Glitch Areas are optional locations in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Overview

Glitch Areas are distortions in the fabric of reality itself, created when the party defeats a major boss or acquires a key item. While their exact nature is ambiguous, they are implied to be the result of the player disrupting The Devourer's simulated universe. Their presence is foreshadowed by one or more Glitch Cultists on the screen where the Glitch Area will appear later in the game.

The entrance to each Glitch Area appears as a large colored pixel floating in the overworld, constantly flickering, changing size, and occasionally emitting 1's and 0's. Interacting with the pixel will teleport the party to its corresponding Glitch Area; to leave, they need to use an exit that appears in the area (usually a ladder). When they leave the Glitch Area, they will be deposited on a different screen than the one where they entered; they may also notice some slight changes to their surroundings for a little while. After the Glitch Area is accessed for the first time, its surroundings may randomly change to their "glitched" form whenever the party passes through the screen.

With the exception of The Void, Glitch Areas consist of one screen, usually with three enemy groups, a few chests, and some hidden treasures. The player can leave the screen from any side, but this will only loop them to the opposite side of the area. The character icons at the bottom of the screen will also glitch out, becoming black and white or randomly distorted.

Hope Harbor Glitch Area

This Glitch Area appears before the stairs leading to the Grand Gallery, where Natalie was battled early in the game. It appears as a green diamond and is unlocked after the party obtains the Raft. When leaving, the player ends up in the screen above Jotun.

No Man's Land Glitch Area

This Glitch Area appears in a destroyed tower along the exterior of the Iron Fortress. It appears as a red diamond and is unlocked after the party obtains the Axe. When leaving, the player appears in at the western entrance of the Mystic Woods, with the Greenwood Village Slime Cat.

Mystic Woods Glitch Area

This Glitch Area appears on the screen to the right of the Mystic Woods Slime Cat, near the wooden bridge over the poisoned river. It appears as a purple diamond and is unlocked after the party defeats Laurelin. When leaving, the player appears by the lakeside shrine in the upper-right corner of the map.

Frozen Valley Glitch Area

This Glitch Area appears one screen to the left of Poseidon, under a series of carved stone arches. It appears as a blue diamond and is unlocked after the party defeats Poseidon. When leaving, the player appears in the screen below the Redpine Town Slime Cat.

The Void (Redpine Town Glitch Area)

The Void (named "54 68 65 20 56 6f 69 64" in the game) is a black diamond that appears at the cat statue in Redpine Town after accessing all of the other Glitch Areas. It is a simple, hellish area that causes a serious graphical bug that persists even after leaving. Note that there is no risk of losing any items or skills; to undo the bug, enter a battle after leaving The Void.

Unlike other Glitch Areas, The Void actually consists of two screens; the player must go north and interact with the tombstone to battle The Glitch. Attempting to walk in any other direction will loop the player as normal. Also unlike other Glitch Areas, The Void's exit point is the same as its entry point: a red sigil on the ground. When leaving, the player appears at the same place they entered from.

Foes

Most Glitch Areas contain foes from the surrounding region, along with two unique enemies: a member of the Pixel family and a Small Glitch.
