The Big Mud Slime is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is mostly found in the Mystic Woods.

Appearance

The Big Mud Slime is a huge ball of brown-grey mud; based on its bestiary description, it may actually be a form of quicksand. Like all Big Slimes, it has a simple face with a cat-like mouth and two shiny green eyes. It is surrounded by a trio of smaller balls made of the same mud as its main body; these balls are topped with small blemishes, as if chunks of clay, rocks, or other materials are embedded in them.

The Big Mud Slime itself has an assortment of plants on its head, with a massive white lily surrounded by vibrant green leaves. It has three lily pads to the left of the flower, a pair of large leaves similar to the ones summoned by Leaf Blade to the right, and a pair of small vines drooping directly below it, giving the impression of stray bangs.

Overview

The Big Mud Slime's arsenal is almost as diverse as the wetlands it is modeled after; while it specializes in Bio attacks, it can also use Earth and Water skills. Most of its attacks are multi-target, and inflict a variety of statuses ranging from Stagger to Poison to even Stun. Like other Big Slimes, it can summon its smaller Mud Slime brethren with its ground pounds; on higher difficulty levels, it has a chance to summon two at a time.

The Big Mud Slime's most dangerous attacks are Vines - which inflicts heavy single-target damage with a good chance of Poison and an Evade debuff - and its unique Razor Lilypads attack, essentially a much stronger version of the Mud Slime's Leaf Volley. While individual lily pads are quite weak, the sheer number of them means that they can readily overwhelm the party - even if spread out evenly, they will out-damage all other attacks but Vines. High Bio resistance can greatly reduce the threat of these attacks (due to their 100% elemental degree), and either Berserk or Syphon can prevent them from being used at all; however, it is generally easier to simply kill the Big Mud Slime directly.

Like other Slimes, the Big Mud Slime's most serious weakness is its extreme vulnerability to Instant Death. Both Shredder and Rainbow Blast from The Knife have a 50% chance of wiping out each member in a wave, while Double Shot from the Spine Snapper will effectively guarantee the victim's demise (The Knife can gain similar results with a single-target Rainbow Blast). If Death isn't an option, there are several other weaknesses to exploit; while it absorbs both Water and Bio, the Big Mud Slime is vulnerable to Fire, Bomb, Dark and especially Ice. Going after the Big Mud Slime with Eruption and following it up with Nitro Blitz will deal heavy damage, as will attacking with Antimatter Flux or Iceberg. Additionally, it has no resistance to status effects or stat drops, so it can be easily stunlocked. Obviously, Poison and Virus will only heal the Big Mud Slime.

With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, the Big Mud Slime loses its Bomb and Dark weaknesses, has its Ice weakness reduced, and becomes immune to Earth, Wind, and having its defenses debuffed. Strangely, it also loses its Bio absorption, making Poison or Virus infliction a viable tactic against it.

It is worth noting that the Big Mud Slime is the only foe capable of dropping Mushrooms, however they cannot be stolen and the chance is so low that it is not practical.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Ground Pound*;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Blow Bubbles (1/3), Razor Lilypads (1/3), Ground Pound* (1/3);
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Leap (1/2), Ground Pound* (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Leap (1/6), Blow Bubbles (1/6), Razor Lilypads (1/6), Mushroom (1/6), Vines (1/6), Ground Pound* (1/6).

* Ground Pound becomes Double Ground Pound when <49% HP.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 100% and not Syphoned → Razor Lilypads.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Slimes, the Big Mud Slime will inflict 2x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

The Big Mud Slime can be captured to be used as a summon. It casts a powered-up version of Mushroom on all foes, dealing decent physical Bio damage with a small chance to Stun them for two turns.
