turtle has above-average Magic Defence which can be further amplified by its Shell Smash; this skill also buffs its Attack and gives it Defend for a turn. On the offensive side of things, it can jab a single player with its horn for non-elemental physical damage, hit everyone with a Ground Pound for light part-Earth physical damage, or spit out Snowflakes to hit everyone with modest magical Ice damage. On higher difficulty levels, its Shell Smash also casts Tundra on a random player, inflicting part-Ice physical damage with no additional effects.

The Glacier Turtle's multi-target moves can inflict Stagger or Freeze, but the status chances are low enough to be nullified by most of the relevant equipment even at Level 1. If that's not an option, Evade-based strategies can help worsen their below-average Accuracy; however, it's typically more reliable to disable them entirely. Syphon stops the Turtle from using Snowflakes, and Berserk forces it to spam Ground Pound; even without Defence buffs or Earth resistance, the power boost won't be too significant unless it has additional Attack buffs. Offensively, focus on physical attacks to circumvent its magical bulk; Giga Drill is highly effective after it buffs itself, especially if Matt is using it with a high-Attack build.

As you might expect, the Glacier Turtle absorbs Ice and is impossible to Freeze, but it's also nearly immune to Thunder, Water, and Wind while resisting Bomb, Stun, Doom, and Instant Death. On the other hand, it's extremely weak to Fire and Earth; Bio is also effective to a slightly lesser extent. If "More Foe Resistance" is active, it becomes neutral to Bio and resistant to Weaken, Tired, and Curse.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Befitting the Data Bunker simulations it's normally encountered in, the Glacier Eater is heavily based on its EBF2 incarnation, albeit with some refinements. It can use a single-target Horn Stab for non-elemental physical damage, but it has two types of multi-target quake attacks to deal part-Earth physical damage. Ground Pound hits twice and does more damage, but Shell Smash enables it to drastically buff both of its defenses on top of slightly harming the party. Its sole magic attack inflicts seven hits of pure Ice damage; none are terribly powerful, but they all have a decent Freeze chance. The last hit in particular has a 50% infliction rate (increased to 100% on Hard or Epic difficulty) in addition to being a bit more accurate than the Eater's other moves.

The Glacier Eater's Freezing abilities are its most dangerous trait, especially since it favors Snowflakes over its other moves (and even has a chance to counter with it when "Counter-Attacking Foes" is active). If you can't build up enough Freeze resistance to nullify the move, it's best to stop the foe from using it all by inflicting Syphon or Berserk; the latter also forces it to spam a powered-up Horn Stab. It's also not completely immune to Stun, Doom, or Instant Death, which a status build can exploit to neutralize it temporarily or permanently; below-average Evade leaves it more vulnerable to The Reaper for a quick elimination. To kill it conventionally, Anna is a useful party member; Nitro Blitz hits one of the Glacier Eater's weaknesses and reliably Dispels its buffs.

Like all Classic foes, the Glacier Eater ignores Lovable and can't be made Invisible or Enchanted. Additionally, it's immune to all status effects besides Poison, Virus, Dispel, Syphon, Stun, Doom, and Instant Death (the last three of which it resists), and it has a modest resistance to non-HP debuffs. In terms of elements, it resists Ice, Thunder, Water, and Wind while being weak to Bomb, Fire, and Earth. "More Foe Resistance" turns its Earth weakness into a resistance while improving its Stun, Doom and Death resistances and making it very resistant to Syphon and Dispel.

The Glacier Eater is somewhat notable for theoretically being the best source of Solid Water among foes; however, the second and especially third drop aren't guaranteed. It also carries a Sapphire and a Moon Pearl, but their drop rates are far too low for farming purposes.

The Glacier Eater can be captured and used as a summon; the Alt Cold Steel has a chance to call it between turns as well. It uses Snowflakes to hit the entire enemy wave seven times; the magical Ice damage is negligible, but the last hit has a great chance to inflict two stacks of Freeze.
