Captain's Coat

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki

The Captain's Coat, known as the Captain's Shirt in EBF4 and the Pirate Gear in EBF3, is a recurring piece of male armor in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It is Matt's iconic outfit, worn in every game appearance; it's almost always his default clothing, except for EBF5 where he instead dons the Hobo Clothes. Its hat counterpart is the Captain's Hat and its female equipment counterparts (only in EBF4) are the Pirate Dress and the Pirate Hat.

Description

The Captain's Coat has changed drastically in each of its appearances, right down to its name:

  • In EBF3, the Pirate Gear is a set of predominantly black-colored clothes. The pants have a large patch on each knee; the left is dull red and the right is dull green. The shirt has a stylized white skull on the chest, and the jacket has two golden buttons at the end of each sleeve. A few small silver chains hang from the waistband of the pants, near the wearer's right hip. A dark red bandana is worn around the neck, its ragged ends trailing behind the wearer's back.
  • In EBF4, the Captain's Shirt is a plain blue shirt worn with nondescript black pants held up by a small brown belt with a golden buckle. Its jacket is black with small orange triangles lining the hem and cuffs; a red zigzag crosses the sleeves and jacket just above the triangles. Its bandana is similar to the EBF3 Pirate Gear's, but a slightly brighter shade of red.
  • In EBF5, the Captain's Coat is a marine blue jacket with thin white trim around the hem and a gray interior visible on the lapel and upturned cuffs. It is held shut by small white buttons and a thick black belt with a silver buckle wrapped around the wearer's midsection. A short, curved knife is held in a black sheath attached to the back of the belt. The outfit also comes with a dark green button-up shirt, with what appear to be frilly white cuffs barely visible beneath the cuffs of the coat. Additionally, Matt and Lance get black shoes and black pants with upturned cuffs, revealing a strange "square zigzag" pattern of white and dark green along the inside; Matt also has a small silver plate on the jacket's left shoulder.

In all of its appearances, the Captain's Coat has been a fairly balanced armor, with decent (if sub-par) defenses paired with small boosts to Evade and offensive stats. It has consistently resisted Water, and often resists Bomb.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Pirate Gear has well-rounded stats, providing moderate boosts to Defence, Magic Defence, and Attack. It also offers small Accuracy and Evade bonuses, and is one of three pieces of male armor to boost HP. When fully upgraded, it can summon a Narwhal to skewer a random foe, dealing part-Water physical damage with a high critical hit chance. As Berserk also boosts auto-cast skills in EBF3, this armor can be combined with the Viking Helmet to automatically deal ludicrous damage, especially to Water-weak foes.

The Pirate Gear has identical defenses to the Casual Shirt and the Army Jacket (as well as HP in the latter case) in addition to some other stat bonuses, but its auto-skill is less versatile than the former's item boost and the latter's Airstrike. Outside of its use in a Berserker build, it's largely outclassed by the Leather Armor, which has all-around better stats and more generally useful resistances.

The Pirate Gear significantly resists Water, up to 80% at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Although the Captain's Shirt has slightly below-average Defence and Magic Defence, it also grants small bonuses to Attack, Magic Attack, and Evade. This makes it a fairly well-balanced armor, but a lack of special effects puts it at a disadvantage against other armors when it can't make use of its elemental resistances.

The Captain's Shirt resists Water and Bomb, both of which max out at 50% when the armor is fully forged.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Captain's Coat's stats are balanced but not particularly noteworthy; decent Defence and Magic Defence backing small boosts to Attack, Magic Attack, and Evade. It can randomly summon a Pink Squid between turns to hit a foe with strong Dark magic that also makes them Invisible while crippling their Accuracy; however, this is highly unreliable. Its more important effects are its boost to Water skills and its ability to increase its wearer's chances of inflicting status effects.

Aside from being a vital piece of status builds, the Captain's Coat works well for a Water-focused offensive build - this is especially useful for Matt and NoLegs, who have natural Water skills for it to boost. However, the Flame Suit has similar effects on top of a buff boost, better defenses, and earlier availability; on the other hand, it lacks the dual elemental resistances and offensive boost of Captain's Coat.

The Captain's Coat resists Water and Bomb, neither of which becomes an immunity at Level 5.

Equip Remix

The Alt Captain's Coat has mediocre Defence and Magic Defence, only being ahead of the Alt Ninja Gear in these stats. On the other hand, it offers small bonuses to Attack and Magic Attack, along with a pinch of Accuracy and Evade. It boosts two elements - Water and Bomb - as well as improving healing and buff items.

The elemental boosts of the Alt Captain's Coat stack well with those of the Alt Deep Blue for physical Lance builds, but other offensively-inclined armors may prove more powerful otherwise. For example, the Alt Officer's Coat and the Alt Scottish Kilt have slightly better offenses and defenses (as well as superior Accuracy in the latter's case) in exchange for losing the minor Evade boost, the item boost, and only empowering one element.

The Alt Captain's Coat resists Water and Dark, but neither becomes an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Captain's Coat is found inside a chest in Rainbow River by the gate to Frozen Valley. The chest is on the pier to the left of the pedestals where the Stone Heads must be placed, and is guarded by a battle that appears as a Hermit Creep.
