The Thunder Core is a Thunder-elemental gun available for Lance in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5.

Description

The Thunder Core is a strange-looking gun with mostly curved design elements. Its body is predominantly black and grey, with pale gold details on the barrel, stock, trigger, and grips. It has two small circular discs on its sides and a pair of glass capsules on its back - a cylindrical one near the barrel, and a large sphere on the back of the stock. When active, electricity crackles through both capsules.

The Thunder Core's design barely changed in EBF5, but the discs on its sides gained prominent indentations and its glass capsules became completely transparent instead of slightly gold-tinted. It also changes Lance's revolver by adding a pale gold color to the cylinder and most of the frame.

The Thunder Core is a Thunder-resistant, magically offensive weapon which has remained fairly consistent in terms of the stat boosts and bonus abilities it provides; that said, its usefulness varies depending on what other guns are present. It always boosts Magic Attack, Attack and MP (until the latter's removal from EBF5), and is capable of countering attacks with Plasma Shot, dealing a small amount of additional damage and potentially debuffing the target's Evade.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Thunder Core provides decent Attack and great Magic Attack; the latter is tied with the Shadow Blaster and the Red Vulcan for the second-highest Magic Attack of any gun (only the Steel Shark has more Magic Attack). It also provides a huge MP boost (again, only second to the Steel Shark), allowing Lance to fire off his powerful magic attacks for a long period of time. To top it off, it is capable of Stunning foes with its Unleash and firing Plasma Shot as both a bonus skill and a counterattack; the latter remains fairly weak, but still benefits from the gun's elemental boost.

While the Thunder Core is an interesting weapon that turns Plasmacross into one of Lance's strongest attack options, it can't quite match up to the Steel Shark and the Shadow Blaster for the endgame. The Steel Shark's higher Magic Attack benefits Airstrike, which tends to be a more effective skill than Plasmascross; on the other hand, the plethora of Dark-based foes in the final areas means that the Shadow Blaster's resistances will be the most useful. It's about tied with the Red Vulcan for the final areas, being able to hit more foes effectively (especially the Beholders) while having less useful resistances.

The Thunder Core resists Thunder and is weak to Earth. Its resistance does not become an immunity when fully upgraded, but its weakness remains the same no matter what its forging level is.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Thunder Core has good Magic Attack and only slightly weaker Attack, as well as a nice boost to MP (tied with the Sub Zero and only surpassed by the Ultra Zapper). It can inflict Stun and cast Blue Bolt with its weapon-elemental attacks, but the Stun chance is fairly low. While it has some support utility with its Stuns and its Evade-debuffing Plasma Shot counter, its main focus should be on inflicting magical damage. It has stiff competition from Lance's other guns, but remains a solid choice, especially if it can put its resistances to use.

The Thunder Core resists Thunder and Stun, with the latter becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Normal

The Thunder Core has poor Attack but solid Magic Attack. It counters attacks with Plasma Shot (which benefits from its elemental boost) and enables Lance to occasionally Stun foes with his weapon-elemental skills, but its most notable feature is its ability to give Lance Charge status between turns. While unreliable at best, this trait lets Lance fire Hyper Beam more easily, inflicting hefty damage with a chance of Stunning the entire enemy wave - status infliction gear is highly recommended to make this more consistent. However, Neon Lightbulb NoLegs and Thor's Hammer Anna are typically better for Stun-locking status builds.

In comparison to the Heartstopper, the Thunder Core is more magically-inclined and provides more immediately useful bonuses and debuffs, but it lacks defensive bonuses, has a lower infliction chance for its on-hit status, and does less damage with its counter attack. It can also be considered a Thunder-based counterpart to the Sub Zero, with identical Magic Attack, auto-Charge, and a low chance to immobilize foes with weapon-elemental skills; its other stats are less impressive and it lacks an unleash, but it has better synergy with Lance's natural skills and is marginally better at keeping foes immobilized (due to Stun persisting if the victim is attacked).

The Thunder Core resists Thunder, Stun, Syphon and Disable. It becomes immune to all except Thunder at Level 5.

When Lance brings the Alt Thunder Core into battle, the foes had best prepare for stormy conditions, because this gun boosts both Thunder and Wind skills. Although Lance will need shared skills to take advantage of the Wind boost (with both Power Metal and Shockwave being viable options), the Thunder boost complements his natural skills in addition to providing its own electrical attacks; it can occasionally summon a Defender Mk III between turns and unleash a Thunder Storm with Lance's weapon-elemental skills. Unfortunately, neither skill has a particularly high chance of triggering, but the Alt Thunder Core also has a good Stun chance to stop foes in their tracks for a turn.

In terms of its stats, the Alt Thunder Core has good Magic Attack and a bit of Magic Defence, but it offers the lowest Attack boost of any Alt gun (only ahead of guns that don't raise Attack at all). This means that Lance should mostly use his spells in battle, but his physical attacks (especially Double Shot) remain useful for Stunning individual foes. If he has a chance to Charge a Hyper Beam. he can deal solid damage and Stun all non-resistant foes even without a status boost; with status-boosting equipment, he's guaranteed to paralyze anything with up to 70% resistance.

While its offensive output (physical and magical) and Thunder resistance are utterly eclipsed by the Alt Heartstopper, the Alt Thunder Core is also much safer to wield; it lacks the HP penalty, self-inflicted Doom, and hideous Death vulnerability. On the other hand, the Alt Shadow Blaster has superior stats (aside from the incidental Attack boost), an identical Thunder resistance, and even more synergy with Lance's natural skills on top of some support potential for a magic-focused party.

The Alt Thunder Core resists Thunder, Bomb, and Stun, with the latter becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Thunder Core is found in the Kitten Kingdom Ruins, inside a chest in the leftmost tomb (the one with a statue of Meow Meow above the exit to the preceding screen). The chest is at the back of the room, to the immediate left of a battle that appears as an Ancient Monolith.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Thunder Core is found inside a chest on the southern bank of the Rainbow River, one screen south of the No Man's Land Slime Cat and one screen north of Redpine Town's Material Shop and Stable. The chest is hidden behind some trees to the right of a monolith and guarded by a battle that appears as a Red Bush (also nearly obscured by trees); The Raft will be needed to reach this area.
