Jack

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Jack is a recurring boss/miniboss in the Epic Battle Fantasy series, as well as a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is first encountered as the boss of Vegetable Forest in Epic Battle Fantasy 3; in Epic Battle Fantasy 4, it is a miniboss in Lankyroot Jungle following the Battle Mountain update. In Epic Battle Fantasy 5, it appears in the Data Bunker as the boss of the first EBF3 simulation.

Appearance

Jack is a large, round-bodied robot with a brownish-orange outer shell styled to resemble a jack o' lantern. It has large, powerful arms, four small legs, a single orange-red eye that serves as its only facial feature, and a tiny gold crown on the top of its head. The large face on the front of its body doubles as the ports for several concealed weapons, including machine guns in its eye sockets and flamethrowers in its mouth.

In Epic Battle Fantasy 4, Jack's appearance is slightly different, losing its crown and gaining bright orange outer plating.

While it is never seen doing so in-game, Jack's design and bestiary entries imply that it can retract its head and limbs into its body to better resemble a pumpkin.

Overview

While Jack's location and status changes with each game, its tactics and abilities are fairly consistent. It uses its large arms for single-target punches (sometimes three in quick succession) and an overhead crush attack that hits all players. It can also deploy the weapons hidden in its body for multi-target elemental damage; its machine guns deal physical Bomb damage, while its flamethrowers inflict magical Fire damage with a good chance of debuffs or a hindering status effect. Jack also has the ability to summon reinforcements, sometimes coupled with a buff to itself or the entire wave.

Across all of its appearances, Jack is consistently weak to Thunder and Bomb while resisting Fire and being immune to Wind and Bio. Aside from the standard boss immunity to Stun, Freeze, and Instant Death, it is also immune to Poison and Burn.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

As the first boss of the game, Jack is fairly straightforward; most of its challenge comes from the party's relative lack of options when they encounter it. It mostly uses strong physical attacks, including non-elemental punches that hit one target, an Earth-based Crush attack that hits the whole party, and a Bomb-elemental machine gun barrage that hits random targets. It's also armed with flamethrowers that fries all players with magical Fire damage while debuffing their Defence; on Epic difficulty, this also gives Jack a massive Attack buff. The boss can also summon weak forest enemies to assist it, such as Bushes, Veggie Slimes, or Cat Soldiers; on Epic, it does this automatically after its Crush attack.

Jack is vulnerable to Earth, Thunder, and especially Bomb, giving all three players a means to damage it effectively; conversely, its Fire resistance can be worked around and its immunity to Bio and Wind isn't particularly notable. It's also immune to Poison, Berserk, Stun, and Instant Death.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Jack favors strong physical skills to exploit its great base Attack, with one magic attack for variety. It can punch a single player (sometimes three times at once) or hit them with Eruption; the former is non-elemental while the latter is partly Fire-based. Its Crush attack deals non-elemental damage to the entire party, with one player taking the brunt of the blow; this attack also has a decent Stagger chance that increases on higher difficulty levels. Its Machine Guns hit random players for part-Bomb physical damage; with 12 hits, it's likely that the entire party will take significant damage. Its sole magic attack deals three hits of pure Fire damage to all players; each hit also has a good chance to inflict Berserk.

Every few turns, Jack will call for Drill Bot and Steel Fish reinforcements if the relevant slots are open on the enemy side. It immediately follows up with a multi-target buff that grants Brave status on top of a decent Attack and Defence buff, greatly increasing the foes' physical threat level.

Jack takes no damage from Fire, Bio, and Wind, but is severely weak to Thunder, Bomb, and Water. It is immune to Burn, Poison, Stun, Freeze, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death, and is strongly resistant to all debuffs. "More Foe Resistance" gives it an additional Ice immunity while reducing its weaknesses to Thunder and Water.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

As a throwback to EBF3, Jack has similar stats, skills, and behavior as its original appearance; however, it's much stronger due to its new status as an optional late-game boss. It has non-elemental punch attacks, a centered Crush attack with a slight Earth degree, and two multi-target attacks: a Bomb-based machine gun salvo and a magical Fire blast that hits several times and cripples the whole party's Defence. Some of its moves allow it to summon Slingers as reinforcements; if "Foe Remix" is enabled, it'll call Clays instead. Its only notable stat is slightly above-average Accuracy, which helps counteract the lower-than-normal accuracy of its weapon attacks.

On higher difficulty levels, the debuff chance on Jack's Flamethrower becomes much higher, and its dedicated Reinforcements skill also buffs its offensive stats (note that this does not apply to the reinforcements summoned by Crush and Machine Guns).

Jack's primary weakness is Thunder, but it also takes extra damage from Bomb and Earth attacks; on the other hand, it resists Fire and is immune to Bio, Wind, and every single status effect except for Dispel, which it resists instead. Additionally, it significantly resists debuffs to all of its stats except for HP. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" makes it immune to Water, neutral to Earth, and less vulnerable to Thunder.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

  • The 6th turn and then every 5th turn → Reinforcements;
  • Syphoned → Punch (1/3), Triple Punch (1/3), Crush (1/3);
  • ≥28.5% HP → Triple Punch (1/4), Crush (1/4), Machine Guns (1/4), Flamethrower (1/4);
  • <28.5% HP → Punch (1/5), Triple Punch (1/5), Crush (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Flamethrower (1/5).

There's another pattern present for Jack:

  • Crush (1/3), Machine Guns (1/3), Flamethrower (1/3)

Sharing the problem with certain other EBF3 foes, it is never used due to some oddities in how it was programmed.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • The 4th turn and then every 3rd turn → Reinforcements;
  • Berserked or/and Syphoned → Triple Punch;
  • ≥49% HP → Punch (1/5), Crush (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Flamethrower (1/5), Eruption (1/5);
  • <49% HP → Triple Punch (1/5), Crush (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Flamethrower (1/5), Eruption (1/5).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Action

  • Every 5th turn → Reinforcements;
  • <39% HP → Crush (1/3), Machine Guns (1/3), Flamethrower (1/3);
  • <69% HP → Triple Punch (1/4), Crush (1/4), Machine Guns (1/4), Flamethrower (1/4);
  • Otherwise → Punch (1/5), Triple Punch (1/5), Crush (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Flamethrower (1/5).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • If HP% is lower than Blood Counter → 100% → Machine Guns (1/2), Flamethrower (1/2).

* Blood Counter starts at 80 and gets reduced by 20 every time Jack counters.

Additionally, like all the Classic foes, Jack ignores the Lovable status on players.

Strategy

Naturally, prioritizing weapons that use the elements Jack is weak to (Thunder, Bomb, Earth/Water) is a good idea, as well as equipment that gives resistance to its elements used.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

First, kill Jack's allies — he'll summon more later on, but right now this will lower the amount of damage you'd take per turn. Multi-target Limit Breaks work well for that task. Then you can start go offensive on the boss itself. Tremor (or better yet, Quake) combined with the Gaia Axe can deal good damage; Double Shot combined with the Heavy Claw can lower Jack's defence while landing reasonably strong hits, which will allow you to dish out more damage with subsequent physical attacks.

Natalie's role in this battle is mostly to aid party members with Heal and/or Healmore, and cast Thunder (or Thunderbolt with a bit of grinding) on Jack if she gets a free turn. If Kyun is available, she should save it for when Matt and Lance are ready to use powerful attacks of their own (preferably their Limit Breaks), or when the entire party is on the verge of being overwhelmed by the enemies.

Alternatively, debuff Jack's Magic Defence via Matt's Fright, then proceed with throwing Captain Hat-powered Hand Bombs at the boss. Items are extremely strong early in the game, likely killing Jack off in a few shots.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Equipment

Obviously, the party should be armed with Water and Thunder since both elements compliment each other immensely in this battle. Bomb and Fire resistance may be helpful, as these are the only two elements Jack uses besides non-elemental attacks. Most of Jack's attacks are physical, making high Defence important. Sources of Bless, such as the Clover Pin, are recommended in this battle due to one attack in particular.

Battle

In the path-blocking fight in Lankyroot Jungle, Jack begins the battle with a Florn and a Frose on its side; in the Miniboss Rush of Battle Mountain, the boss enters the battle with two Heasies instead. Kill off the Heasies as soon as possible — the last thing you want is the boss getting healed (for about 2/15 of Jack's maximum health with the strongest skill), or worse, Blessed. Keeping the Frose alive can actually be optimal, as its frequent usage of Cloudburst can be exploited to increase all Thunder-elemental damage dealt towards the boss.

Against Jack, the optimal strategy is to hit it with Water attacks to inflict Wet (Flood, Aqua Arrow and Cloudburst are most effective), and then use everyone else's Thunder skills. Anna, Lance and Matt all have access to strong single-target Thunder skills (Spark Arrow, Plasma Field and Big Spark, respectively). Natalie's best option - Thunderbolt - has noticeably less power, and thus she will function better as support.

One of Jack's most disruptive attacks is its Flamethrower, which deals Fire damage to all players and has a high chance to inflict Berserk on them. This can ruin the player's strategy, and if everyone is Berserk, there is no way to cure it until at least one character recovers. At the same time, Berserk may not be so debilitating if the players are equipped with the proper weapons; In this case, Berserk will help them to deal much more damage. There is no equipment that provides resistance against Berserk; the only way to avoid it is through Bless or simply being lucky enough to avoid being afflicted by Jack's Flamethrower. However, due to the Berserk mechanics of EBF4, the party will automatically lose 1 stack of Berserk at the end of the enemies' turn; this means that they'll only have to suffer for two turns at most, even if all three hits of the Flamethrower attack inflicted the status.

Whenever Jack summons reinforcements, the whole enemy side also gets several stat buffs and Brave. These buffs are best Dispelled immediately with Dispel or Crush, although the latter can only target one enemy. If using Crush, the player should Dispel the most threatening enemy: Jack itself.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Equipment

Bomb and Fire resistance are advised to reduce the effectiveness of Jack's multi-target attacks; Earth resistance is less important, as Crush is only 30% elemental. Try to focus on high Defence, as both Jack and its backup tend to favor physical attacks; equipment that provides Morale can help prevent the Defence debuff from Flamethrower.

Trivia

  • As mentioned in Concept Art section of Epic Battle Fantasy 3 Gallery, the design for Jack came from a DeviantArt member named Xyionan, who called his design "King Pumpkinbot".
  • Jack's name and appearance are a pun on "jack-o-lantern".
  • In EBF3, Matt comments that the first boss will "be a giant vegetable". Given that Jack is a robotic pumpkin, this is false but the concept is pretty close. (Pumpkins are often considered fruits, though in terms of cooking this is irrelevant.)
    • Despite looking wholly metallic, Jack's item drops and EBF4 bestiary description imply that its armor at least partially consists of pumpkin.
  • The crown Jack wears in EBF3 and 5 is incredibly similar to the Gold Crown in EBF4.
    • If the Gold Crown is Jack's crown, this may explain Jack's different look in EBF4, the only game so far where Jack appears without a crown.
