The Leaf Turtle, also known as Leaf Eater, is a nature-themed foe that appears in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. It typically appears in wooded areas, such as Vegetable Forest and Lankyroot Jungle.

Appearance

The Leaf Eater is a large, olive green turtle with a single horn on its head. Its shell is an earthy brown, with a variety of vegetation growing from it, including a small tree or shrub, several flowers, and even a large carrot. Clusters of green leaves are present around the base of its horn and the tip of its tail.

Overview

Befitting its appearance, the Leaf Turtle is a sturdy foe with a good amount of HP and higher-than-average Defence; on the other hand, its Evade is lower than most foes. As with all Turtles, it has a basic non-elemental horn attack and can stomp the ground to deal two hits of part-Earth damage to the entire active party; it rounds out its arsenal with some plant-based Bio skills, typically including Razor Leaf. It has recurring weaknesses to Fire, Ice, and especially Earth while absorbing Water and being highly resistant to Thunder and Wind.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

First seen about halfway through Vegetable Forest, the Leaf Eater is a bit tougher than most foes fought so far. It can stab a player with its horn or hit everyone at once with its Ground Pound; the latter is more accurate than normal and deals part-Earth damage, but this comes at the cost of lower overall power. Its strongest attack (and sole spell) is Razor Leaf, which hits the entire party multiple times for mostly Poison-based magical damage and a small chance of Poison status. This attack becomes much more dangerous on Epic difficulty due to a significantly higher Poison chance; combined with its multiple hits, the Leaf Eater can very easily saddle the party with lethal amounts of passive damage.

The Leaf Eater was intended to have a second multi-target Earth skill with even lower power than Ground Pound in exchange for greatly buffing its already high Defence, but a programming error prevents it from using it, Regardless, magic attacks are recommended to hit its lower defensive stat, although Matt can still deal a good amount of damage with the right elemental skills, especially Tremor or Quake. If encountered later in the game, Airstrike is probably the party's best option against it, especially considering its general usefulness in EBF3.

The party won't have a lot of options for mitigating the Leaf Eater's attacks when they first encounter it; purchasing some Garlic in The Town is recommended to handle Poison, as Purify won't be readily available. As such, it's best to simply kill it as quickly as possible, especially because it starts spamming Razor Leaf at low HP. If you have status effects to inflict against it, keep in mind that both Syphon and Berserk will lock it out of Razor Leaf (with the latter also preventing it from using Ground Pound), while Doom will make it use nothing but Razor Leaf until it dies.

Water, Thunder, and Wind are not recommended against a Leaf Eater; it absorbs the first element and is nearly immune to the other two. Fortunately, its weaknesses are readily accessible to the party: it's vulnerable to Fire and Bomb, even weaker to Ice, and especially vulnerable to Earth. When first encountered, Matt and Lance are best served by the Gaia Axe and the Heavy Claw, respectively; Natalie should use the Crystal Staff, since its higher Magic Attack gives Fire and Ice more punch. In terms of status effects and debuffs, it is very resistant to Accuracy drops and incredibly susceptible to Berserk.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Leaf Turtle is encountered much later than its EBF3 counterpart, but it retains its role as a bulky obstacle for the party to overcome in battle. Its Evade is low, but it compensates with above-average HP and Defence; it also has some proficiency in softening up the party for other foes with its multi-target attacks. The part-Earth Ground Pound has a chance to Stagger players, while the pure Bio-based Razor Leaf can inflict mild Poison; put together, the Leaf Turtle can open up players for more offensively inclined foes if left to its own devices.

If the Leaf Turtle briefly retreats into its shell, it'll increase its Defence and Magic Defence while giving itself a turn of Defend, allowing it to absorb a fair bit more damage; however, the buffs can be turned against it with Giga Drill, especially given its serious Earth weakness. Higher difficulty levels also allow this move to cast Ivy on a random player, which does decent part-Bio physical damage and has a better Poison chance than Razor Leaf.

If you're trying to outlast a Leaf Turtle, high Defence will be useful - this is especially true after the v2 update, which changed Razor Leaf's damage from magical to physical. Inflicting Berserk will force it to spam Ground Pound, which isn't especially strong even with the damage boost; it's also a bit inaccurate, so Evade-based strategies may be another option. Offensively speaking, inflicting Wet can further expose its Ice weakness; this is best done via Cloudburst or when the Leaf Turtle is still at full health in order to avoid healing it with most Wet-inducing skills.

The Leaf Turtle absorbs Water, is highly resistant to Thunder and Wind, and has medium resistances to Bomb, Stun, Doom, and Instant Death; on the other hand, it's weak to Bio, Fire, Ice, and especially Earth. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, it becomes neutral to Ice and Bio while gaining additional resistances to Weaken, Tired, and Curse.

Incidentally, the Leaf Turtle has the highest Turnip drop rate of any foe in EBF4, which can be useful if the player has yet to complete the relevant upgrades by then.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

  • Berserked → Horn Stab;
  • Syphoned → Horn Stab (1/2), Ground Pound (1/2);
  • <28.5% HP or/and Doomed → Razor Leaf;
  • Otherwise → Horn Stab (1/4), Ground Pound (1/4), Razor Leaf* (2/4).

The Shell Smash attack, although it exists, is never used; what could activate it triggers Razor Leaf instead, giving extra usage chance for the strongest attack.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • Syphoned → Horn Stab (1/3), Ground Pound (1/3), Shell Smash (1/3);
  • Berserked → Ground Pound;
  • Otherwise → Horn Stab (1/4), Ground Pound (1/4), Shell Smash (1/4), Razor Leaf (1/4).
