Defender

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki

The Defender is a midgame boss in Epic Battle Fantasy and an elite foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 4.

Appearance

The Defender looks like a robotic artillery unit with four metallic, wheeled legs and a large cannon placed on the turret. It also features two small machine guns near the legs.

In EBF1, the Defender is light green, with yellow-and-black hazard stripes around its cannon barrel and upper legs. Its EBF4 variant has dark grey where the original had green, as well as shorter antennae on its back.

Overview

The Defender attacks with bladed weapons, machine guns, and explosives fired from its cannon and side-mounted rocket launchers. It is usually weak against Bomb and Thunder damage while being resistant to Earth.

Epic Battle Fantasy

The Defender is the third boss of EBF1, as well as one of only two bosses that has an entire zone to itself (along with its fellow robot, the Mecha). It is weak against Bomb and especially Thunder damage while being resistant to Earth and especially Dark. At low health, it will start firing its cannon, inflicting considerable area-of-effect damage.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

After sitting out Epic Battle Fantasy 2 and 3, the Defender returns as a powerful foe in the Waste Disposal Plant. In addition to its classic machine guns and melee attacks, it can now use various types of bombs as cannon shells; unlike in EBF1, it doesn't gain a powerful attack at low health.

As a mechanical foe, the Defender is weak to Thunder and Bomb, but immune to Poison and resistant to Wind and Earth. It is also immune to a number of status effects - including Stun, Freeze, Syphon and Instant Death - and resistant to all stat debuffs; that's more resistances than certain minibosses have. However, it has no resistance to Curse, Tired, Weaken, Wet, or Stagger; the first three ailments can be used to slowly weaken its stats, while the other two will make it more susceptible to damage, especially from Thunder attacks.

Defenders also make several appearances in Battle Mountain:

  • As a helper to Dark Lance.
  • As the 33rd wave in the Monster Marathon. This one is a few levels higher than the party.
  • As a possible wave in the Endless Battle.
  • Four Defenders form the last wave in the Waste Disposal Plant-themed foe rush, found on the same screen as the original Praetorian MKII battle. Make sure to prepare.

In EBF, foe stats are specifically set per wave, thus two foes of the same type may have different stats (resistances will still be the same). See EBF Foe Waves for a list of all foe waves.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy

  • HP > 130k*dif (≈72%) → Hidden Blade (1/3), Hidden Sawblades (1/3), Machine Guns (1/3);
  • HP > 40k*dif (≈22%) → Hidden Blade (1/5), Hidden Sawblades (1/5), Machine Guns (1/5), Rocket Barrage (1/5), Main Cannon (1/5);
  • HP > 0 → Main Cannon.

* dif is x0.8 on Easy, x1 on Normal, x1.2 on Hard and x1.4 on Epic.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • Berserked or/and Syphoned → Hidden Blade;
  • >65% HP → Hidden Blade (4/20), Hidden Sawblades (4/20), Machine Guns (4/20), Rocket Barrage* (4/20), Big Blast (1/20), Flame Burst (1/20), Bullet Hell (1/20), Bind (1/20);
  • ≤65% to >32% HP → Hidden Sawblades (2/10), Machine Guns (2/10), Rocket Barrage* (2/10), Big Blast (1/10), Flame Burst (1/10), Bullet Hell (1/10), Bind (1/10);
  • ≤32% HP → Machine Guns (2/8), Rocket Barrage* (2/8), Big Blast (1/8), Flame Burst (1/8), Bullet Hell (1/8), Bind (1/8).

*Rocket Barrage becomes Hidden Sawblades when fighting the 4 visually downscaled Defenders at the last wave of Battle Mountain's Waste Disposal Plant-themed foe rush.

Prior to the v2 update (but after Battle Mountain update), a bug caused Rocket Barrage to always be replaced by Hidden Sawblades.

Trivia

  • The overall concept and design of the Defender seems to be heavily based on the enemies from the Metal Slug franchise.
  • As mentioned in the EBF1 Gallery, the Defender is named after the classic 1981 arcade video game Defender.
  • Several of the Defender's parts and weapons are based on parts in the Mecha Dress Up Game, similar to the Mecha, the Guardian, and the Praetorian.
  • While the Defender itself isn't present in Epic Battle Fantasy 5, it would inspire a small family of similar foes - see Defenders for more information.
