―Anna applying familiar techniques to a similar, but unknown foe

The Black Bear is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. In the base game, it is found in the Battle Arena.

Appearance

The Black Bear is, as the name suggests, a black-furred bear with yellow-orange eyes. It has a number of black rock shards embedded in its back, surrounded by small droplets of lava. More speckles of lava can be seen on its legs, and each of its feet have two claws made of orange crystal (possibly Ruby).

Overview

The Black Bear uses powerful physical attacks, most being at least partially Fire-based. Some of its skills can inflict Dry, Burn, and Defence debuffs, all of which can make the Black Bear's assault even harder to weather. It also has a few Earth and non-elemental attacks, one of which can inflict mild Virus on higher difficulty levels; however, this move can be disabled by turning off the "Mature" filter. It becomes more likely to use Quake instead of its Fire moves if the target has high resistance to the former.

Like all EBF5 Bears, the Black Bear targets the last player to damage it and goes Berserk if it takes too much damage in a single blow; on higher difficulties, it also gives itself an Attack buff in the process. Unlike other Bears, it is actively vulnerable to Ice and Water, which can be a mixed blessing; while players equipped to calm it down will be able to significantly damage it in the process, this increases the risk of hitting the damage threshold to make it go Berserk again. On the other hand, its neutrality to Wet and severe susceptibility to Stagger makes it easy to set up a damage combo and wipe it out entirely.

The Black Bear absorbs Fire and greatly resists Bomb and Wind; on the other hand, it's weak to Ice, Water, and (to a lesser degree) Earth. As a high-tier foe, it is strongly resistant to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Doom, and Instant Death; it also has a modest resistance to Attack and Defence debuffs. However, it is extremely vulnerable to Stagger.

If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, the Black Bear becomes immune to Doom and Instant Death, absorbs Dark, and becomes highly resistant to Earth and Thunder. Additionally, it gains a resistance to Magic Attack and Magic Defence debuffs.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the Bear is not Berserked → Nothing*;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Roll;
  • <65% HP or when Berserked → Maul (1/5), Body Slam (1/5), Roll (1/5);
    • If Syphoned → Nothing (2/5);
    • If selected target resists Fire → Quake (2/5);
    • Otherwise → Fire Crystals (1/5), Magma (1/5);
  • Otherwise → Bite (1/3), Body Slam (1/3);
    • If Mature is turned off;
      • If selected target resist Fire → Quake (1/3);
      • Otherwise → Fire Crystals (1/6), Magma (1/6);
    • Otherwise → Dump (1/3).

* "Nothing" also gives 1x Berserk to the bear.

Additionally, Maul has a chance to be replaced by Dump (or Quake, if Mature is turned off) depending on target Fire resistance (the higher the target's Fire resistance, the higher the chance to use Dump/Quake). If the target has >30% Fire resistance (not taking into account boosting/dampening statuses), Dump/Quake will always be used instead of Maul.

The Bear will target the last player who attacked them with their attacks.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Maul (1/2), Body Slam (1/2).

If any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the Black Bear will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon

The Black Bear can be captured and used as a summon. It uses a powered-up Maul on a single target, dealing decent physical Fire damage and inflicting a full nine stacks of Dry. Although the Red Pixel is a much cheaper option for inflicting Dry on a foe, the Black Bear can inflict even more stacks at once with twice the success rate on top of dealing decent damage to Fire-weak foes.

Trivia

  • The Black Bear is the only member of the EBF5 Bears who can use Dump more than once per battle.
