The Shooting Star is a non-elemental staff available for Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. In EBF4, it is exclusive to the Steam release of the game and the Premium Pack. In EBF5, it is currently exclusive to the paid Steam release of the game and the outdated free Battle Demo.

Description

The Shooting Star is a golden staff whose shaft becomes very crooked above the grip, topped with a head shaped like a large star with a small crescent moon beneath it. In EBF4, the center of the head has a star-shaped hole; the EBF5 version fills the center with a star-shaped fuchsia gem in addition to adding a smaller gem to the hooked pommel, making the staff itself a darker shade of gold, and giving the head a very slight glow effect.

Befitting its name and appearance, the Shooting Star empowers Natalie's non-elemental spells while giving her more opportunities to use them, usually with a Lucky Star unleash and the ability to cast Star Shower between turns. It also has strong Magic Attack and useful status resistances (including Syphon and Dispel); conversely, it never resists any elements.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Shooting Star provides a massive Magic Attack boost and two important status resistances, but no other stat bonuses. Its bonus skills - a Lucky Star unleash and random Star Showers cast between turns - can supplement any battle, dealing non-elemental damage to all enemies. Both skills get a boost from the staff, but the benefit can be hard to see with their incredibly random damage output.

The Shooting Star competes with the Crystal Staff as a generalized offensive staff; it has better power (due to higher Magic Attack and two bonus skills) and resists some dangerous statuses, but the Crystal Staff has an MP boost, an on-hit Dispel, and resistances to three common elements on top of being available much earlier. Ultimately, both are perfectly viable; the choice comes down to player preference.

The Shooting Star resists Syphon and Dispel, with both becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Normal

The Shooting Star boasts great Magic Attack (the second highest among staves) and solid Magic Defence. It sometimes unleashes Lucky Star with weapon-elemental attacks and casts Star Shower between turns, both of which benefit from its non-elemental boost. It also has a decent chance to give Natalie Good Luck between turns; when it's fully upgraded, the status will be nearly permanent.

While the Shooting Star has a good amount of generalist power, it's hampered by the inconsistent nature of Natalie's natural non-elemental spells; additionally, its damage can't be boosted by status effects or elemental weaknesses. On the other hand, its non-elemental nature means that it can't be weakened by certain status effects or enemy resistances, and its auto-status benefits the higher-than-average critical chance of Lucky Star and Star Shower. Later in the game, Natalie can also learn Geometry for a more consistent non-elemental spell, although it has a significant cooldown.

The Shooting Star faces stiff competition from the Paper Fan, which provides a more useful set of resistances and a chance of auto-Haste in exchange for some magic power and a slightly less accessible elemental boost. The Obsidian Staff is another threat to its niche, trading the Magic Defence for substantially higher offenses, a more useful elemental boost, and an effective support unleash. On the other hand, the Shooting Star is available sooner than either of its main competitors if the player is willing to spend some time searching the Mineshaft Maze; in comparison, the Paper Fan is guarded by the Sketch Boss Rush in Greenwood Library, and the Obsidian Staff is hidden behind a Diamond Block in the Forgotten Ruins.

The Shooting Star grants resistances to Syphon, Dispel, Disable, Death and Doom, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5.

Equip Remix

With the Alt Shooting Star in hand, Natalie can give her enemies a crash course in weaponized astronomy. It provides good Magic Attack and great Evade, as well as boosts to non-elemental and Dark skills. Both elements are easily accessible to Natalie (although her natural non-elemental spells are very inconsistent) and the staff itself provides further options; it counters attacks with Star Shower and randomly casts Pulsar between turns.

The Alt Shooting Star is effective at hitting entire waves of foes with strong magical damage; pairing it with the Alt Dark Gown gives Natalie massive Magic Attack on top of double-boosted non-elemental and Dark spells. However, it struggles to stand out among some of Natalie's other weapon options; for instance, the Alt Obsidian Staff is better for Dark damage while the Alt Dragon Wings have a wider (if less readily accessible) range of elemental boosts. Additionally, a few staves (such as the Alt Wrath of Zeus or the Alt Elder's Wisdom) have superior offensive power in exchange for various drawbacks.

The Alt Shooting Star resists Syphon, Dispel, Disable, Bad Luck and Curse. At Level 5, it is immune to all of them.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Shooting Star is found in a chest one screen to the right from the Battle Mountain entrance, behind a battle that appears as a Cosmic Monolith. Thermal Boots are required to get there. Prior to the v3 update, it was located in the same screen, but instead obtained by examining the big red crystal.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Shooting Star is found inside a chest in a dead end of the Mineshaft Maze. The chest can be reached from one of two routes starting from the entrance screen:

1. Go right, up, right twice, down, right, then up.
2. Go down, right three times, up, right, then up.
