The Turtle Shell is a Water-elemental cat toy available for NoLegs in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description

The Turtle Shell set is composed of a small sword fish and a turtle shell, both of which are still dripping with water. The fish is grey with a lighter grey underbelly and a single black eye. The turtle shell has a tan rim and its back changes color depending on what armor NoLegs has equipped. The most common color is green, but it becomes red with the Coat of Teeth, Hobo Clothes, Ninja Gear, Priest's Tunic, Santa Outfit, Shell Armor, Space Ace, or Spartan Cuirass; on the other hand, wearing the Captain's Coat or Wizard Robe turns the shell blue.

Normal

The Turtle Shell has great Attack, a bit of HP, and a sizable boost to both defenses, enabling NoLegs to both take and deal a good amount of damage. Its Water boost is quite exploitable, but it also benefits the Torrent occasionally unleashed by its weapon-elemental attacks. It also empowers Food, allowing NoLegs to provide some support if necessary; however, it's better for a pure offensive build, especially since Torrent is an unreliable source of Wet.

Although its Attack isn't the highest among cat toys, the Turtle Shell is tied with the Pixel Popper as the physically strongest cat toy without penalties; in contrast, the Devil's Sunrise and the Honjo Masamune lower some of NoLegs's stats, the Viking Buckler has a restrictive auto-Berserk effect, and the Star Hammer is only available near the end of the game. It can be considered a more straightforward version of the Bandit Blade, replacing Evade and auto-Haste with better Attack, bulk, and an item boost; it also performs similarly to the Steel Buckler. trading Magic Attack, a bit of bulk, and the Blade Blitz counter for more Attack, a decent unleash, and better skill boosts. Unfortunately, its viability is hampered by its late availability and superior alternatives for both of its main niches.

As with most offensive cat toys, the Turtle Shell is completely outclassed by the Honjo Masamune; to put it in perspective, a maxed-out Turtle Shell hits an effective power of 134% when using Water skills (1.8 * 1.3 = 2.34), while the Honjo Masamune has a base power of 150% on all skills (2.5 without any multipliers), and its HP penalty is not a big deal for NoLegs. Conversely, the Turtle Shell's support abilities are eclipsed by the Dog Sausage, which improves buffing skills along with Food. Additionally, the Honjo Masamune and the Dog Sausage both have good Evade to supplement NoLegs's best defensive asset, whereas the Turtle Shell can only mitigate his poor bulk.

The Turtle Shell provides resistances to Fire, Water, Dry and Wet. It becomes immune to the latter two at Level 5.

Equip Remix

The Alt Turtle Shell has respectable offenses (slightly favoring Attack over Magic Attack) and a Green Creep auto-summon, but its main role is to help NoLegs as tough (and ponderous) as Matt. It has good Defence and a gigantic HP boost; coupled with a chance to give Defend between turns, it makes NoLegs surprisingly durable. However, this comes at the cost of crippled Evade, essentially giving NoLegs the base defensive stats of Matt; as such, a defensive Matt build will usually prove more efficient for tanking.

The Alt Turtle Shell is the opposite of the Alt Honjo Masamune; it greatly reduces NoLegs's ability to dodge in exchange for good durability. In this role, it faces stiff competition from the Alt Leaf Shield, which has better Evade and defenses along with an array of utility summons. In contrast, the Alt Turtle Shell has superior HP, functional offenses, and auto-Defend to somewhat compensate for its lower Defence and lack of Magic Defence.

The Alt Turtle Shell resists Water, Ice, Dry and Wet, becoming immune to the latter two at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Turtle Shell is found at the end of a rainbow in the Rainbow River, one screen north of the Redpine Town Steroid Shop. A Stone Head must be on the altar to make the rainbow appear.

Trivia

  • The Turtle Shell has several references to the Mario Kart series of video games. Aside from the obvious reference in its item description:
    • The Turtle Shell's item boost may be a reference to Mario Kart allowing racers to use items to help themselves or hinder their opponents. The shells of Koopa Troopas (the Mario universe's equivalent to turtles) are a common projectile for the latter purpose.
    • Like the turtle-based Creeps, the Turtle Shell's potential colors reference the types of shells that can be used as items in Mario Kart. Coincidentally, the rarity of the colors (11 armors for green, 9 for red, and 2 for blue) corresponds to the rarity of the different shells.
    • Finally, the fact that the Turtle Shell is found at the end of a rainbow references Rainbow Road, a recurring course that has appeared in almost all Mario Kart games as the last and most difficult track.
