―Lance being surprised at the return of an old friend(?) in an unexpected place

The Prototype 9X is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. It is found in the Battle Arena as the unique foe of Lance's solo challenge, but it appears in other places if "Foe Remix" is enabled; notably, a single unit appears as one of the waves in NoLegs's solo challenge.

Appearance

The Prototype 9X is a black and silver Defender with red crystals at the tips of its legs, just above its wheels. In addition to its machine guns and mortar cannon, it is armed with a pair of pincer-like "wave cannons" containing orbs of red light. The machine's legs and main cannons are adorned with red markings similar to that of a Cosmic Monolith, suggesting it was developed with technology reverse-engineered from them.

Overview

The Prototype 9X is a powerful foe with potent Dark and Bomb attacks. It can microwave all active members for high Non-Elemental magic damage and inflicts Dry to improve its Bomb-based damage output, has extremely high critical hit rates with its Dark attacks that can inflict Disable on Hard/Epic, or it can reduce the Accuracy of all active members with Flare to support its slightly above average evade. If encountered outside of the Battle Arena, Brave may be useful to stop critical hits. Note that while it has exceptional Magic Attack, this only serves to even out the power of its Drying Ray and Energy Barrage abilities.

Prototype 9X is resistant to many elements, but it is weak to Water, Thunder, and (to a lesser extent) Bomb; additionally, it absorbs Dark and is neutral to Holy. In terms of status effects, it is immune to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Poison, Virus, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death; it also has a modest resistance to non-HP stat drops. If "More Foe Resistance" is active, it loses its Bomb weakness and becomes immune to all of the elements it previously resisted, while increasing their non-HP debuff resistances by varying amounts. (+10% for Defences, +20% for Attacks, and +30% resistance for Accuracy and Evade.)

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Wave Guns Burst (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Drying Ray (1/5);
    • If a randomly selected player has at least a 10% Accuracy debuff → Energy Barrage (2/5);
    • Otherwise → Energy Barrage (4/15), Flare (2/15);
  • Otherwise → Wave Guns (1/5), Wave Guns Burst (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Drying Ray (1/5);
    • If a randomly selected player has at least a 10% Accuracy debuff → Energy Barrage (1/5);
    • Otherwise → Energy Barrage (2/15), Flare (1/15).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% → Machine Guns.

Summon

Prototype 9X can be captured and used as a summon; in Equip Remix, it also has a low chance of being called between turns by the Alt Shadow Blaster. It uses a powered-up version of its Wave Guns Burst to hit all foes for physical Dark damage; unlike the foe's version, it has normal Accuracy and no associated status effect in exchange for pure elemental damage, higher power, and an even better critical hit chance.

Relative to its cost, Prototype 9X is one of the most powerful multi-target summons in EBF5 due to its huge critical rate; unless the targets have Brave, it's effectively guaranteed to score a double critical hit for twice as much damage as its base power suggests. Applying effects such as Bad Luck and Stagger can further amplify its crit chance, potentially letting it inflict triple criticals; in fact, this is one of the easiest ways to earn the "Critical Condition" Medal.
