Marble Boulder

The Marble Boulder is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is mainly found in the Forgotten Ruins, although a few also live in the caves beneath Hope Harbor.

Appearance

The Marble Boulder, as the name implies, is a stout being made of off-white marble, with relatively large arms and short legs. It has amethysts forming its eyes and mouth, and its forehead resembles the base of a pillar. Its shoulders and arms have projections made of dark brown stone.

Like all Boulders, the Marble Boulder can use a thematic boulder to attack players; in its case, a large white marble cat head with a coin chiseled onto its forehead. The head is missing a large chunk of its left side, including the round amethyst gem serving as its eye; the right side is relatively pristine in contrast, only having a few cracks on the bottom.

Overview

The Marble Boulder uses non-elemental or partly Wind-elemental attacks that tend to inflict Stagger, Disable, and Syphon (even more so on Hard or Epic difficulty). Most of its attacks are physical, but two of its boulder attacks inflict magic damage; one hits the entire front line for minor damage, and the other hits randomly for significant damage. Its third boulder attack hits a single player before bouncing into the backup characters, so try to keep everyone at a decent HP level.

Like the rest of its family, the Marble Boulder's moves can be easily controlled by inflicting Berserk or Syphon; the former limits it to its boulder attacks, while the latter locks it out of the same. It has above-average Magic Defence, so physical attacks will be more effective against it; hitting it shouldn't be difficult, given its mediocre Evade.

The Marble Boulder is weak to Bomb and especially Dark, but it absorbs Holy and resists all other elements. On the other hand, its status resistances are limited to an immunity to Poison and Virus, as well as a significant resistance to Stun, Doom, and Instant Death; it also has no resistances to stat debuffs. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, it becomes resistant to Bomb and defensive debuffs.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Marble Roll (1/3), Marble Bowling (1/3), Marble Bounce (1/3);
  • If Syphoned → Arm Swinging (1/2), Bump (1/2);
  • If Berserked → Marble Roll (1/3), Marble Bowling (1/3), Marble Bounce (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Arm Swinging (1/6), Bump (1/6), Zephyr Crystals (1/6), Marble Roll (1/6), Marble Bowling (1/6), Marble Bounce (1/6).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% and not Syphoned → Zephyr Crystals.

Summon

The Marble Boulder can be captured and used as a summon. It uses a powered-up version of Marble Roll to attack all enemies at once, dealing mild magical Wind damage with a very high chance to Syphon them for three turns. It's guaranteed to Syphon any foe with 50% or less resistance to the status (which includes Monoliths), making it an effective option to shut down multiple magically-inclined foes at once. However, the Master Wraith summon is more effective for singular Syphon-resistant targets due to a lower SP cost, a stronger Syphon effect, and an even higher status chance.
