King's Guard

The King's Guard is a Holy-elemental cat toy available for NoLegs in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description

The King's Guard is a small red tower shield with a golden border and lines that divide its surface into four quadrants. Each quadrant bears a small golden symbol: a sword, a heart, a key, and an object that could be a small leaf or stone. Its associated weapon is a small golden fauchard with a brown wooden shaft. The head of the fauchard has a slightly curved blade and a large ring with red tassels tied to it; the tassels have two horizontal yellow stripes on their ends. The other end of the fauchard's shaft has a small, dull golden pommel.

Normal

The King's Guard is a strong, balanced weapon with good Attack, great Magic Attack, and moderate boosts to Defence and Magic Defence; on the other hand, it has a small Evade penalty. It empowers Holy skills and can provide the Brave status, both randomly and when using the Defend tactic. Its weapon-elemental skills can inflict an Accuracy debuff, but it does not have a guaranteed chance of being inflicted even at Level 5 and the debuff isn't especially strong.

The King's Guard is most notable for its ability to make NoLegs Brave, but it's also much better for a straight Holy offensive than the Godly Book; in turn, it's outclassed by the raw power of the Honjo Masamune. Defensively, it makes NoLegs a little bulkier and immune to an element, but this only mitigates the penalty to his great base Evade; the Devil's Sunrise is similar in this regard while having better Attack in exchange for weakening Magic Attack and entirely different resistances.

The King's Guard grants resistances to Dark, Bad Luck, Curse, Doom and Death, with all of them becoming an immunity at max level.

Equip Remix

The Alt King's Guard has sizable boosts to both Attack and Magic Attack, along with more moderate boosts to Defence and Magic Defence, but this comes at the price of a significant Accuracy loss. It can boost both Holy and non-elemental skills, and can counter with a Normal Attack, but it's most notable for the good Stun chance on its weapon-elemental skills. The Stun only lasts for one turn (making it useless if applied by a counter), but it can still let NoLegs paralyze foes en masse with the help of Swift Slash and status-boosting equipment.

Compared to the Alt Elven Shield, the Alt King's Guard is NoLegs's heavy-duty Holy weapon. It's fairly effective for an offensive status build; the Alt Viking Fur and the Alt Dragon Helm should be used to improve its Stun chance, as the Alt Gas Mask and the Alt Flame Suit will compound its Accuracy issues. Outside of that niche, its Holy damage output is its main advantage over stronger offensive cat toys like the Alt Neon Lightbulb and the Alt Viking Buckler. In particular, the Alt Devil's Sunrise has superior Attack, defenses, and Accuracy in exchange for no Magic Attack or counter skill and a tendency to Shroud NoLegs and his targets. Late in the game, the Alt Star Hammer completely outclasses the Alt King's Guard; it has the same on-hit Stun and counter skill coupled with better stats for NoLegs and a powerful (if hideously unreliable) auto-summon.

The Alt King's Guard resists Thunder, Bad Luck, Curse, and Dark. Only the Bad Luck and Curse resistances become an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The King's Guard is found inside a chest in the Deathly Hollows. The chest is behind a giant skull, which is raised by activating the right combination of levers on the same screen.

Trivia

• The color scheme of the King's Guard resembles the EBF5 iteration of the Sol Spear, especially given the tassels on the fauchard. However, it is unclear how a single culture would make both a small set of weapons for a cat and a full-sized spear/staff.
• The King's Guard can be considered the Holy counterpart to the Devil's Sunrise cat toy; they have similar appearances, identical defensive stat spreads, and diametrically opposite resistances, including an elemental immunity.
• The key on this cat toy's shield resembles the Old Key from Epic Battle Fantasy 3.
