Dark Tooth

The Dark Tooth is a Dark-elemental staff available for Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5. It is also her weapon of choice during Epic Battle Fantasy 2, although it has no gameplay relevance.

Description

The Dark Tooth is made of black metal, with an elaborate head resembling two diamonds laid over each other in a way that they form a third diamond with their overlapping points. Each diamond has small spikes protruding from its sides and a red orb set in its center; put together, they fill the spaces between each diamond's points.

In EBF3 and EBF4, the Dark Tooth has red ribbons wrapped around the middle of its shaft, presumably to improve the wielder's grip. In EBF5, these ribbons are replaced with smaller ribbons wrapped around the base of its head and the bottom of the staff, near its pointed pommel. Additionally, the orbs on its head turn purple if it is equipped while Natalie wears the Dark Gown.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Dark Tooth serves as Natalie's "glass cannon" staff; it massively increases her Magic Attack while reducing her HP, defenses, and Holy resistance. The combination allows Natalie to swiftly demolish foes with powerful spells while being very vulnerable to attack in turn; fortunately, there are very few Holy attacks in the endgame, and the final boss can't even use Holy attacks unless it shifts to the right element and has Rune Claw support.

The Dark Tooth's Unleash deals very high magical Dark damage, but cripples Natalie's Magic Attack and Magic Defence for subsequent turns. It can also counter attacks with Pulse, letting Natalie punish her attackers with a decent Dark spell if she survives. If its frailty is too much of a hassle, the Obsidian is a weaker but less risky alternative for a Dark-based staff; if a change of element isn't an issue, the Crystal Staff and the Nimbus are other options for safer "generalist" staves.

The Dark Tooth is slightly weak to Holy, with the degree remaining constant at all forging levels. It also resists Syphon, becoming fully immune at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Dark Tooth is one of the staves added with the v3 update of the game. It grants a below average boost to Magic Attack, alongside a decent boost to Attack, and minor boosts to MP and Magic Defence. It can counter enemy attacks with Pulse, and may randomly cast Tartarus between turns for major Dark damage with a high chance to inflict Syphon to all enemies.

While the Dark Tooth's has rather subpar magic attack, it makes up for it with its rather powerful counter and random cast, both of which benefit from the staff's boost to Dark skills, overall making it a powerful staff for focused Dark offence. However, this does mean the staff becomes significantly less useful if fighting foes that are neutral or resistant to Dark, making it more of a situational pick. The Dark Tooth's main competitor for balanced Dark offence is the Death Scythe, which has arguably better stats at the expense of worse effects and resistances, though the Dark Tooth has the advantage of being available much earlier into the game.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Normal

The Dark Tooth resembles the EBF3 version of the Obsidian Staff, providing an average boost to Magic Attack and Attack, as well as slightly boosting Defence and Magic Defence and enhancing Natalie's Dark attacks. It can counter attacks with Dark Pulse and has a chance to Dispel enemy buffs with its Weapon-elemental attacks, but its true power lies in its Space Distortion unleash. This skill deals good magical Dark damage while inflicting three stacks of Invisible and potentially debuffing the victim's Magic Defence. While this may interfere with a physical attacker's plans (which is most of the party until after the Iron Fortress is cleared), this combination allows Natalie to massively increase the magic damage an enemy takes for several attacks (including damage from statuses like Burn, Poison and Virus).

Later in the game, the Dark Tooth's damage stacking abilities can be further amplified with Flairs that replace its on-hit Dispel with an element-boosting status effect. However, it also has to contend with the Obsidian Staff, which can naturally inflict Invisible and Dry in a single Normal Attack on top of having much more offensive power; on the other hand, the Dark Tooth lacks defensive penalties and is available much earlier.

The Dark Tooth resists Dark, Bad Luck, Curse and Dispel. It becomes immune to all but the first at Level 5.

Equip Remix

The Alt Dark Tooth is effectively the reincarnation of the classic Crystal Staff; a balanced weapon with tri-elemental properties. Aside from fair offenses and modest defenses, it improves the power of Fire, Ice, and Thunder skills, which Natalie can easily take advantage of. It also has a decent chance to Dispel foes with weapon-elemental skills.

The Alt Dark Tooth is a very useful early-game weapon; it can be upgraded to Level 3 as soon as Natalie joins the party, and its elemental boosts make her hit a lot harder than you might expect. While it can be eclipsed by stronger but riskier staves that become available later on (like the Alt Wrath of Zeus and the Alt Slime Staff), it remains a versatile and reliable option for balanced Natalie builds, especially if its boosts are stacked with those of the Alt Red Dress.

Broadly speaking, the Alt Dark Tooth could be seen as another flavor of the Alt Dragon Wings, with decent offenses and several elemental boosts. Compared to the Alt Dragon Wings, its Magic Attack is a tiny bit lower, it boosts one less element, and it lacks Evade, but it synergizes with Natalie's natural skills, has a little bulk, and is available much earlier.

The Alt Dark Tooth resists Fire, Ice and Thunder. None of these become an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Dark Tooth is used by Natalie as her weapon of choice. Unlike Matt's Swords, it is purely cosmetic and does not provide any stat changes.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Dark Tooth is found inside a chest in the restricted 40 Medals Area, which becomes accessible after getting 40 Medals.

Trivia

  • One of Matt Roszak's DeviantArt posts features an alternative design of the Dark Tooth, which lacks the red details and adds long white tassels to the spikes. This seems to be the version used for the staff's equipment icon in EBF3, which depicts its orbs as the same shade of black as the rest of the staff.
  • The Dark Tooth is the only staff to appear in all of EBF3, 4, and 5.
  • The Dark Tooth and the Obsidian Staff essentially swapped roles between EBF3 and EBF5. In the former game, the Dark Tooth was Natalie's "glass cannon" staff while the Obsidian was a Dark-boosting generalist weapon; in the latter game, it's the opposite.
