Red Clay

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Red Clay is a foe that appears in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5 (also being a summon in the latter), as well as Adventure Story. In EBF3, it appears in Rock Lake and the Kitten Kingdom Ruins; in EBF4, it is primarily found in the Crystal Caverns, but a few appear in Lankyroot Jungle and the Temple of Godcat. In EBF5, it appears in the Data Bunker as one of the Classic foes; a "Foe Remix" Custom Game has it appear elsewhere as well.

Appearance

Like all Clays, the Red Clay is a living statue in the form of an armored humanoid warrior. It is primarily a dull brown, but lives up to its name with significant red details, including its arms, skirt, and the sides of its torso. It also has a yellow belt buckle and a yellow plate serving as a "face"; the latter has a red sigil resembling a capital "N" with a tiny perpendicular line on its right tip.

Aside from color, the Red Clay can be distinguished from its brethren by its blocky, almost cube-shaped helmet and its weapon of choice; a clay sword with a broad, double-edged blade.

Overview

The Red Clay is a mid-tier foe that specializes in moderately damaging single-target physical attacks. It mainly uses Earth moves, supplemented by a few Fire skills; they rarely have any secondary effects, instead focusing on pure damage. In general, the Red Clay isn't an especially threatening opponent as long as the player doesn't act recklessly.

Red Clays typically absorb Fire while being immune to Thunder and Bio. On the other hand, they tend to take extra damage from Bomb, Water, and Ice.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Red Clay is a decently powerful foe with physical Earth and Fire attacks, each targeting a single player. It can slash them with its sword for slightly Earth-based damage; its singular Slash is more accurate, but Multi-Slash is stronger overall and has a slightly boosted chance to score a critical hit (it also gains extra hits on Epic difficulty). It can also stab the ground to cast Quake or a Fire attack; both are half-elemental, so resistance is slightly more effective against them than the Clay's sword strikes.

Interestingly, the Red Clay has two Fire skills in its moveset, but it'll only use one depending on its level. It uses Fume until it reaches Level 16, at which point it switches to Eruption; the latter is stronger than Fume, but it's a little less accurate.

At low HP, the Red Clay will eschew its other moves in favor of spamming Multi-Slash, which can be quite dangerous if not dealt with properly. Earth resistance isn't too helpful, due to Multi-Slash's low elemental degree, but an Evade-heavy strategy can take advantage of its below-average Accuracy; alternatively, finishing it off before the damage can add up is an option, especially given its easily exploitable weaknesses. If Berserked or Syphoned, it will be locked to using its Slash and Multi-Slash attacks, only using the latter when Berserk and both when Syphoned.

The Red Clay absorbs Fire and Earth and is immune to Thunder, Wind, and Bio, but it's extremely weak to Water; Ice and Bomb are less severe but more accessible options for hitting it hard. Its status resistances are very sparse, being limited to a Poison immunity.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Red Clay can use a variety of non-elemental sword attacks, two of which hit multiple times. Its weakest, most basic attack also unleashes Ember to deal some extra magical Fire damage to their target; it also sports a small chance to inflict a mild Burn. The Clay can also cast Quake and Fume to deal physical part-Earth or part-Fire damage, respectively; the former is its strongest and most accurate move.

The Red Clay is a very straightforward offensive threat; it hits decently hard, but it can only hurt one player at a time and it has almost no special effects to its moves. It typically has no pattern to speak of, but Syphon and Berserk will lock it out of Quake and Fume; the former is preferable in order to avoid giving its attacks a boost.

The Red Clay absorbs Fire and is immune to Thunder and Bio, while being weak to Water, Ice, Earth, and especially Bomb. It's also immune to Poison, but all other debuffs and status ailments will be fully effective. All of the playable characters have a means to hit it hard, but Anna is especially effective; she can use Log, Aqua Arrow, or Frost Arrow to severely damage the Clay while setting up further combos via Stagger, Wet, and Freeze. Enabling the "More Foe Resistance" challenge allows the Red Clay to absorb Earth while reducing its Bomb weakness and making it resistant to Weaken, Doom and Instant Death.

The Red Clay has a chance to drop a Ruby when defeated, but the drop rate is too low to be relied upon for farming.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

As a Classic foe, the Red Clay uses moves based on its Epic Battle Fantasy 3 incarnation. Its sword attacks deal very slightly Earth-based physical damage, with Multi-Slash being significantly stronger but less accurate. It can also cast Volcano and Quake to deal more focused elemental damage; the former is notable as its only Fire attack and its most dangerous move. Not only is it more powerful and accurate than any of the Red Clay's other skills, it has a chance to debuff the victim's Defence, which both the Clay and its usual allies can easily exploit.

Higher difficulty levels add more hits to the Red Clay's Multi-Slash, making it its most powerful attack. Volcano remains dangerous, however, especially since its debuff chance doubles to a very respectable 50%.

Morale can be useful to prevent Volcano's debuff; this is even more important when the Red Clay starts spamming it and Quake at low HP. Syphon and Berserk can lock it into its basic sword attacks; the latter also prevents Multi-Slash in exchange for making Slash a bit stronger. As with all Classic foes, don't bother trying Lovable strategies or inflicting Invisible and Enchanted; the Red Clay is unaffected by any of these statuses. On the other hand, its few status vulnerabilities provide options to neutralize it effectively; Doom and Instant Death can easily kill it outright, but Stun may be more useful if the Red Clay is backing up a boss.

The Red Clay absorbs Fire and Earth while being immune to Thunder, Bio, and a bevy of status effects; the only ones it's not immune to are Stun, Syphon, Dispel, Doom, and Instant Death. It's also modestly resistant to all debuffs aside from HP. On the other hand, it takes extra damage from Bomb, Water, and especially Ice; the latter is so severe that it literally doubles the power of the party's Ice attacks (and somewhat compensates for the foe's immunity to damage-boosting statuses). With the "More Foe Resistance" challenge enabled, the Red Clay becomes resistant to Water, Stun, Doom, and Instant Death, and its Bomb weakness becomes less severe.

  • 33% → Slash.

Additionally, like all the Classic foes, the Red Clay ignores the Lovable status on players.

Summon

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Red Clay can be captured and used as a summon. It uses a modified version of its Multi-Slash on a single foe, hitting them five times for purely Earth-based physical damage; this also has an extremely high chance to afflict the target with nine stacks of Heavy. Although it's hardly the only source of the status and a Pet Rock status build can have an even better chance of Heavy infliction, the sheer amount of Heavy applied by the summon can be useful for a prolonged barrage of follow-up Earth moves.

Trivia

  • The Red Clay's casting stance is similar to the one used by Matt for some of his Bushido attacks. Matt himself can point this out when battling a Red Clay in EBF3.
