Grolar Bear

The Grolar Bear is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is typically found in the Frozen Valley.

Appearance

The Grolar Bear is a white bear with blue eyes, off-white claws and small black spots on its legs. Its most distinctive features are the ice crystals emerging from its fur; several form a "crest" on its back, and a few more emerge from the backs of its forelimbs.

Overview

Like all Bears, the Grolar Bear is a hard-hitting physical foe with a significant amount of HP. Initially, it uses non-elemental physical strikes and a slightly Ice-based body slam that has a decent Chill chance; this can be problematic if other Ice-themed foes are present (and they often are). If provoked or weakened, it will start using powerful Ice skills like Avalanche and Iceberg, as well as a rolling attack that hits the front line before going on to deal even greater damage to the backup players. The v2 update also gave it the ability to cast Tempest if its target has significant Ice resistance.

The Grolar Bear can go Berserk if it suffers a powerful blow, drastically increasing its damage output (even more so on higher difficulty levels, where it also gains a decent Attack buff) and allowing it to use its best attacks immediately. As usual, it can be calmed down by hitting it with a Water or Ice attack; the former is recommended due to its Ice absorption. Syphon prevents it from using Avalanche, Iceberg, or Tempest, even when enraged; in fact, a Syphoned Grolar Bear will do nothing whatsoever on the turn it goes Berserk, and only has a 50% chance to attack once brought to its "low HP/Berserk" pattern.

The Grolar Bear is weak to Fire, Bio, and (to a lesser extent) Dark, but absorbs Ice and greatly resists Wind and Water. In terms of ailments and debuffs, it is immune to Chill and Freeze while resisting Stun, Doom, Instant Death, and debuffs to its Attack and Defence; conversely, it is highly vulnerable to Stagger. Like all Bears, it focuses its attention on the last player to damage it, including via automatic skills or counterattacks.

If the "More Foe Resistance" challenge is enabled, the Grolar Bear loses its Bio weakness, becomes immune to Dark and Holy, and gains a resistance to Earth. It also becomes resistant to having its Magic Attack and Magic Defence debuffed.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the Bear is not Berserked → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Roll;
  • If Enrage was triggered this turn;
    • If Syphoned → Nothing;
    • Otherwise → Avalanche (1/2), Iceberg (1/2);
  • <65% HP or when Berserked → Body Slam (1/4), Roll (1/4);
    • If Syphoned → Nothing (2/4);
    • Otherwise → Avalanche (1/4), Iceberg (1/4);
  • Otherwise → Maul (1/3), Bite (1/3), Body Slam (1/3).

* Avalanche and Iceberg have a chance to be replaced by Tempest depending on target Ice resistance (the higher the target's Ice resistance, the higher the chance of using Tempest). If the target has >30% resistance to Ice (not taking into account boosting/dampening statuses), Tempest will always be used instead of Avalanche and Iceberg.

The Bear will target the last player who attacked them with their attacks.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Maul (1/2), Body Slam (1/2).

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the Grolar Bear will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

The Grolar Bear can be captured and used as a summon. It casts Avalanche on all foes, hitting them three times for physical Ice damage and a small chance of a two-turn Freeze. Compared to the Avalanche used by enemy Grolar Bears, the summon has above-average Accuracy, a normal Randomness Factor, and no ability to inflict Weaken.

Trivia

  • While nothing like the EBF5 foe, Grolar Bears actually exist in real life; they are hybrids between a Polar Bear and a Grizzly Bear that occasionally occur naturally or in captivity.
    • It is unclear if the EBF5 Grolar Bear has the mixed parentage of the real-world equivalent.
  • The Grolar Bear is the only one of the EBF5 Bears unable to use Dump. Whether it's intentional due to it's elemental type or a programming oversight is debatable.
