The Ice Sprite (also known as Frost Sprite) is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. It is typically found in cold areas, such as the Frozen Valley or the Crystal Caverns.

Appearance

The Ice Sprite resembles a small blue humanoid with a "skirt" made of ice crystals. Other crystals protrude from its back and around its head.

In EBF4, the Frost Sprite has small white eyes and a mouth that only appears when it uses certain attacks. When it became the Ice Sprite in EBF5, it gained blue eyes, a mouth that is visible at all times, and a small grey diamond in its forehead.

Overview

True to its name and appearance, the Ice Sprite specializes in Ice attacks; many of them can Freeze their victims, but it also carries a relatively powerful skill with another status effect (Instant Death in EBF4, Weaken in EBF5). Most of its skills are single-target, but it can also summon a snowstorm to potentially Freeze the entire party at once - however, this also has a chance to Freeze other foes as well. In EBF4, this attack also did light magical Ice damage, slightly healing the Sprite along with any other Ice-absorbing foes.

Since most of the Ice Sprite's skills are pure Ice-elemental, high Ice resistance will negate most of their damage. Syphon and Berserk can lock the Ice Sprite out of its Freezing skills, but it will become more likely to use its strongest attacks to compensate.

The Ice Sprite absorbs both Ice and Water while being immune to Freeze, but it has no other resistances and a plethora of weaknesses. It is vulnerable to Bio, Dark, Thunder, and especially Fire and Earth. It is also susceptible to Poison, which accentuates its Bio weakness.

In EBF5, the Ice Sprite gains an additional weakness to Virus, which can quickly cut it down without the party even attacking it directly. However, if "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, its Bio and Dark weaknesses becomes resistances and its Fire and Earth weaknesses are significantly reduced, leaving Thunder as the most effective element. It also gains resistances to Stun, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

  • Berserked and/or Syphoned → Head Bash (1/2), Ice Spike (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Head Bash (1/4), Ice Spike (1/4), Freezing Breath (1/4), Snow (1/4).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Flee;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Blizzard;
  • If Berserked → Avalanche;
  • If Syphoned → Head Bash;
  • Otherwise → Head Bash (1/4), Freezing Breath (1/4), Avalanche (1/4), Blizzard (1/4).

Before the v2 update, the Ice Sprite had the same behaviour for Syphon and Berserk: Head Bash (1/2), Avalanche (1/2).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% and not Syphoned → Avalanche.

Summon

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Frost Sprite summon can be obtained from a chest on the Crystal Caverns' Slime Cat screen, after lighting up all torches to open the gates. When used, a Frost Sprite will spew frost at the foes, dealing minor Ice-elemental damage with a high chance to inflict a turn of Freeze and a moderate Evade debuff. It is best used in combination with the Cloudburst skill or the Giant Squid summon for over 100% area-of-effect Freeze chance.
