"IS IT A CYBORG?! Who built such a thing?"
―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The War Mammoth is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. They are sparsely spread across the map, largely in Frozen Valley and The Rapture, but one also appears in the Iron Fortress. It is a member of the Mammoths enemy group.

Appearance

The War Mammoth looks similar to the Wooly Mammoth, but with black fur and smaller, conical ears. It is outfitted with steel-gray armor on its ankles, tusks, and head, with the ankle armor having brown bands on the bottom edge and the tusk armor being lined with spikes on one side. A metal cannon is mounted on its back, secured with a metal band and leather straps. A circular piece of metal is attached to the side of the band, and a brown tarp with a spiked diamond sigil is laid across its hindquarters.

Based on some of the party's comments and its own animations, the War Mammoth may have cybernetic components within its body.

Overview

As its bestiary entry states, the War Mammoth is a living tank that can give and receive substantial amounts of damage. It uses a mixture of physical attacks and magical Bomb attacks fired from its back-mounted cannon and (somehow) its trunk. Some of its skills have a chance to Stagger the party, which can increase the damage output of the Mammoth and its allies; on the flip side, it can Dispel the party's buffs with a mighty trumpet.

On Hard or Epic difficulties, the War Mammoth can cast Quake or Sawblade on a random party member after using its Ground Pound attack; the latter is especially dangerous due to a small chance of Instant Death. It also has a chance to revive with a fraction of maximum health when killed, unless it has been afflicted with Tired or Weaken by the time it dies. It also can inflict Hungry on the players when it dies for real, but neither of these can occur if the War Mammoth is captured.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Ground Pound;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Ground Pound (1/3), Trumpet (1/3), Big Blast (1/3);
  • If Syphoned → Tusk Strike;
  • If Berserked → Ground Pound;
  • <32% HP → Tusk Strike (1/4), Big Blast (1/4);
    • If for any active player [sum of buffs - sum of debuffs] ≥ 70% → Ground Pound (1/4), Trumpet (1/4);
    • Otherwise → Ground Pound (2/4);
  • <65% HP → Tusk Strike (2/8), Triple Trunk Shoot (1/8), Big Blast (1/8);
    • If for any active player [sum of buffs - sum of debuffs] ≥ 70% → Ground Pound (1/4), Trumpet (1/4);
    • Otherwise → Ground Pound (2/4);
  • Otherwise → Tusk Strike (1/4), Triple Trunk Shot (1/4);
    • If for any active player [sum of buffs - sum of debuffs] ≥ 70% → Ground Pound (1/4), Trumpet (1/4);
    • Otherwise → Ground Pound (2/4).

*Ground Pound will immediately be followed by either Quake or Sawblade (same 1/2 chance for each) on Hard and Epic difficulties (except when catch score >55 and all players are Lovable or the Mammoth is Syphoned).

Before the v2 update, the War Mammoth could use Trumpet and Big Blast when Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Tusk Strike (1/2), Ground Pound (1/2).

*Ground Pound will immediately be followed by either Quake or Sawblade (same 1/2 chance for each) on Hard/Epic, unless catch score >55 and all players are Lovable, or the Mammoth is Syphoned.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the War Mammoth will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Can Revive on the first and second deaths on Hard and Epic difficulties if not inflicted with Weaken or Tired;
uses Make Hungry on final death.

Summon

The foe can be captured to be used as a summon, or be randomly summoned by the Blue Elephant (female hat) and the Alt Iron Tusk (bow). When called upon, the War Mammoth uses its Trumpet to buff the players' Defence before casting Big Blast twice.

While the War Mammoth can deal good damage while simultaneously buffing the party and potentially staggering foes, its high SP cost and middling buff strength reduce its usefulness. If the player needs an emergency Defence buff, the Topaz Ore summon tends to be more practical.
