Nuclear Bomb

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Nuclear Bomb is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 2 and 5. In both games, it appears primarily as a "turret" for Lance's tank (the Valkyrie in EBF2 and the Neon Valkyrie in EBF5), but in EBF5, it is occasionally seen among regular enemy waves in the Iron Fortress and The Rapture.

Appearance

True to its name, the Nuclear Bomb is a large missile with a nuclear warhead. It has a red tip, a grey body, and a clearly demarcated "radiation" symbol on its side, along with a black and yellow hazard stripe. It is mounted on a metallic grey frame to stabilize it until it's ready to launch.

Prior to EBF5, the Nuclear Bomb had a more pointed tip in a darker shade of red, as well as a much larger hazard stripe positioned above its radiation symbol. EBF5 also added a device to its launch frame with three colored lights to indicate its readiness to fire.

Overview

The Nuclear Bomb is one of the most straightforward foes in the entire Epic Battle Fantasy series. It launches itself at the party and explodes spectacularly for enormous amounts of damage; fortunately, it needs a few turns to prepare itself for this, during which time it is completely vulnerable to attack. Status effects like Stun can be used to delay its countdown while Thunder and Bomb attacks work well to destroy it; on the other hand, Bio and Poison are all but useless.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Nuke may be summoned as a random turret during the Valkyrie Tank's second phase. When its countdown reaches 0, it will launch itself on its next turn and explode for massive non-elemental damage, easily capable of killing Matt and Natalie in one strike. The length of its countdown decreases on higher difficulty levels, to the point where it'll only take two turns to launch on Epic; Hard and Epic difficulties also give it the ability to buff the Valkyrie Tank's offensive stats if it's destroyed by the party (instead of by exploding on its own).

Fortunately, the Nuke is relatively fragile compared to other components of the boss, especially when hit with its elemental weaknesses; Airstrike and Ion Cannon are probably the best options to destroy it quickly. Alternatively, Stun effects from Stunners, the Blizzard's Unleash, and maybe Thunderbolt (particularly with the Thunderclap Skill Bonus) can be used to stall its countdown. Like all of the final boss helpers, hitting it will also damage the Valkyrie slightly.

The "Oblivion" Medal requires you to be hit by a Nuke (Matt and Natalie's survival is optional).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

After two games of being relegated to Lance's Limit Break, the Nuclear Bomb returns as an enemy that functions similarly to its EBF2 self; the main difference being that it launches on the same turn the countdown reaches 0, instead of one turn after. It takes four turns to launch, with the countdown indicated by the number it displays on its turn and the three lamps on the side of its frame; if the topmost green light is on, it will attack on its next turn. While its explosion deals massive damage, being pure Fire-elemental makes it easy to resist; on the other hand, its ability to change the weather to Radiation is a serious problem. Certain summons or Limit Breaks can be used to change the weather, but note that the bomb's weather will first activate prior to the party's turn; as such, it's usually better to destroy the bomb before it can launch.

Fortunately, the Nuclear Bomb has a plethora of elemental weaknesses and can be easily debilitated by many status effects. Wet combos work very well to kill it, since it's weak to Water, Ice, and especially Thunder; Heavy is an option for increasing the damage of its serious Earth weakness. It's impossible to Stagger, but Stun and Freeze stall its countdown for their duration, Syphon can cause it to fizzle out and Surrender on its launch turn (and only its launch turn, mind you), and Instant Death destroys it outright.

If "More Foe Resistance" is active, the bomb resists Fire, Water and Syphon while gaining a Dark absorption. Weapon-elemental skills with the Baby Penguin or the Pet Rock equipped will be more effective than the likes of Bubble Blast or Pulsar to apply the damage-boosting statuses (which it still doesn't resist), and status-boosting equipment can help circumvent its increased Syphon resistance.

Keep in mind that the Nuclear Bomb loses its Earth weakness if it's deployed by the Neon Valkyrie and only takes three turns to launch itself if it appears in the Battle Arena.

Unlike most foes in EBF5 and like other Bombs, the Nuclear Bomb cannot be captured to be used as a summon.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

  • Counter = 0 → Launch;
  • Counter > 0 → Decrease Counter by 1.

* Counter starts at 4 on Zero/Easy, 3 on Normal, 2 on Hard, and 1 on Epic or higher.

Additionally, if playing on Hard or higher difficulties, the Nuke will use its Buff on the Valkyrie when it's defeated (dying because of its Launch attack doesn't count).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

  • Counter = 1 and Syphoned → Surrender;
  • Counter = 1 → Decrease Counter by 1 → Launch;
  • Counter > 1 → Decrease Counter by 1.

* Counter starts at 4 (3 when fought in the Battle Arena).

Unlike most other foes, the Nuclear Bomb doesn't get a counter when Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.

Trivia

  • The Bestiary in Epic Battle Fantasy 2 identifies the Nuke as a "V3 Rocket." This is one of many Nazi allusions in Lance's EBF2 appearance; in this case, a parallel to the V1 and V2 missiles used by Nazi Germany in the final months of World War 2.
  • The Big Bullet skill summons a projectile resembling the upper half of the Nuclear Bomb, with a few visual alterations (like white stripes on the tip and a different sticker on the side).
