Leafy Chomper

The Leafy Chomper is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It first appears in the Wild Tropics, but goes on to appear in various parts of the map such as Rainbow River and Mystic Woods.

Appearance

The Leafy Chomper is a monstrous plant-like creature with a body formed from an olive green vine with light green speckles and bright green leaves along its length. More leaves sprout around the base of its enormous pale green mouth, which is filled with yellowish fangs and red fluid that seems to be dripping from its upper jaw into its lower jaw. It has a single green eye at the tip of its vine.

Overview

The Leafy Chomper is a pesky mid-tier foe, with several moderately powerful, mostly physical skills with good Poison chances. Since it can wear down the party's health with relative ease, Bio-resistant gear is recommended, especially if the battle is expected to be very lengthy. While its ability to buff the Magic Attack of the entire enemy wave does little for itself (only empowering Toxic), it can make other foes significantly more dangerous. On higher difficulty levels, it enters battle with three Poison stacks, allowing it to passively restore its HP for a few turns.

What distinguishes the Leafy Chomper from its brethren is its ability to act as a healer. Aside from the usual Chomper ability to heal itself by biting a player (which also deals a fair amount of damage), it can heal and Bless an ally with Refresh. While it is unlikely that Bless will cause much of an issue, it will make foes harder to capture. Incidentally, Leafy Chompers can only use Refresh once they reach Level 11, preventing them from using the skill when encountered in the Wild Tropics (unless playing a New Game Plus).

Despite its potent offenses and healing abilities (including the ability to absorb both Bio and Water damage), a Leafy Chomper has several elemental weaknesses. Fire works best, but Ice, Earth, and Wind attacks can all cut through its HP in short order, especially since its mediocre Evade makes it harder to dodge attacks. As a mid-tier foe, it resists Stun, Chill, Freeze, and especially Doom and Instant Death; inflicting Poison and Virus is also ill-advised, since they'll just heal it. Additionally, it has significant resistance to Attack and Defence drops, so targeting its Magic Defence for debuffing will have a greater effect.

If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, the Leafy Chomper loses its Ice and Wind weaknesses and gains further resistance to Attack and Defence debuffs.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned → Chomp (1/2), Poison Root (1/2);
  • If Berserked;
    • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable;
      • If the most damaged foe is <49% HP and the Leafy Chomper is at least level 11 → Refresh (1/3), Razor Leaf (2/3);
      • Otherwise → Razor Leaf;
    • Otherwise → Poison Root;
  • Otherwise;
    • If a randomly selected foe has at least a 10% Magic Attack buff;
      • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable;
        • If the most damaged foe is <49% HP and the Leafy Chomper is at least level 11 → Refresh (1/3), Razor Leaf (2/3);
        • Otherwise → Razor Leaf;
      • Otherwise → Chomp (1/4), Poison Root (1/4);
        • If the most damaged foe is <49% HP and the Leafy Chomper is at least level 11 → Refresh (1/6), Toxic (1/6), Razor Leaf (1/6);
        • Otherwise → Toxic (1/4), Razor Leaf (1/4);
    • Otherwise → Buff (1/5);
      • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable;
        • If the most damaged foe is <49% HP and the Leafy Chomper is at least level 11 → Refresh (4/15), Razor Leaf (8/15);
        • Otherwise → Razor Leaf (4/5);
      • Otherwise → Chomp (1/5), Poison Root (1/5);
        • If the most damaged foe is <49% HP and the Leafy Chomper is at least level 11 → Refresh (2/15), Toxic (2/15), Razor Leaf (2/15);
        • Otherwise → Toxic (1/5), Razor Leaf (1/5).

* Refresh will always target the most damaged foe.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Poison Root.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Trees, the Leafy Chomper will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

The Leafy Chomper can be captured and used as a summon. It is the only way for the party to manually induce the Breezy weather condition.

Trivia

  • The Leafy Chomper somewhat resembles the Pokémon Carnivine.
  • The Leafy Chomper is one of the only foes in the series who has one of its skills (in this case, Refresh) "locked" until it reaches a certain level. While several other foes have attacks they can't use in certain conditions, these are usually difficulty-dependent or simply rendered inaccessible by coding errors.
