Big Lava Slime

The Big Lava Slime is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is typically found around The Rapture and the eastern half of the Freezeflame Dungeon.

Appearance

The Big Lava Slime is a massive blob of orange lava with orange-red eyes and the cat-like smile typical of EBF5 Big Slimes. A small volcano is embedded in its top, visibly leaking a few drops of lava from its crater. It is flanked by a trio of smaller blobs that have a piece of volcanic rock sticking out of them. Small cracks are visible on the left side of the blobs, implying that they may be hardening slightly.

Overview

The Big Lava Slime predominantly uses physical attacks, mostly Fire-based to varying degrees. These attacks are usually single-target (with the exception of the randomly-targeting triple Fire Rock) and have good chances to inflict Burn or Dry; the latter is concerning, as it increases the damage of subsequent Fire attacks. The Slime can also use a multi-target part-Earth physical skill that has a tiny Stagger chance and calls a Lava Slime to reinforce it; after taking significant damage, it'll upgrade this attack to hit twice, although it's no longer guaranteed to call backup. Its sole magic attack deals minimal Dark damage to the entire party, but is primarily intended to lower their Accuracy.

On higher difficulty levels, the Big Lava Slime has improved status chances on its jumping attacks and a chance to summon two Lava Slimes at once with its Ground Pounds. Volcano now inflicts Scorch instead of Burn, and Dark Smoke has a chance to apply Shroud along with a stronger Accuracy debuff.

To reduce the Big Lava Slime's damage output, focus on resistances to Fire, Dry, and Burn/Scorch. High Defence is also useful to mitigate its strong physical attacks, particularly Volcano; Magic Defence is relatively negligible, since its decently high Magic Attack can't compensate for Dark Smoke's low Base Power. The Accuracy debuff isn't too helpful for the Slime itself - its base Evade is very low - but more evasive foes could be more difficult to hit. Evade debuffs or high-Accuracy equipment can help counteract this. As with all Slime variants, its biggest weakness is its hideous vulnerability to Instant Death, which should be exploited when possible to quickly take it down.

The Big Lava Slime absorbs Fire, is immune to Chill and Freeze, and resists Ice and Earth, but it's very weak to Dark, extremely weak to Water, and massively vulnerable to Doom and Instant Death. If the player enables "More Foe Resistance", it loses its Dark weakness and gains immunity to Earth, Wind, and defensive debuffs; also, its Water weakness is slightly lessened.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Ground Pound*;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Dark Smoke (1/2), Ground Pound* (1/2);
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Leap (1/3), Fiery Leap (1/3), Ground Pound* (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Leap (1/6), Fiery Leap (1/6), Dark Smoke (1/6), Fire Rock (1/6), Volcano (1/6), Ground Pound* (1/6).

* Ground Pound becomes Double Ground Pound when <49% HP.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 100%, ≤33% HP and not Syphoned → Fire Rock.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Slimes, the Big Lava Slime will inflict 2x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

The Big Lava Slime can be captured and used as a summon; additionally, the Alt Devil's Fork can occasionally call it between turns. It blasts a single foe with a powered-up Volcano, hitting them three times for physical Fire damage and a high chance of a fairly severe Burn effect.
