The Paper Fan is a Wind-elemental staff available for Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description

The Paper Fan is a classic Japanese folding fan made of paper on a bamboo frame. It is usually white, with the word "MEOW" and a simplified cat face printed on it in blue, but its design changes when equipped along with certain armors:

• The Summer Kimono uses a red Paper Fan with a pale yellow flower graphic.
• The Ninja Skirt uses a black Paper Fan with white trim.
• The Bubble Dress uses a royal blue Paper Fan with light blue trim.

Normal

The Paper Fan is a potent magical weapon with a great Magic Attack bonus (fourth-highest of any staff) and a minor Evade increase; its huge Attack penalty is irrelevant, as Natalie has no physical skills besides her Normal Attack. It can unleash Whirlwind with weapon-elemental skills, giving it a way to exploit its Wind boost; although this isn't very relevant most of the time, the skill can sometimes make the target Light, giving it support potential for allied Wind attacks. Its most interesting and powerful effect is its ability to occasionally grant the coveted Haste status, letting Natalie act twice in one turn.

While certainly useful for a general offensive build, the Paper Fan is held back by the inconsistent trigger chance on its auto-status and Natalie's relative lack of access to Wind skills outside of its unleash. The Obsidian Staff is better for pure offensive purposes; not only is it more powerful, it has better synergy with both Natalie and Lance's skillsets due to its Dark boost and its ability to apply Dry and Invisible with a single Normal Attack. Prior to the Obsidian Staff's acquisition, it also has to compete with the Shooting Star, which has higher Magic Attack, a more exploitable elemental boost, and a slightly more reliable (if less immediately powerful) auto-status; to top it off, it's available slightly earlier than the Paper Fan if the player explores the Mineshaft Maze as soon as possible.

The Paper Fan provides resistances to Bomb, Holy and Wind. None of these become an immunity at Level 5.

Equip Remix

In a rather drastic shift from its normal counterpart, the Alt Paper Fan is a pure support weapon. It has a minor HP bonus and pitiful offensive boosts - its Magic Attack is the lowest of any staff that doesn't outright reduce the stat - but it also grants an enormous amount of Evade, being more than twice that of its closest competitors (the Alt Knife and the Alt Shooting Star). It can steal items with a Normal Attack and summon an Origami Wraith between turns (applying some non-elemental damage and Dispel to a random foe), but its main asset is its ability to increase the power of both buffs and debuffs, both of which are useful for its wielder.

The Alt Paper Fan is a fine option for Natalie's hybrid buff/debuff build, although it has to compete with the Alt Alchemy Set in this regard. Its main advantage is its massive Evade, which gives it better synergy with the Alt Casual Skirt; the Alt Curly Horns provide a third buff/debuff boost and some decent bulk.

The Alt Paper Fan resists Stun, Stagger, Confuse, Disable, and Syphon, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Paper Fan is found inside a chest in the Greenwood Library's central room; the player must defeat the Sketch Boss Rush to access it. Prior to the v2 update, it was found inside a chest behind a Copper Block inside Anna's House in Greenwood Village.
