Giga Golem

The Giga Golem is a boss in Epic Battle Fantasy 2. It is encountered in Wave 13, at the end of the frozen beach/tundra. Following the v2 update of Epic Battle Fantasy 5, it returns as an optional boss in the Data Bunker's first EBF2 simulation.

Appearance

The Giga Golem is a massive, humanoid amalgamation of stone. Most of its body is black, but its left arm, the left half of its torso, and the left side of its featureless head are grey. Its left arm is a large, club-like appendage dotted with spiky blue crystals, while its right arm is a crude sword dotted with glowing orange craters; both are connected to the golem's shoulders by small rocks resembling elbow joints. A large crystal sits in the center of the golem's body, switching between red and blue depending on its current element.

The EBF5 bestiary claims that the Giga Golem was formed when a fire and ice golem fused together.

Overview

The Giga Golem's main gimmick is its ability to change its elemental affinity between Fire and Ice, altering its weaknesses, resistances, and base defenses. It uses its massive arms for single-target physical attacks that do part-elemental damage, but it can also cast a pure elemental spell that hits both players at once; the latter is determined by its current element and also causes it to switch forms. Its attacks can inflict dangerous debuffs and status effects on top of being very strong, and it often calls in reinforcements from Fire and Ice-based foes.

No matter its appearance or affinity, the Giga Golem is immune to Poison and Stun, resistant to Thunder and Wind, and weak to Bomb. Its Ice form is weak to Fire, Earth, and Dark while resisting Ice and Water; these resistances are mostly reversed when it switches to Fire form, with its Dark weakness being replaced by a Holy weakness.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Giga Golem is a predictable but powerful opponent with some unique gimmicks to use against Matt and Natalie. It spends its first two turns smashing them with devastating single-target physical attacks; one is part-Fire and has a chance to reduce Magic Defence, and the other is part-Ice and capable of debuffing Defence. Interestingly, the former is slightly stronger, while the latter has a slightly higher debuff chance (except on Epic difficulty, when they'll both be guaranteed to inflict their debuff on top of said debuffs becoming more powerful).

Every third turn, the Giga Golem will cast an accurate elemental spell to hit both players at once, also summoning one of its Balls for backup. Its Fire spell is slightly weaker and less accurate, but it hits multiple times and has a good chance to debuff Attack with the last hit; on the other hand, its Ice magic is all but guaranteed to Freeze both players for three turns. These spells also change its element from Fire to Ice or vice-versa, largely inverting its resistances, weaknesses, and defenses; each form also has its own Bestiary entry, so don't forget to re-scan it after its first elemental shift.

In both of its forms, the Giga Golem has an immunity to Poison, Stun, and Blind while strongly resisting all other status effects and debuffs. In terms of elements, it's always resistant to Thunder and Wind while being weak to Bomb; the rest of its resistances are determined by its current element.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Giga Golem's attributes are mostly similar to its appearance in EBF2. It uses lightly elemental physical attacks for two turns before casting a multi-target spell to damage the party and change its elemental affinity; if "Foe Remix" is enabled, it'll also call in Eaters as backup. Many of its attacks can debuff the party's stats; the only exception is its Ice spell, which has a high chance to inflict a long-lasting Freeze instead. Higher difficulty levels make its debuffs more powerful, also increasing the infliction chance on its spells; notably, Blizzard's Freeze chance is cranked up to 500%, making immunity and/or Regen support mandatory to avoid being immobilized and left vulnerable.

Unlike in EBF2, the Giga Golem only has one Bestiary entry; in battle, it'll automatically update itself whenever it switches elements. It's also guaranteed to enter battle in its Ice form, instead of having an equal chance to start in either form as it did in its previous appearance. As a Classic foe, it ignores Lovable and can't be affected by status effects that didn't exist in its debut game; this includes Invisible and Enchanted.

No matter its current elemental affinity, the Giga Golem resists Thunder, Bio, and Wind while being slightly weak to Bomb. It's immune to all status effects apart from Syphon and Dispel, which it resists instead; it's also quite resistant to all stat debuffs apart from HP. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" makes it resistant to Bomb and slightly increases its debuff resistances.

In its Ice form, the Giga Golem also resists Ice and Water while being neutral to Holy and weak to Earth, Dark, and especially Fire. Its base Defence is average and its base Magic Defence is fairly high. "More Foe Resistance" removes its Earth weakness.

In Fire form, the Giga Golem's Ice-specific resistances are largely inverted; it now resists Fire while being neutral to Dark and Earth and weak to Water, Holy, and especially Ice. Its base Defence becomes very high, but its base Magic Defence becomes mediocre. If "More Foe Resistance" is on, its Water weakness is removed.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

  • Sealed → Arm Crush (1/2), Sword Strike (1/2);
  • Every 3rd turn;
    • If on Fire Form → Blizzard;
    • Otherwise → Fire Rain;
  • Otherwise → Arm Crush (1/2), Sword Strike (1/2).

The Giga Golem switches forms whenever it uses Blizzard/Fire Rain.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Arm Crush (1/2), Sword Strike (1/2);
  • Every 3rd turn;
    • If on Fire Form → Blizzard;
    • Otherwise → Fire Rain;
  • Otherwise → Arm Crush (1/2), Sword Strike (1/2).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • If HP% is lower than Blood Counter → 100%;
    • If Syphoned → Arm Crush (1/2), Sword Strike (1/2);
    • Otherwise;
      • If on Fire Form → Blizzard;
      • Otherwise → Fire Rain.

* Blood Counter starts at 80 and gets reduced by 20 every time the Giga Golem counters.

Additionally, like all the Classic foes, the Giga Golem ignores the Lovable status on players.

The Giga Golem switches forms whenever it uses Blizzard/Fire Rain.

Strategy

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

If you haven't already done so, make sure to Scan both of the Giga Golem's forms to help keep track of its weaknesses. Some useful skills to have before the battle include:

  • Matt: Aerial Support, Secret Weapon, Counter, Arctic Wind, Sword Heart, Cat Tamer, Cat Warrior, Survivor, and any skills that increase his stats when hit with a powerful attack.
  • Natalie: Elementalist, Thunderclap, Magic Counter, Healer, Bunny!!!, Angel, and any skills that increase her stats when hit with a powerful attack.

For the actual battle, your first priority should be dealing with the Balls accompanying the boss. If it's a Fire Ball, you should target it for immediate elimination - its suicide attack will likely bring your characters into KO range for the Giga Golem. If it's an Ice Ball, you can probably get away with stunning it via Unleash or Thunderbolt; not only will you keep it contained by doing this, but you will prevent the Giga Golem from summoning more Balls when it switches elements.

For the Giga Golem itself, you should focus on maintaining ProtectBarrier, and Regen (the last via Slime Bunny) as much as possible. The Golem performs two physical attacks before casting a magic attack and changing its element on its third turn. Although you can switch Matt's swords to keep up with the changes, a more efficient method is to constantly cast Airstrike; both of the Giga Golem's forms are vulnerable to Bomb attacks, and you might pick off the Balls in the process.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Giga Golem's melee attacks are incredibly powerful and debuff your defenses, and their low elemental degrees makes resistance ineffective. Since they only hit once, the Morale status can be used to survive them, also negating their debuffing side effects. To guard against its multi-target magic, make both players as resistant to Ice and Fire as possible; since you're only bringing in two players, 100% Fire and Ice resistance is relatively easy to achieve, especially if you have one male and one female. Immunity to Freeze is also extremely important, due to the massive status chance on Blizzard.

If "Foe Remix" is enabled, the Giga Golem will also summon Rock Eaters and Glacier Eaters whenever it casts a spell and changes elements. Keeping your defensive buffs up will be mandatory to mitigate the damage dealt from the turtles' attacks, reinforcing the importance of the Morale status.

The Syphon status can be used to block the Giga Golem's magic attacks, which also prevents it from switching forms (and summoning backup in Foe Remix). This allows the players to focus on maintaining Morale and Defence buffs over resistances; make sure to use a status build for your Syphon infliction, since the boss is pretty resistant to the status.

Summon

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Giga Golem can be captured and used as a summon. It targets a single foe with either Arm Crush (Ice) or Sword Strike (Fire) for significant physical damage; unlike its boss form, these attacks are pure elemental. Although the random nature of its attack makes it unreliable for damage combos or weakness exploitation, it's fairly strong for its SP cost.

Trivia

  • The Giga Golem inspired the design of the Golem enemies appearing in Epic Battle Fantasy 3.
  • The Crystal Golem boss in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 has many similarities to the Giga Golem. Aside from being boss-level Golems, both have spiky crystals on their bodies and oversized front limbs, and both can switch between multiple elements (including Ice and Fire), with the change being indicated by the color of a large crystal in the middle of their bodies. The main difference is that the Giga Golem has a bipedal humanoid form and switches between two elements as part of a telegraphed attack pattern, while the Crystal Golem is quadrupedal, has three elements to choose from, and changes its element every time it's hit.
  • The Giga Golem's boss theme in EBF2 (Heroes March) was reused as a normal battle theme in EBF3.
