The Black Fang in EBF2 and EBF3

  • The Black Fang is a bio-elemental sword available for Matt in Epic Battle Fantasy 2, 3 and 5.

    Description

The Black Fang is a distinctive single-edged sword with a long brown hilt and a small red pommel. As its name suggests, its blade is black in color, with illegible runes engraved along its length near the base. The blade is mostly straight with a slight curve near the tip, but it has a few small spikes near the base. Its handguard is practically nonexistent, being a small red section with a tiny ring on one side.

In EBF2 and 3, the Black Fang has three equally-sized spikes at the base of its cutting edge and a slightly larger point on the opposite side. In EBF5, the spikes closest to the pommel were reduced in size, and the other two spikes became larger and bent downward to resemble fangs. Some brown string has been tied through the ring on the guard, adorned with a small red bead on either end.

The Black Fang generally has decent offensive stats and a boost to Accuracy and/or Evade, but its specialty is usually afflicting foes with Poison with weapon-elemental skills. Its most common resistances include Bio and Dark.

    Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Black Fang has a decent Defence boost and modest Attack, but its Accuracy and Evade are second only to the Swift Brand overall. Instead of empowering any of Matt's skills, it focuses on wearing foes down with Poison; its weapon-elemental skills have a high chance to apply a stack of the status, and its Unleash inflicts five stacks at once, allowing Matt to quickly build up a lot of damage over time to non-resistant foes.

Although its damage output (both direct and indirect) significantly eclipses that of the Blood Blade (its fellow Poison-elemental sword), the Black Fang isn't particularly notable outside of its ability to rapidly Poison foes; once that's taken care of, Matt should probably switch to a different weapon for better offense or defense as the situation requires.

    Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Black Fang grants a good amount of Attack and Magic Attack, along with the second-best Accuracy and Evade among swords (only surpassed by the Swift Brand). It emphasizes Poison damage by powering up Nettle and having a decent chance to inflict a light Poison status with weapon-elemental skills; it can also counter with a Normal Attack to Poison foes on their turn, and its Unleash inflicts an even greater amount of Poison on the target. With this weapon equipped, it won't take Matt long at all to stack massive amounts of Poison on his foes, allowing the party to focus on buffing and healing while the status does all the damage for them.

The Black Fang has a strong Poison resistance along with weaker resistances to Earth and Dark. None of these become an immunity at Level 5.

    Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Although the Black Fang has slightly below-average Attack and Magic Attack, it's tied with the Lightning Shard for the third-best Accuracy of any sword. It can inflict a sizable amount of Poison stacks and drain HP with weapon-elemental attacks; single-target skills of this nature also have a chance to unleash Overgrowth for further Poison chances on top of benefiting from the sword's Bio boost.

The Black Fang is quite effective for wearing down foes over time; thanks to its strong Bio resistance, it's particularly effective when supporting a Virus strategy. However, the Emerald Smasher is a better option for direct Bio damage, and its proficiency in Stagger effects allows it to set up damage combos with the party.

The Black Fang resists Bio, Dark, Bad Luck and Curse, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5.

The Alt Black Fang has slightly above-average Attack, Magic Attack, and Evade, along with an array of skills that encourage an offensive support role. It powers up Bio attacks and buff skills while increasing the chance of inflicting status effects, which works nicely with the Tired it can inflict with Weapon-elemental skills. Additionally, these skills have a high chance to apply a decent Accuracy debuff, making Tired even more of an issue for the affected foes. The sword can also summon a Panda Bear for added Bio damage and Poison support; although this is unreliable at best, it can take a fair chunk out of the victim, particularly if they're suffering from Tired.

Aside from its obvious use in physical buff builds and setting up allied Bio attacks, the Alt Black Fang is an interesting option for Evade-based parties; its on-hit effects can quickly cripple enemy Accuracy, and Slicing Cyclone lets Matt hit the whole wave at once. However, its reliance on those effects can limit its effectiveness against foes that resist Tired and/or Accuracy debuffs.

The Alt Black Fang resists Bio and Dark. Neither becomes an immunity at Level 5.

The Black Fang is found inside a chest in Rock Lake, specifically the bottom-right chest on the grassy island just before the sandy beach area. Access to the island is guarded by a battle that appears as a Blue Jelly, and a battle that appears as a Blue Slime is near the chest but does not have to be fought.

    Trivia

    • Although the Black Fang wouldn't become a usable sword until EBF2, it appears as one of the weapons summoned by Calamity. It also appears under the table of the first Shop screen (along with what seems to be a recolored Nirvana), although it's mostly obscured by the shopping interface.
    • Along with the Soul Eater, the Black Fang is one of only two EBF2 swords that doesn't boost any specific skills.
    • In EBF5, the Black Fang's HP-draining ability may be a reference to the signature ability of the Blood Blade, which didn't appear for the first time in the main series.
