Evil Tail

The Evil Tail is a foe found in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. Typically found in Dark-affiliated areas like The Rift or Graybone Cemetery, it is associated with the Evil Worm, although their exact relationship varies between games.

Appearance

The Evil Tail appears as a short, sausage-like chunk of sickly brown flesh dotted with dark brown spines. The largest two spines are on the tip of the tail, appearing to form a crude pincer. Its midsection is riddled with boils, with the largest ones on its back bearing markings that make them resemble tiny faces.

Overview

The Evil Tail is a simple foe with decently powerful single-target physical attacks, some of which can inflict status effects that range from annoying to debilitating. Aside from its elemental weaknesses (always including Earth and Holy), it suffers from low base Accuracy, which the party can exploit with an Evade-based strategy. Conversely, it has no consistent elemental resistances, but its status resistances always include Stun and Instant Death.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Evil Tail is a rare foe that only appears in two battles. During the final battle in The Rift, it is summoned alongside an Evil Worm whenever Akron switches to his Raised form (assuming there's room on the enemy field). It also appears in the second ambush battle in the 60 Medals Area of Volcano Peak, where the party will have to deal with Level 38 Evil Tails in two waves (alongside Level 38 Evil Worms).

The Evil Tail exclusively uses physical attacks, with some being non-elemental and others being part-elemental. Emerge and Flip are relatively inconsequential, with the former being part-Earth and the latter having below-average Accuracy, but the rest of its moves can inflict problematic status effects; Spikes has a small chance to inflict mild Poison on top of doing slightly Bio-based damage, Prick can reliably Stun the victim for two turns, and the slightly Dark-based Death Spike lives up to its name by having a great chance of Instant Death. The latter two moves can make the Evil Tail a serious annoyance if the party's resistances aren't up to snuff, especially since they'll have much stronger enemies to worry about at the same time.

Fortunately, the Evil Tail has very poor Evade and especially Accuracy; although its base stats are actually very high, they don't scale with its level. If these can't be exploited sufficiently, inflicting Berserk will lock it into spamming Emerge; the power boost is mitigated by its below-average Attack and the move's lack of secondary effects. If fought conventionally, remember that it'll stop using Emerge and Prick at low HP, but its chance of using Death Spike increases.

Earth is the best element to use against an Evil Tail, but Holy and Thunder are also highly effective and it has no elemental resistances. On the status front, it's immune to Syphon, quite resistant to Stun, and moderately resistant to Instant Death.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Evil Tail is a straightforward foe with three single-target physical moves, each with a decent chance to inflict a status effect on their victim. It can spear itself out of the ground to deal part-Earth damage and potentially Stagger the target, prod them with its spiked tip for a chance of Stun, or burst out of the ground and do a quick flip that hits twice and runs the risk of inflicting Poison. The latter two moves deal some Bio damage, but the elemental degree is low enough to make resistance negligible.

On its own, the Evil Tail isn't particularly notable, lacking any additional patterns or interactions with status effects like Syphon or Berserk. However, it's almost invariably fought alongside an Evil Worm, which has a chance to spawn a new Tail every turn as long as there's space on its side. As such, it's usually better to focus on taking down the Worm while whittling down the Tails with multi-target skills; alternatively, skills like Flare and Reflex can exploit their poor base Accuracy.

The Evil Tail is weak to Fire and Water, but Earth and especially Holy are the absolute best choices for killing it quickly. On the other hand, it's resistant to Bomb, Wind, Stun, Freeze, Doom, and Instant Death while absorbing Bio and Dark. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" removes its Fire and Water weaknesses while making it resistant to Attack and Defence debuffs.

Like the Worms they're spawned by, Evil Tails have a very low chance to drop Beef when killed. Farming them for it is generally inadvisable; not only is the drop rate ludicrously low, the Evil Worm's chance to spawn new Tails isn't very high.

Trivia

  • The Evil Tail's Bestiary description in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 is directly copied from the Evil Worm, causing it to inaccurately state that it uses Bomb and Water attacks while failing to mention its ability to inflict Earth damage.
  • An Evil Tail appears when the Evil Worm summon is used in EBF4, although it does nothing whatsoever.
  • Despite its name, the Evil Tail has never actually been depicted as the tail of an Evil Worm; the animation for its Flip attack shows that it is an independent organism. However, the Evil Worm is shown to have a tail resembling an Evil Tail when released from the mouth of Akron's Raised form in EBF3; coupled with the Evil Tail's EBF4 Bestiary description, it may be implied that Evil Tails are a larval form of the Evil Worm generated by asexual reproduction.
