―Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Burned Fallen is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It can be found around the Lava Lake and other parts of The Rapture.

Appearance

The Burned Fallen is a spirit inhabiting a sandy brown cloak with dark brown details and reddish-brown pieces of armor over the head and (invisible) arms. Unlike the other Fallen, it lacks visible eyes, as its face is completely hidden by its visor. It wields a sword with fiery orange energy forming a sleek, katana-like blade.

Overview

As its name suggests, the Burned Fallen mainly uses pure Fire attacks; most are physical and single-target, but it also has Flame Burst for multi-target magical damage and Bullet Bob to inflict physical Bomb damage. Some of its moves inflict Defence debuffs, Burn, and (on higher difficulties) Dry attacks; coupled with its tendency to aim for players with the least amount of Fire resistance, it can amplify its own damage output quite effectively.

The Burned Fallen can also take a support role with its time magic; Slow Down is guaranteed to Stun its victim if they lack resistance, while Speed Up essentially lets the Burned Fallen give its turn to another foe (via applying Haste). Additionally, it can buff itself with Brave and Charge, heralding a slightly stronger dash attack that hits everyone; both parts of this combo also Burn it on higher difficulties, acting as free Regen due to its Fire absorption.

Fortunately, the Burned Fallen suffers from the same tactical weaknesses as the rest of its family. It can only use its basic physical attacks if afflicted with Syphon or Berserk, effectively nullifying its threat if the whole party has sufficient Fire resistance. It can also be intimidated by ghost-scaring equipment; depending on its HP, this can make it go Berserk or flee entirely.

The Burned Fallen absorbs Fire, Dark, and (to a lesser degree) Bomb while resisting Ice and being immune to Thunder, Bad Luck, Curse, Tired, Weaken, Doom, and Instant Death; however, it is weak to Holy and especially Water. If "More Foe Resistance" is on, it becomes immune to Ice, Holy, and Bio while slightly resisting Attack, Defence, and Accuracy debuffs.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked, catchscore >55, and all players are Lovable → Flee;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Double Hit (1/2), Fiery Sword Throw (1/2);
  • If Charged → Fiery Thrust;
  • If catchscore >55 and all players are Lovable → Buff;
  • If at least 2 active players resist Fire → Fiery Sword Throw (1/5), Buff (1/5);
    • If all active players resist Bomb → Slow Down (3/10), Speed Up (3/10);
    • Otherwise → Bullet Bob (6/40), Slow Down (9/40), Speed Up (9/40);
  • Otherwise → Double Hit (1/5), Fiery Sword Throw (1/5), Buff (1/5);
    • If all active players resist Bomb → Flame Burst (2/15), Slow Down (2/15), Speed Up (2/15);
    • Otherwise → Flame Burst (1/10), Bullet Bob (1/10), Slow Down (1/10), Speed Up (1/10);

* Fiery Sword Throw and Double Hit will prioritize targets that aren't resistant to Fire.

Before the v2 update, it incorrectly checked for player party Bomb resistance instead of Fire resistance when choosing whether to use its Double Hit attack.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Double Hit.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Ghosts, the Burned Fallen will immediately Surrender and Flee on their turn if <49% HP, or inflict 1x Berserk on themselves otherwise (the latter does not take up their action).

Summon

The Burned Fallen can be captured and used as a summon. It uses its Fiery Thrust to hit all foes for mild physical Fire damage and a few stacks of Dry, but it is more notable for changing the weather to Sandstorm for five turns.

Trivia

  • Matt's line upon killing the party's first Burned Fallen is a direct reference to Iron Man, a popular superhero made by Marvel Comics.
