The Panda Bear is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is generally found in the Mystic Woods, although a few can be fought in the northmost part of Greenwood Village.

Appearance

The Panda Bear somewhat resembles its real-world namesake, being a large bear with monochromatic fur. Its head and body are white, while its limbs and ears are black - unlike a real panda, it lacks dark patches over its eyes. It has a little green leaf on its head, matching the color of its eyes.

Overview

The Panda Bear is the laziest member of the Bear family, and will not attack the party until the first 1% of its health has been taken off. As such, the party can basically disregard the Panda Bear until they have their buffs in place, and can instead focus on the other foes in the wave. That said, if damaged by a random summon or from a multi-target attack (or if the party specifically has equipment that scares Beasts), the Panda Bear will still unleash its frenzy; Lance in particular may have trouble keeping it calm, since his main magic skills lose the ability to hit singular foes in their final forms.

The Panda Bear specializes in physical attacks, with all but two of them being at least partially Bio-based; however, some of them have very low elemental degrees. Its Body Slam has a decent Stun chance and its bamboo attacks can Poison their targets; the single-target Bamboo Trap is much more likely to do so. It also has a one-time Earth attack with a mild Virus risk on higher difficulty levels, and a rolling attack that hits backup players even harder than the front line. Like other Bears, it goes Berserk if it takes major damage; on Hard or Epic, this also buffs its Attack and Evade (although the latter is mitigated by a below-average Evade stat).

Overall, the Panda Bear is a surprisingly strong foe if dealt with carelessly; take advantage of its default passivity to buff the party and eliminate other foes before going after it. Poison resistance isn't too important, especially if you Syphon it; the status prevents it from using its bamboo attacks, giving it a fair chance to waste turns once it falls below 79% HP. Above that threshold, it can only use its basic non-elemental attack, which can be exploited by a Target Tank while the other players set up a big combo. If it goes Berserk, Ice attacks are recommended to calm it down while still dealing decent damage.

Panda Bears have a severe Fire weakness while resisting Dark, Holy, Water and Wind. They also are very resistant to Chill and Freeze, Stun, and Instant Death, and slightly resist Attack and Defense debuffs, but are very vulnerable to Stagger. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, their Dark and Holy resistances become an absorption, they become resistant to Bio and Earth, immune to Instant Death, and gain a slight resistance to Magic Attack and Magic Defense debuffs.

Panda Bears are notable for being the only foe to drop Bread, but the incredibly low drop rate makes it very tedious to farm. On the other hand, it is a reliable source of Leather and Fine Fur, like all Bears in EBF5.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • ≥99% HP and the players don't have any Beast scaring equipment → Nothing;
  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the Bear is not Berserked → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Roll;
  • If Enrage was triggered this turn;
    • If Dump was already used or if Mature is turned off → Body Slam (1/3);
      • If Syphoned → Nothing (2/3);
      • Otherwise → Bamboo (1/3), Bamboo Trap (1/3);
    • Otherwise → Dump;
  • <79% HP or when Berserked;
    • If Dump was already used or if Mature is turned off → Body Slam (4/15), Roll (3/15);
      • If Syphoned → Nothing (8/15);

The Bear will target the last player who attacked them with their attacks.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the Panda Bear will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action). This also makes them able to act even at full HP (it's specifically the equipment effect and not the Berserk that triggers this, thus inflicting Berserk through other non-damaging means will not cause them to act at ≥99% HP).

Summon

The Panda Bear can be captured and used as a summon; additionally, the Alt Black Fang has a chance to call it between turns. It casts a powered-up Bamboo Trap on all foes, hitting each of them six times. It deals physical Bio damage with high Accuracy and a mild chance of inflicting Poison.
