Roasted Gloop

The Roasted Gloop (known as Ashen Gloop in several demos) is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is mainly found in The Rapture and the fire side of the Freezeflame Dungeon.

Appearance

The Roasted Gloop resembles a black stump horizontally bisected to accommodate a black blob creature. Two white eyes and slim arms are visible between the cracked halves of the stump, with orange details along the edges of the wood. The top of the stump has what appears to be a small pool of orange lava, while the bottom half has several short roots that the Gloop uses to crawl around.

Roasted Gloops have two visual variants:

  1. A Gloop that has a large orange dot near its right eye and several black branches protruding from the top of its stump. Its eyes are set in an angry expression.
  2. A Gloop that has more orange liquid spilling from the top of its stump. It has less orange details and shorter branches. Its eyes give off an indifferent expression.

Overview

The Roasted Gloop combines the usual part-Dark physical attacks of its kin with some Fire skills that can inflict Dry on their targets. Its signature attack fires a large beam of pure heat from the top of its stump, which hits all players for light magical Fire damage and a high chance of Dry. It can also take a defensive stance to buff its Accuracy and Burn itself; since it absorbs Fire, this essentially acts as a pseudo-Regen.

On higher difficulty levels, the Roasted Gloop's defensive stance also buffs its Evade, the Dry chance on its Heat Ray increases, and its physical attacks all gain a small chance to make the target Heavy. While the Gloop itself can't exploit the latter status, be careful if its allies have strong Earth attacks.

The easiest way to defeat a Roasted Gloop is to equip a weapon that intimidates Tree-based foes (e.g. the Oak Staff or The Chopper); on its turn, the Gloop will immediately Surrender and retreat. In a more conventional fight, it still isn't much of a threat on its own; Fire, Dry, and Heavy resistance will render it nearly impotent.

The Roasted Gloop absorbs Fire and Dark, but has no other resistances. Its primary weakness is Earth, but Holy and Water are also very effective against it; the latter synergizes with its extreme vulnerability to Wet, potentially allowing combos with subsequent Thunder and Ice skills. Its Evade is a little lower than normal, making it easier to hit.

If "More Foe Resistance" is active, the Roasted Gloop absorbs Bomb (although not to the same degree as Fire and Dark), becomes immune to Ice and neutral to Water, and its Earth weakness is drastically reduced. It also becomes somewhat resistant to defensive debuffs.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Defend (2/3), Heat Ray (1/3);
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Arm Flail (1/2), Stab (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Hit* (1/5), Heat Ray (1/5), Magma (1/5);
    • If it used Defend last turn → Stab (2/5);
    • Otherwise → Stab (1/5), Defend (1/5).

*Hit becomes Arm Flail when <49% HP.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25%;
    • If Syphoned → Hit;
    • Otherwise → Magma.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Trees, the Roasted Gloop will immediately Surrender and Flee on their turn.

Summon

The Roasted Gloop can be captured and used as a summon; it can also be called between turns by the Obsidian Armor. It gives the entire party three stacks of Brave, making them immune to critical hits and offensive debuffs while increasing their own critical chance.
