The Obsidian Boulder is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is primarily found in Redpine Town and The Rapture, although it can be encountered much earlier in the eastern side of the Freezeflame Dungeon.

Appearance

The Obsidian Boulder is a stout creature of living rock, with chunks of stone forming simple limbs and a face on the front of its body. As the name implies, it is made of obsidian stone with glowing orange cracks on its sides and arms. It has orange gems (presumably Ruby) forming its eyes and mouth and a larger orange crystal embedded in the top of its head.

For some of its attacks, the Obsidian Boulder uses a big orange crystal modeled after a 20-sided die. According to the bestiary, this stems from its love of playing Dungeons and Dragons (a popular tabletop RPG), but the veracity of this claim remains uncertain.

Overview

The Obsidian Boulder's main damage output comes from its "D20" attacks, which have an above-average critical chance and a staggering 180% Randomness Factor - for comparison, that's eighteen times higher than the average attack and 30% higher than Natalie's Lucky Star. This gives its boulder attacks a chance to wipe out their target's HP even if they're fully healed and buffed. On the other hand, these attacks could cause laughably pitiful damage instead; they're also purely Fire-based, so increasing Fire resistance removes the need to worry about the random damage output. In this case, it may also be helpful to inflict Berserk on the Obsidian Boulder, which forces it to use its boulder attacks exclusively; conversely, Syphon will prevent the foe from using its boulder at all, limiting it to headbutts and arm swings.

Aside from the unique randomness, the Obsidian Boulder has the ability to apply a few status effects; fortunately, these are fairly minor ones with a low infliction chance. While the odds of applying status goes up on harder difficulties, there is nothing more dangerous than Dry or Stagger, potentially strengthening the foes but unlikely to do anything deadly on its own. The potential Defence debuff from the Fire Crystals is more concerning, as the more powerful foes in the area have heavy physical attacks.

Defensively speaking, the Obsidian Boulder has a small selection of resistances and a couple weaknesses. It absorbs Fire, and resists not only Earth and Bio but also Dark. On the flip side, it is weak to Holy, Bomb and especially Water. In terms of statuses, it is completely immune to Poison and Virus, as well as resisting Stun, Death and Doom. With "More Foe Resistance", it loses its Water weakness, resists Thunder, and absorbs both Bomb and Dark; it also becomes somewhat resistant to Defence and Magic Defence debuffs.

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → D20 Roll (1/3), Explosive D20 (1/3), D20 Bounce (1/3);
  • If Syphoned → Arm Swinging (1/2), Bump (1/2);
  • If Berserked → D20 Roll (1/3), Explosive D20 (1/3), D20 Bounce (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Arm Swinging (1/6), Bump (1/6), Fire Crystals (1/6), D20 Roll (1/6), Explosive D20 (1/6),
    D20 Bounce (1/6).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% and not Syphoned → Fire Crystals.

Summon

The Obsidian Boulder can be captured and used as a summon. It attacks all foes with its D20 for magical Fire damage and a good chance of a slight Burn. This attack has above-average critical chance and a massive Randomness Factor that can greatly amplify its damage or render it nearly useless, even against Fire-weak foes. Overall, it can be ignored in favor of more reliable summons.
