The Sub Zero is an ice-elemental gun available for Lance in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5.
Description
The Sub Zero is a large grey and dull blue cannon with what appear to be vents or spikes on its base and along the sides of its barrel. Several small ice crystals line the back of the gun and the lower edge of the barrel, and a larger spike of ice adorns the top of the gun like a bayonet or laser sight. A tube or wire connects to the back of the large spike, presumably holding it in place.
In EBF5, the Sub Zero's ice crystals were repositioned slightly and the vent along its barrel was reduced in size. It also comes with a silver revolver with a dull blue frame and small blue ice crystals above and below the barrel.
The Sub Zero is generally an average offensive gun with a great Magic Defence boost and the ability to Freeze enemies with its weapon-elemental skills. It can also unleash an Ice skill to help Lance exploit its elemental boost, as well as increasing his resistance to Ice and Water, among others.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4
The Sub Zero provides solid boosts to Magic Attack and Attack, but also boasts the best Magic Defence of any gun, as well as the second-best MP (tied with the Thunder Core). It can inflict Freeze with weapon-elemental skills, though the base chance is as slim as you'd expect for such a powerful status. However, single-target weapon-elemental skills also have a chance to cast Deep Freeze, which deals significant damage that benefits from the Sub Zero's elemental boost and carries a much higher Freeze chance.
The Sub Zero is best used for its Freezing capabilities, as Lance has few options to exploit its Ice boost otherwise. The only Ice skills he can learn are Icicles and Blizzard, one of which is unreliable and the other being locked until Battle Mountain. As with all Ice/Freeze strategies, Wet support is useful to increase its effectiveness.
The Sub Zero resists Ice, Water and Burn, becoming immune to the latter at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 5
Normal
The Sub Zero has great Magic Defence by weapon standards, being tied with the Desert Scorpion for the best of any gun. It also has average boosts to Magic Attack and Attack, and its weapon-elemental skills can occasionally Freeze enemies or cast Iceberg as a follow-up; the latter benefits from the gun's innate Ice boost and has a chance to Chill the victim, setting up further Freeze combos.
The Sub Zero can also grant Charge status between turns, allowing Lance to immediately fire an Ice-imbued Hyper Beam with an improved Freeze chance. With Chill or Wet support and gear that increases the chances of status infliction, Lance will have a decent chance of Freezing most or even all of the enemy wave unless they're resistant to the status or wiped out by the actual attack. Unfortunately, the Charge is sporadic enough to make this strategy somewhat inconsistent without additional Haste support; NoLegs and the Book of Spells provide a more reliable source of multi-target Freeze.
The Sub Zero resists Ice, Water, Burn, and Scorch, becoming immune to the latter two at Level 5.
Equip Remix
The Alt Sub Zero grants a good amount of Magic Defence and acceptable offenses, but its real value comes from its ability to Freeze enemies in their tracks. Lance's weapon-elemental skills will be all but guaranteed to inflict the status on anything without Freeze resistance, and the gun's ability to cast Hail between turns can increase the chances even further by randomly applying Chill to foes (and players, but they should be dressed for the weather). It also empowers Ice attacks, but Lance has little access to that element outside of the Ice Storm occasionally cast by the gun's weapon-elemental skills.
Despite the risk of its unleash immediately freeing a Frozen target, the Alt Sub-Zero's ability to consistently immobilize a tricky foe (while also making them more vulnerable to your next attack) is a powerful ability. If Lance can Charge up a Hyper Beam (Haste support helps), he can Freeze entire waves of foes more efficiently than the Alt Book of Spells, albeit for a shorter period of time. The Hail it summons also lends itself well to combos with sources of Wet (such as Bubble Blast, Aqua Volley, or weapon-elemental skills with Baby Penguin equipped), powerful Ice skills, or even as an extra layer of insurance against Bio damage.
The Alt Sub Zero resists Ice, Wind and Water, with none of them becoming an immunity at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4
The Sub Zero is found in Lankyroot Jungle, in the leftmost chest one screen below the block puzzle. The chest is on a raft in the middle of the river, requiring Leafy Boots (obtained on the same screen) to reach it.

The Sub Zero is found inside a chest in the Forgotten Ruins, on the screen with 9 pedestals. The chest drops after putting Jungle Flowers on the pedestals according to the code in the Rainbow River.
