"Yeah, I'm like a rock star now! Like Iron Lady, Gigadeth, or Rise Against the Machine!"
―Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Crimson Razorback, known simply as Razorback before EBF5, is a recurring "sword" in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It is usually a part of Matt's arsenal, but it can also be wielded by Canti in Epic Battle Fantasy.

Description

The Razorback is a red, V-shaped guitar modelled after the real-world Dean Razorback guitar. As a weapon, it is held by the upper part of its neck, allowing its jagged body to serve as an axe-like bludgeon.

For Epic Battle Fantasy 5, the Razorback was renamed the "Crimson Razorback" and had a graphical refinement; notably, its head became pure red and its body was reversed (with the larger upper point facing towards Matt when wielded instead of away from him).

In all of its appearances, the Crimson Razorback gives the highest level of Magic Attack available to any Sword, making it one of the few viable options for the highly unorthodox magic-oriented Matt. It also tends to be strongly associated with Power Metal, increasing its power (either directly or via an elemental boost) and/or casting it as a bonus skill.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

The Razorback gives Matt a great Magic Attack boost and a fair Attack boost, but at the cost of slightly reducing his Evade. It increases the damage and healing effects of Power Metal, and allows Unleash to debuff the target's Magic Attack.

Before the EBF Collection update, the Razorback was actually Holy-elemental instead of Wind-elemental

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Razorback has pitiful Attack, great MP, and unmatched Magic Attack which it can buff even further with its Unleash. It also adds a slight Wind element to Matt's weapon-elemental skills, although the low elemental degree reduces its effectiveness even on Wind-weak foes.

While superb for magic-based offense, the Razorback has the misfortune of being wielded by the least magic-inclined member of the party; Matt can learn exactly three damaging spells in EBF3, all of which lean more support than offense. It does turn Power Metal into a decent option for Wind damage and ally healing, but Lance will typically make better use of the shared skill with his higher base Magic Attack and offensively-inclined guns.

The Razorback has a weakness to Thunder, which remains constant at all levels.

Normal

The Crimson Razorback has incredible Magic Attack and decent Magic Defence, but its pathetic Attack renders most of Matt's usual skills ineffective. Fortunately, it occasionally casts Power Metal between turns and unleashes Gust with Weapon-elemental skills; both benefit from its Wind boost, and the latter allows Matt to make use of its Magic Attack even when afflicted with Syphon or while Power Metal is on cooldown. It can also inflict Light and debuff Magic Attack, further boosting its elemental damage while leaving magic-focused foes weaker.

While an offensive magic Matt build is far from impossible, the Crimson Razorback is best used as a healing/support weapon. Its stats give Matt a fairly strong Heal More while adding a little punch to skills like Electron Gun and Screamer, allowing him to support his teammates and disrupt his foes in between blasts of Power Metal.

The Crimson Razorback resists Thunder, Wind, Syphon and Disable. It becomes immune to the latter two at Level 5.

Equip Remix

In a departure from its previous appearances, the Alt Crimson Razorback is equally competent with physical and magical attacks; however, its strong and balanced offenses come at the cost of minor Evade and Accuracy penalties. Its stealing bonus is insignificant in a fight (but great for farming), while its Wind boost and Normal Attack counter are useful but not outstanding (especially since Matt needs shared skills to take advantage of the former and the sword has no inherent on-hit effects). It also has a small chance of casting Phyrnna's Blessing between turns; while rare, the free Regen and Magic Attack buff are always welcome, especially for a magic-focused party.

Aside from its auto-skill and stealing abilities, the Alt Crimson Razorback is most notable for being in a three-way tie for the highest Magic Attack among Alt swords; unfortunately, this is minimally useful for the physically inclined Matt. The Alt Emerald Smasher has identical offenses, on-hit Dispel, and a much more synergistic elemental boost, but its Evade/Accuracy penalties are slightly higher and it's available much later outside of a "Randomized Equip Locations" Custom Game. On the other hand, the Alt Crimson Razorback is fairly useful for the battle against Anna in No Man's Land, especially if upgraded to Level 3; it gives Matt's weapon-elemental skills a little more punch against Anna while resisting two of her offensive elements.

The Alt Crimson Razorback is resistant to Fire, Thunder and Wind. It doesn't become immune to any of them at Level 5.

The Crimson Razorback is found in a chest in the left wing of the Grand Gallery. Unlike most of the chests in the area, the Crimson Razorback's chest is completely unguarded by foes or Gold Blocks, making it easily accessible once the player has the 10 Medals necessary to enter the Grand Gallery in the first place.

Trivia

  • In EBF2 and 3, the marking on the Razorback's headstock is actually Matt Roszak's signature, as seen on some uploads on his DeviantArt.
  • While the Crimson Razorback didn't make an appearance in EBF4, the G*bson EB0 is very similar in appearance and function.
  • When Matt first wields the Crimson Razorback in EBF5, his battle quote references several popular rock and metal bands: Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Rise Against, and Rage Against the Machine.
