Big Sand Slime

From Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Big Sand Slime is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5, and a summon in the latter. In EBF4, it appears primarily in the sandy area of Goldenbrick Resort; in EBF5, it is mainly found on the eastern side of Hope Harbor, near the Ice Cave.

Appearance

True to its name, the Big Sand Slime is a larger version of the Sand Slime, with a large flaxen sand-like body with eyes and a large mouth. Like all Big Slimes, it is surrounded by three smaller blobs of a similar appearance, but without any facial features.

In EBF4, the Big Sand Slime had a beach theme much like regular Sand Slimes, with an orange starfish, a pink coral branch, and a red crab stuck on top of it. It also appears to have blue eyes.

In EBF5, the Big Sand Slime has a more realistic texture, green eyes, and a desert theme. The top of its main body is decorated with some white bones and three large cacti, each with simple faces. A smaller, featureless cactus is embedded in each of its surrounding blobs.

Overview

The Big Sand Slime is a fairly capable foe that uses Earth skills along with one other element that varies between its appearances. It can also leap at players and cause small earthquakes that also have a chance to summon Sand Slime reinforcements. It has better-than-average offenses and a good amount of HP, but a poor Evade stat means that it won't be dodging many attacks.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Big Sand Slime uses Earth and Water attacks that can inflict Wet and Stagger; its Sand Dune skill can also inflict a serious Accuracy debuff. Most of its moves are physical, but it can also cast Bubble Blast as a magical all-target option. Its basic Body Slam is arguably its most dangerous attack, due to its not-insignificant chance of inflicting Slimed on its victim. On higher difficulty settings, the chance of this happening doubles to a rather threatening 60%, so defeating the Big Sand Slime quickly becomes somewhat more important.

Fortunately, the Big Sand Slime has a number of weaknesses, including a combination of Water, Ice, and Freeze vulnerabilities that can be exploited to immobilize and heavily damage it at the same time. It's also weak to Dark and especially Bio, but it absorbs Earth, resists Fire, and is immune to Wind, Thunder, and Burn. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" removes its weaknesses to Water, Ice, and Freeze; it also becomes immune to having its Magic Attack and Magic Defence lowered.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Big Sand Slime has a wide range of mostly Earth and Bio-based physical attacks, which can do a fair bit of damage coming off of its higher-than-average offensive stats. It can apply various status effects - including Dry, Stun, Poison, and Stagger - although their infliction chances aren't very high. The same cannot be said of the Accuracy debuff it can inflict with Sand Dune; it's all but guaranteed to land, so Lock On, high-Accuracy gear, and/or a way to debuff enemy Evade are recommended. Additionally, the Big Sand Slime's Ground Pound attacks can give it a Charge for a super-powered leaping quake on its next turn; this deals good damage to the whole party and summons up to three Sand Slimes at once, but also Staggers the Big Sand Slime for a while, making it more vulnerable to damage.

With poor base Evade, the Big Sand Slime is highly unlikely to dodge the party's attacks unless it hampers their Accuracy with Sand Dune. Wind is the most effective element against it, but it also has significant weaknesses to Ice, Dark, and Bomb; on the other hand, Earth does absolutely nothing to it. Additionally, it is extremely vulnerable to Doom and Instant Death, which can be exploited with skills like Shredder to destroy it and its Sand Slime backup in a single move.

With "More Foe Resistance", the Big Sand Slime becomes immune to Wind, neutral to Bomb and Dark, and immune to defensive debuffs.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • Berserked or/and Syphoned → Body Slam (1/2), Ground Pound (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Body Slam (1/5), Ground Pound (1/5), Sand Dune (1/5), Flood (1/5), Bubble Burst (1/5).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Action

  • If Charged → Charged Ground Pound;
  • If Syphoned, catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Ground Pound*;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Poisonous Thorns Volley (1/2), Ground Pound* (1/2);
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Leap (1/3), Poisonous Thorns Volley (1/3), Ground Pound* (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Leap (1/5), Poisonous Thorns Volley (1/5), Cacti (1/5), Sand Dune (1/5), Ground Pound* (1/5).

* Ground Pound becomes Double Ground Pound when <49% HP.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 100% and not Syphoned → Poisonous Thorns Volley.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Slimes, the Big Sand Slime will inflict 2x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

In EBF5, the Big Sand Slime can be captured and used as a summon. It uses a powered-up Cacti on a single target, dealing three hits of physical Bio damage with a small chance of Stun.

Trivia

  • In EBF5, one of the Big Sand Slime's cacti has a face highly resembling a Creeper from the game Minecraft.
  • The Big Sand Slime is the only recurring Big Slime to change its elemental affinity between appearances; it went from being Water-themed in EBF4 to Bio-themed in EBF5.
