"YOU!! I SAW WHAT YOU DID! Those things don't belong to you! I'm not going to let you get away with that!"
―Natalie confronting Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Natalie is a miniboss and the second player character to be fought in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. After Matt and NoLegs steal the Shovel from the Farmer's Market of Hope Harbor, she appears right in front of the stairs leading to the Grand Gallery. The player can attempt to walk around her, but the battle will start when they try to go east beyond a certain point.

After Natalie is defeated, she will recruit Matt and NoLegs as bodyguards for her journey to the southern continent in order to investigate the recent meteor impact and the appearance of monoliths around the world.

Appearance

Natalie looks like how she typically would: a fair-skinned young lady with blue eyes, orange hair, and a...memorable figure. She has the same equipment as her playable self; since she doesn't become playable until after you defeat her, this means that she's using her default combination of the Red Ribbon, the Red Dress, and the Dark Tooth.

Overview

As the second player boss, Natalie isn't much tougher than NoLegs, but she can be a credible threat if left to her own devices. She has above-average Magic Defence and immense Magic Attack; on the other hand, her Defence is lower than normal. She has a weak physical attack that deals slight Dark damage, but she prefers to use her array of Fire, Thunder, Ice, and non-elemental spells. Her magic can also inflict Burn, Freeze, and Stun, but the chances are low enough to be almost negligible.

On higher Difficulty levels, Natalie gains an all-new litany of more powerful spells; notably, she can no longer inflict non-elemental damage. Aside from hitting harder, these spells have higher status infliction chances, although they still aren't that likely to trigger.

Natalie has the standard boss immunity to Doom, Instant Death, Chill, Freeze, and Stun; she also resists Holy and Dark while having no weaknesses. If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, she gains resistances to Fire, Thunder, and Ice.

Like NoLegs before her, Natalie can be forced to Surrender if certain conditions are met; in this case, both Matt and NoLegs must be Lovable at the start of her turn. Doing so will give you the "Nice Guy" medal.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Normal Attack;
  • Otherwise → Normal Attack (1/4);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Fireball (1/4), Iceshard (1/4), Thunderbolt (1/4);
    • Otherwise → Lucky Star (3/16), Fire (3/16), Ice (3/16), Thunder (3/16).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 100%;
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Fireball (1/3), Iceshard (1/3), Thunderbolt (1/3);
    • Otherwise → Lucky Star (1/4), Fire (1/4), Ice (1/4), Thunder (1/4).

Strategy

Equipment

While the player won't have many options at this point in the game, the battle is easy enough that equipment choice is generally irrelevant. However, the player may want to avoid using the Knight's Helmet or the Heroic Armor if possible; while they have strong stats and a useful Thunder resistance, their weakness to Fire may be more trouble than it's worth.

Surrender Strategy

Natalie will automatically Surrender if both members of the party are Lovable at the start of her turn. This can be attained easily with two uses of NoLegs's Cherish; during its cooldown, you can have him and Matt Defend themselves, set up defensive buffs, or use items to keep themselves healthy and speed up Cherish's cooldown. It's generally a better idea to use Cherish on NoLegs first and let Matt Defend himself to mitigate Natalie's attacks; this leaves NoLegs free to cast Barrier and further reduce incoming damage. Protect is generally unnecessary; Natalie's only physical attack is fairly weak compared to her spells.

Combat Strategy

If the player wishes to fight Natalie directly instead of making her Surrender, they should keep in mind that she essentially just uses Fire/Ice/Thunder, or Fireball/Iceshard/Thunderbolt on harder difficulties. While these are fairly basic skills for her, her high Magic Attack stat gives them reasonable power; to top it off, her Fire magic will be extremely effective against a character wearing the Knight's Helmet and/or the Heroic Armor. Keep in mind that Natalie can inflict Burn, Freeze and Stun on her targets, though the odds of this are low (but noticeably higher on harder difficulties). As with the Surrender strategy, maintain Barrier to reduce most of her damage output.

Since Natalie's Magic Defence is much higher than her Defence, physical attacks are most effective against her. Fortunately, both Matt and NoLegs specialize in physical attacks, so the player only has to avoid using magic-based summons and NoLegs's few offensive spells. While Natalie has no elemental weaknesses, she only resists Holy and Dark (add Fire, Ice, and Thunder if "More Foe Resistance" is enabled), so the party should have plenty of options to take her down. If you feel the need to use a Limit Break, Cleaver is probably the best option; both of NoLegs's Limit Breaks use elements that Natalie resists.

Trivia

  • As with all player bosses in EBF5, Natalie's appearance in the bestiary will show her with the gear she has currently equipped as a player. Her appearance as a boss will not change if she's fought during a "Randomized Equip Locations" Custom Game; her "real" loadout will only being revealed when she joins the party after her defeat.
