"This is the perfect weapon: it kills and cooks foes at the same time! They'll be nice and crispy right away!"
―Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Inferno is one of Matt's recurring swords in the Epic Battle Fantasy series.

Description

In the first two games, the Inferno is a large sword with an elaborate blade made of red energy with a light red edge and small markings along the middle. The blade is separated into three pieces near the base by three small dark red orbs, matching the color of the larger orb in the cross-guard. It also has a crimson grip.

In EBF5, the coloring of the entire weapon was altered. The four orbs and energy blade were changed to orange, and the handle became black with an orange stripe near the guard and a red pommel at the end of it. The markings on the blade are also noticeably larger, as are the curved spikes on its sides near the base.

True to its name, the Inferno typically empowers Matt's Fire attacks and gives his weapon-elemental skills a partial Fire attribute. It also tends to be somewhat magic-leaning, either via its stat boosts or its special effects.

Epic Battle Fantasy

The Inferno gives Matt a small boost to Attack and Magic Defence, along with a fair increase to his Magic Attack. Along with the Heaven's Gate, it's one of the only swords to add elemental damage to Matt's weapon-elemental skills, calculated off of the target's Eruption resistance; however, Matt's usually better off hitting Fire-weak foes with Eruption itself, since the sword also powers up that skill.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Inferno amplifies Matt's Magic Attack by a decent amount while also providing boosts to his Attack, Magic Defence, and Evade. It powers up Eruption and lets his Unleash reduce the Magic Defence of foes, which can help Natalie inflict more damage with her spells. It's also notable for one of the strongest elemental degrees of any sword, tied with the Blizzard at 75%.

Although the Inferno has some uses, particularly if Matt focuses on Air Strike, Power Metal, and their associated Skill Bonuses, its magic-leaning stats are largely a poor fit for the physical attacks he usually favors. Additionally, its ability to reduce Magic Defence can be easily replicated by Screamer, freeing up Matt to wield a more physically powerful sword like the Blizzard or the Soul Eater unless he specifically needs enhanced Fire damage.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Inferno was one of the new swords added alongside the v3 update of the game. Similar to its previous incarnations, the Inferno is an unorthodox sword that focuses more on increasing Matt's magical potential, giving a sizable boost to Magic Attack, but a rather mediocre boost to Attack. One of its more notable features is its high weapon elemental degree, making any Weapon-elemental attacks better at taking advantage of enemy Fire weaknesses. Other than that, the Inferno can also unleash Fire Spin for moderate Fire-elemental damage to all enemies that also inflicts a Defence debuff and Burn; it can also counter enemy attacks with Matt's Normal Attack, which may also unleash Fire Spin in turn.

Overall, the Inferno's stats and effects don't really mesh very well with Matt's kit, if aiming for Fire offence, either using the Magma Hammer or a stronger generalist sword will usually give better results. Higher elemental degree on its weapon-elemental attacks is not enough to make up for its lower Attack (particularly considering most weapon-elemental skills are physical in the first place), nor the fact they cannot receive the benefit of the sword's boost to Fire-elemental skills. It does provide some passive support through the occasional Fire Spin unleash, but that's not really enough to justify using the Inferno over most other swords, whether for pure offence or support.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Normal

The Inferno is a relatively average offensive weapon, with solid balanced offenses and decent increases to Evade and Accuracy. Its Weapon-elemental attacks can Burn targets and unleash Fiery Fume, which benefits from its elemental boost and can potentially add another Burn to the victim.

Despite a good amount of Fire-based damage output (both directly and over time), the Inferno is somewhat underwhelming overall; many other swords provide better offensive stats and/or special effects. However, its elemental damage and resistances are useful for the party's first trip through the Ice Cave and the battle against Anna, especially if it can be forged a few levels when it is obtained.

The Inferno resists Freeze, Chill, Bomb and Ice. The Chill and Freeze resistances become an immunity at Level 5.

Equip Remix

The Alt Inferno discards the shackles of hybrid offenses to become a lean, mean, physically offensive machine with high Attack and noticeable boosts to Evade and Accuracy. It empowers Fire skills, which Matt can exploit on his own, but it also has a mighty unleash in Volcano, with power stronger than most skills. While casting Eruption is more reliable than casting a bonus skill, the Inferno will Dry its target before casting Volcano, allowing for a remarkable damage output. However, Volcano has a low chance to be triggered in the first place, requiring a Normal Attack and/or the Meow Meow Badge to be used for best results; if the skill doesn't trigger, Matt's allies can exploit the Dry status with their own Fire and Bomb attacks.

Overall, the Alt Inferno is a useful choice for Fire damage, with the stats and abilities Matt needs to leave a big, crispy mark on his foes; while it'll Burn him between turns, this has no real impact in battle and can be easily compensated for with the right equipment. Compared to the Alt Fusion Blade, it's a little stronger and has a more consistent on-hit Dry effect, but it lacks a counter skill and a second elemental boost. As a generalist offensive weapon, it's outclassed by The Alt Chopper, which has identical Attack, a more consistent (if weaker) unleash, and a powerful counter attack.

The Alt Inferno resists Freeze, Chill, Bomb and Thunder. The first two become an immunity at Level 5.

Trivia

  • The Inferno has some aesthetic similarities to the Thor's Hammer and the Gigavolt, being weapons made primarily of pure energy surrounding a series of small orbs.
