Rock Turtle

Not to be confused with the fire-themed Lava Turtle, named Rock Eater in EBF2 and 5.

The Rock Turtle (called Rock Eater in Epic Battle Fantasy 3), is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. It is usually seen in stony areas, like Volcano Peak and the Crystal Caverns.

Appearance

The Rock Turtle is black in color and lacks a visible tail, unlike other Turtles. It has a large crescent-shaped shell made of dark grey stones fused together; similar material forms a curved horn on its head.

Overview

The Rock Turtle is a durable foe that uses strong physical attacks, several of which are partly Earth-based. Like other Turtles, it can tuck into its shell to buff itself, but its unique and most dangerous attack is the Flip. Against all logic, the Rock Turtle propels itself forward to smash a single player with its spiked shell, dealing massive part-Earth physical damage - on higher difficulties, it even carries a chance of Instant Death! Fortunately, the Flip is also somewhat inaccurate and its Death chance isn't extremely high, so evasive tactics and moderate Death resistance will make it less of a threat.

Rock Turtles consistently resist Fire, Thunder, and Dark, but have severe weaknesses to Water and Holy.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Rock Eater is the most aggressive member of its family...if only because of a programming error that prevents it from using its buff skill like other Eaters can. However, it compensates with its devastating (if slightly inaccurate) Flip attack, which deals serious half-Earth physical damage to a single player with an improved chance of critical hits; on higher difficulties, it becomes even stronger on top of gaining a decent Instant Death chance. Its other attacks are relatively tame in comparison, but its non-elemental horn attack has a slightly boosted critical hit rate and its multi-target Ground Pound has higher-than-average Accuracy and a strong elemental degree.

Between high base HP and strong defenses, the Rock Eater can take a lot of punishment; fortunately, its mediocre Evade means that it won't be dodging many attacks. Try to take it out in a single blow once its HP falls to 28.5%; at that point, it'll spam its Flip attack. Lowering its Accuracy or buffing the party's Evade is a good way to reduce the chances of its strongest skill finding its mark; alternatively, inflicting Berserk (which it's extremely vulnerable to) will limit it to its Horn Stab. It also has no resistance to Poison, Doom, or Death, all of which can be very helpful in taking it out with minimal offensive effort. Syphon would have been another option to stop it from using Flip, but the aforementioned programming error essentially means that the status only slightly reduces the likelihood of it doing so instead.

The Rock Eater absorbs Earth and Dark and is immune to Fire, Thunder, and Wind. On the other hand, it is very weak to Bomb, severely weak to Holy and Berserk, and enormously weak to Water.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Rock Turtle is a ponderous but durable foe with low Evade but high HP and Defence; it can buff the latter even further by briefly hiding in its shell. This skill also gives it Defend to further reduce incoming damage for a turn, as well as an Attack buff to give its moves a little more punch. Aside from its basic Horn Stab, all of its attacks are partly Earth-based; Ground Pound is very weak, but it hits twice with a small chance to Stagger the entire party. Its Flip is by far its deadliest attack, with a low elemental degree making Earth resistance less useful; fortunately, it's also pretty inaccurate. On higher difficulties, Flip gains a significant chance to inflict Instant Death while its buffing move also casts Tremor on a random player.

Aside from evasion strategies (since two of its moves have below-average Accuracy), applying Berserk is an option to stop the Rock Turtle from using its buffing move and its dangerous Flip attack. Wet-based parties can exploit its weaknesses to Water and Ice, while Giga Drill turns its defensive buff against it while hitting its Earth weakness; alternatively, stacking Poison will cut through its HP in short order, even if it protects itself. Magic attacks are also recommended to hit its lower defensive stat.

The Rock Turtle strongly resists Bomb, Stun, Doom, and Death, and is nearly immune to Fire, Thunder, Dark and Wind; however, it has a significant weakness to Bio, massive weaknesses to Water, Ice, and Earth, and an extreme weakness to Holy. If "More Foe Resistance" is active, it becomes neutral to Bio and Water, and resistant to Weaken, Tired, and Curse.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

  • Berserked → Horn Stab;
  • Syphoned → Horn Stab (1/3), Ground Pound (1/3), Flip* (1/3);
  • ≥28.5% HP → Horn Stab (1/4), Ground Pound (1/4), Flip* (2/4);
  • <28.5% HP → Flip.

*The Shell Smash attack, although it exists, is never used; what could activate it triggers Flip instead. If it would've worked correctly, Syphoning the foe would prevent it from using its strongest physical attack.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • Berserked → Ground Pound;
  • Otherwise → Horn Stab (1/4), Ground Pound (1/4), Shell Smash (1/4), Flip (1/4).
