Kaladanda is a non-elemental staff available to Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. In the former's case, it was added to the game with the v3 update.

Description

Kaladanda is made of a very long and thin bone, and its head is made from a draconic skull resembling that of a small Zombie Hydra; unlike the foe, the skull's horns are grey instead of bone-white. The staff's pommel resembles the end of a femur, while the shaft develops segmentation and spikes similar to a spinal column near the head. A tattered strip of what appears to be Leather is wrapped around the top of the staff, just below the jaws of the skull.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Kaladanda is a support staff with rather subpar stat boosts; it only increases Attack and Magic Attack, and neither to a significant degree. However, it can inflict both Weaken and an Attack debuff with weapon-elemental attacks, and can also unleash Evil Spikes, which has a high chance to inflict a Magic Defence debuff. With her Normal Attack (which guarantees the unleash), Natalie can simultaneously inflict a heavy Attack debuff, multiple stacks of Weaken, and a heavy Magic Defence debuff; this both helps reduce enemy damage output and sets up Lance to do heavy magical damage, especially with his Dark skills.

Unfortunately, Kaladanda has multiple flaws that hinder its actual support potential. First of all, Natalie does not have any multi-target weapon-elemental skills (except for the Rapture Limit Break), meaning the weapon's debuff and status potential is limited to only one target at a time. Second, a lot of the tougher enemies and bosses you would want to use the staff to debilitate have some measure of debuff or status resistance, making Kaladanda's effects unreliable even when fully forged; a lot of the other support staves like the Flower Pot, the Dreamcatcher, and the Wrecking Rod compensate for this with counters or auto-skills that can apply their statuses/debuffs, meaning Natalie doesn't have to actively use as many of her turns on infliction. Additionally, most of the aforementioned support staves have actual defensive stat bonuses on top of similar Magic Attack to the Kaladanda, so they can improve Natalie's survivability on top of their supportive capabilities.

Overall, Kaladanda's ability to rapidly erode enemy offenses and Magic Defense can be useful enough, but its issues make it a lot more of a niche option than it may initially appear.

Kaladanda resists Instant Death, Doom, and Weaken, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5.

Normal

With above-average defenses backed by offensive stats second only to the Obsidian Staff, Kaladanda seems to offer Natalie a great combination of power and endurance. Unfortunately, its offensive effectiveness is hampered by a lack of an elemental boost and a high chance to Weaken Natalie between turns; the latter also gives it a makeshift Dark weakness, although this is not too important in most situations. Fortunately, the staff makes up for its lackluster damage output by being a very powerful support tool.

Kaladanda's Weapon-elemental skills (including its Normal Attack counter) can inflict Weaken and substantially debuff Defence on contact; in other words, Rainbow Blast becomes a damaging Debilitate with no cooldown and a pretty good chance of Weaken. While the debuff caps at 70% instead of 80% (assuming the player uses two pieces of debuff-boosting gear), its spammable nature makes it highly effective, especially since its associated status can set up allied Dark skills. Natalie's broad range of shared debuff skills further emphasizes its support abilities, but the Beholding Eye is typically better for general support builds.

In a sense, Kaladanda is the physical counterpart to the Obsidian Staff; while the latter applies Dry and Invisible in a single Normal Attack to ramp up Lance's Bullet Hell, Kaladanda finds itself more useful when paired with moves like Twilight Tango and Demon Swords. It has good synergy with the Book of Spells (which can apply Freeze and Enchanted) for physical damage combos, and status-changing Flairs can help it support different elemental offensives as well.

Kaladanda resists Weaken, Tired, Confuse, Stagger, Curse and Bad Luck. All of these become an immunity at Level 5, but it does not protect against self-inflicted Weaken.

Equip Remix

With great boosts to Defence, Magic Defence, and HP, Alt Kaladanda makes Natalie quite a bit more durable. Its Attack and Magic Attack are serviceable enough to give her attacks and heals respectable power; however, its tendency to self-apply Tired between turns can complicate offensive strategies. Its Weapon-elemental skills can inflict Tired on foes while debuffing their Attack and sometimes unleashing Bones; it can also summon a Skeleton Hand between turns to give Good Luck to the entire party.

Although Alt Kaladanda is less effective for tanking than the Alt Wrecking Rod or the Alt Oak Staff, its stats and on-hit effects give it a solid role as defensive support. Its overall bulk is only second to the Alt Soul Crusher (which has identical defenses and a bit more HP), and Natalie can use Cleanse to mitigate Tired if it becomes too annoying. Its ability to instantly cripple enemy Attack and slowly wear down their Accuracy and Evade helps reduce incoming damage, especially from physically-inclined foes; Tired can also be used to amplify Bio damage, such as in a Virus party.

Alt Kaladanda resists Weaken, Tired, Confuse, Stagger, Curse and Bad Luck, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5. This does not prevent its self-inflicted Tired from activating, however.

Kaladanda is located in a chest in the Battle Mountain that was added in the v3 update, specifically on the shop screen at the summit of the mountain.

Trivia

A Kaladanda-like staff can be seen underneath the table in the second shop screen of EBF1
  • Kaladanda can be considered part of a subset of bone-themed weapons in EBF5, along with the Human Skull, The Deceased, the Club of Withering and the Spine Snapper. Other than their visual appearance, their common themes include being focused around debuffs, being able to inflict either Instant Death or Doom (be it directly or through bonus/auto skills), and being Non-elemental (except for the Spine Snapper).
    • In addition to the above, Kaladanda could be specifically considered the magical counterpart to the Club of Withering. Both weapons have similar aesthetics and stats, as well as the ability to debuff the defensive stat opposite to their wielder's favored offense; Kaladanda is used by the magic specialist Natalie and can debuff Defence, while the Club of Withering is used by the physically-focused Matt and debuffs Magic Defence.
  • Kaladanda takes its name from the staff of Yama in Hindi mythology, said to be capable of killing anyone whom it struck, with no way of avoiding their death.
  • In the original Epic Battle Fantasy, a staff resembling Kaladanda can be seen under the table in the second potion shop. This is best seen in the Gallery; in-game, the shop menu obscures most of the shaft.
