Obsidian Idol
The Obsidian Idol is a foe that appears in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and Adventure Story. It is found primarily in burnt locations like Ashwood Forest or the Lava Cave.
Appearance
The Obsidian Idol is a small, vaguely humanoid figure carved out of obsidian with orange-glowing eyes and dark orange lava visible in cracks around its body. Its visual variants include:
- A square-bodied Idol with projections resembling legs, stubby arms (one raised, one lowered), and a single, slightly jagged horn. It has lava-filled cracks running from the upper-right side of its body down to its left foot; part of the crack forms a jagged, frowning mouth under its beady eyes.
- A rectangular Idol with a largely symmetrical appearance, including square feet, defined (if still short) arms with three pointed "fingers" on each side, and a pair of pointed horns or "ears" on top. It has large oval eyes and a small, round mouth; they're connected by some cracks, with many more along its top.
- An irregularly shaped Idol with an asymmetrical face; its left eye is "<"-shaped, and its right eye is "X"-shaped and slightly higher on its head. Its arms are short and sloped downwards, and the top of its head has a large, curved protrusion resembling a blunt horn or a short Bowie knife. Its mouth is a curved frown full of lava, and most of its cracks are around the upper-left side of its body.
Overview
Epic Battle Fantasy 4
The Obsidian Idol has basic physical attacks with partial Earth and Fire damage, but it can also cast magic by jumping into a player's face and releasing a "flash" from its body. The flash can be red or black; the former is slightly stronger, Fire-based, and has a high Burn chance, while the latter is Dark-based and guaranteed to apply a decent Accuracy debuff to the recipient.
Overall, the Obsidian Idol is very weak, but its Black Flash can be mildly annoying. Syphon will render it nearly useless by locking it into its basic Jump attack; Berserk works as well, but it'll hit a little harder. It can generally be picked off at the party's leisure or left for last once more dangerous foes are dealt with; later in the game, multi-target skills like Bubble Blast or Ice Storm will pick it off while the party focuses on other threats.
The Obsidian Idol absorbs Fire while being immune to Dark and resistant to Earth, but it has a number of exploitable weaknesses to work with. Water is the absolute best option, but Holy and Ice are very effective in addition to being more readily available among the party's skills; Wind isn't as damaging, but still works better than usual. In terms of status effects, it's immune to Freeze and Poison and resistant to Wet, but it's seriously vulnerable to Weaken and Tired; neither is particularly important, but the latter is an option to mitigate the effects of its Accuracy-debuffing skill. It also has a massive Burn weakness, but this works with its Fire absorption to give it a slight regenerative effect.
Enabling "More Foe Resistance" makes the Obsidian Idol resistant to Stun and Tired, immune to Bio, and neutral to Holy.
Adventure Story
In Adventure Story, Obsidian Idols appear in the Volcano area, which makes up the final five levels of the game. Much like the Sand Idols and Ice Idols seen in earlier levels, Obsidian Idols attack by erratically bouncing towards Matt, trying to ram into him. When an Obsidian Idol's HP is depleted, it doesn't die right away; instead, it splits into two smaller pieces that behave identically to the original Idol but has lower HP.
