Death Mask
The Death Mask is a male hat available in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. It has no armor counterpart.
Description
The Death Mask is a mask that appears to have been carved into the shape of a skull. There are two large holes for the wearer's eyes and a row of teeth on the bottom edge; four small teeth flanked by two long fangs. The top of the mask features a mass of red feathers, and its sides bear polished bone spikes with thin red-brown stripes.
In EBF4, the Death Mask appears to be made of grey stone, with two pinprick nose holes. In EBF5, it appears to be carved from brown wood, with brighter red feathers, a small triangular marking for a nose and tiny red pupils visible in its eye holes. As with the Human Skull and the Necromancer's Helmet, the pupils move during the wearer's idle animation; in this case, slowly glancing from left to right and back again.
No matter the game, the Death Mask offers tremendous offensive power; however, this comes at the price of a severe Accuracy penalty that should be compensated for by the wearer's skills and other equipment.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4
The Death Mask has weak defenses and a significant loss of Accuracy, but gives the single highest Attack boost of any male hat in the game. It will also buff the user's Attack if he loses more than 50% of his maximum HP in a single blow, helping him maintain high offensive power - if he has a counter skill, note that the buff will happen before he attacks. Because of this, the Death Mask is a highly potent addition for any physical Matt build; the Target Badge is an easy way to counteract its Accuracy issues without compromising the rest of his gear.
The Death Mask provides resistance to Dark, Death, and Doom, with the latter two becoming an immunity at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 5
Normal
The Death Mask has unparalleled Attack among male headgear, rivaling some of the weaker weapons available. Unfortunately, it has absolutely no defenses or resistances, as well as massive Accuracy and Evade penalties. This may necessitate Accuracy-boosting armor or Flairs to let the wearer reliably land his strengthened physical blows. Of course, the Death Mask is strong enough to make up for a weaker piece of armor; it's also effective in the EBF1 Data Bunker simulations, where Accuracy and Evade are irrelevant.
The Death Mask reduces the wearer's resistance to Fire, Burn and Scorch. These do not change at any forging level.
Equip Remix
The Alt Death Mask suffers from hefty Accuracy and Evade penalties, as well as having weaknesses to one element and two status effects. However, it also gives an immense boost to Magic Attack, being almost half again as high as the boost granted by the Alt Necromancer's Helmet. This makes it a powerful choice for a magically-offensive Lance build, although it may necessitate support from his other gear or the rest of the party to counteract its drawbacks; it has good synergy with the Alt Flame Titan, which has similar drawbacks in exchange for massive magical power.
The Alt Death Mask makes the wearer more vulnerable to Fire, Tired and Weaken, with the weaknesses remaining constant at all levels.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4
The Death Mask is found on Battle Mountain, in a hidden chest on the Rainbow Rafflesia screen. The chest is revealed by pushing the blocks onto X-marked tiles for it; to reach it, the player must beat Rainbow Rafflesia and take a path on the following screen. The Stepladder is required to get this far.
